1. A six-month non-compete is more than enough time for WKYC to move Ellen and Phil McGraw up one hour each... and finally launch a 5pm newscast with Denise and Jim Donovan.

WJW already has a lot of news anchors in their stable. And given Tribune's recent insistence on contract buyouts...

What about WEWS? I can still picture her on at Noon and 4pm or 5pm.

  2. If Raycom were to sell/trade WOIO/WUAB, who would want it? Only taker I could see is Nexstar but only if Nexstar is willing to give up WKRN and WKRG/WFNA to Raycom in exchange.

What about Cox Media? Or could Sinclair expand into a market they have yet to enter? What about the Spectrum Auction too?

  3. WOIO just can't catch a break. Now they had to respond to apparent numerous requests to drop this afternoon's Browns loss to the Bills in favor of the Steelers-Bengals matchup.

Couldn't WUAB be used as a secondary channel for the games that conflict with the Browns? I do have to wonder if the ratings for the Browns games are a lot lower than last year's or the year the before.

  4. Which then devolved into the ultra-generic "19 News."

That was right before "Action News" came to the scene on April or May of 2002. Cynthia Tinsley left shortly before the switch took place. She did not want to anchor weekends, and without Jack Marshall, with whom she anchored with on WUAB.

Ironically, WOIO used the generic "19 News" branding back in 1995 when the station first went on the air with its newscast. It only lasted a year in which they switched to "CBS 19 News," which I think they should switch back to.

  5. Unless the plan is for WKYC to launch a 5pm newscast (which they should, and it shocks me that they haven't), where would Denise go?

Robin, outside of the April Fool's Day stunt at WKYC and her "Throwback Thursday" guest appearance at WJW last May (alongside Tim Taylor, Dick Goddard and Tony Rizzo), has mainly been absent from the local airwaves. I was somewhat surprised that she didn't make an on-air cameo during Dick Goddard's "final forecast" last month, given that the two have been friends for decades... (so much so that, when she initially left WJW in 1991 for a New York NBC daytime strip that went nowhere, Dick offered to take a pay cut for her to stay!)

Jim Donovan has been anchoring the weeknight 7pm newscast on WKYC solo since Robin left. Perhaps Denise can be his co-anchor or she can become the solo anchor (with Jim strickly on sports). There's also Live on Lakeside at Noon. She could be co-host or a sole host for the show, anchoring the news and conducting interviews.

WEWS still has that opening for Good Morning Cleveland after Jackie Fernandez was fired. Maybe Denise could fill that slot (perhaps with a different co-anchor), or have Corrina Pysa get that gig permanently on GMC, and Denise could join Leon Bibb on the Noon news and maybe she could also take over The Now, freeing up Rob Powers and/or Danita Harris to do just 6pm and 11pm. Denise could even fill-in on GMC, the 5pm news or 6pm news.

WJW is full with anchors as it is, unless they would want to launch an 11pm newscast.

  6. Denise Dufala announced on her Facebook page she is leaving WOIO after 22 years with the station to spend more time with her family. She just celebrated 30 years in the Cleveland TV market. Her first eight years were at WJW before she moved to 19.

  7. Also speaking of Cleveland's CBS 19 https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1156665624382555

Jason is going to do the weather for the 5pm, 6pm, and 11pm news on WOIO and the 10pm news on WUAB.

Jeff Tanchak will remain on the 4pm news on 19 and 9pm news on 43. Basically, Jeff and Jason will tag team on weeknights.

Everyone else stays put - Samantha Roberts on mornings and at Noon, Beth McLeod on weekends, and Jon Loufman on fill-ins.

  8. Pretty much. WKYC found success in the late 90s with Ramona Robinson at 6/11 and the early evening talk duo of Ellen at 4pm and Dr. Phil at 5pm. Aside from their turnover between 2008-2012, they have shown remarkable stability.

WEWS took forever to find a successor to Ted Henry, lost ratings powerhouses Oprah, WoF and J! in the span of a few months, and has been blowing up the roster of their morning show ever 15-18 months. (Note that one-time morning anchors Macie McInnis Jepson and Josh Boose are now newscasters/reporters for WTAM/1100 and iHeartMedia's 24/7 Total Traffic/News.)

So in short, WKYC finally took advantage of WEWS's weaknesses and slowly ascended to #2 in the market, behind WJW.

Jepson's first co-anchor, Mike Dunston, is now anchoring weekend evenings at WGCL in Atlanta. One of his co-workers is Sharon Reed, who also used to anchor in Cleveland, but at WOIO/WUAB.

Speaking of 19/43, another WEWS alum, Jason Nicholas, is slated to start work as Chief Meteorologist soon, so don't be surprised if helps to steal viewers from 5.

5 has seen a lot of talent turnover since their first big makeover back in 1998. I'm not sure yet another one would be wise. There is some hope where a promo mentions that "News 5 at 6" and "ABC World News Tonight" is gaining viewers.

Back to 19/43, someone mentioned on another message board that Raycom posted an opening for a new Traffic Anchor/Reporter. I wonder what that could mean.

  9. This is just a question, but does anyone think the new GM at WOIO/WUAB in Cleveland will make a lot of changes, especially with the news department, and especially with talent? I do wonder if he'll even keep the "Cleveland 19" and "CLE 43" brandings.

  10. Yeah, I meant expanding on their second place position. They'll effectively own 11.

Which is pretty remarkable considering that WKYC has no news at 4 and 5, and their noon timeslot has a heavily sponsored infotainment show instead of a traditional newscast.

If there comes a time when WKYC adds a 5pm newscast and/or WJW adding an 11pm newscast, WEWS or WOIO will have to find ways to keep up or see their ratings get worse.

WJW and WKYC both easily own Cleveland television news.

Jym Ganahl now in semi-retirement from WCMH in Columbus.

There have been a lot of departures from NBC 4 lately.

Speaking of WCMH, former anchor/investigative reporter Duane Pohlman has resurfaced at WKRC in Cincinnati for similar duties, only he's co-anchoring on weekends instead of weekdays.

Dick Goddard recovering from surgery he had after he fell. He should be back on WJW soon, but going back and forth on appearing at the Woollybear Festival this weekend.
