  1. I would love to see NDs fill in in the field so they definitely get a dose of reality.

I genuinely don't understand the angst regarding Nightly broadcasting from Studio 1A. Is it just sentimental longing for a dedicated space?

From a business perspective, it doesn't make a lot of sense to build a standalone studio for a show with a 22-minute runtime where the studio itself is on camera for a few minutes. The economic realities make Nightly's use of 1A completely reasonable. Heck, Nightly started switching the show from the 1A control back room during Brian Williams' tenure. I don't see the practical need for a big production space for a solo-anchored newscast like this. ABC World News Tonight uses a shared studio space, but outside of a bump shot, the show is mostly a static shot of David seated in front of an LED wall. And this is the top-rated evening newscast, and on occasion, has been the most watched show on television.

So while the set in Studio 1A might be a little long in the tooth, it seems perfectly serviceable. Lester's ratings didn't drop when they moved to 1A. And I doubt Tom's would spike if they had their own space. When budgets are being slashed, the priority should be to keep investing in newsgathering resources. Building a new set to say you have a dedicated space doesn't seem like a good use of shrinking resources. But I might be missing something here.

IMO it's no issue that they share a set, the problem is that the set sucks.

  3. Recently a WRGB/WCWN anchor went viral for anchoring their three hour long AM broadcast while in labor.

Interestinly their news director Stone Grissom has been filling in for her for the last two mornings.

The station is on the verge of short staffing as three of their anchors are pregnant simultaneously, with one already on maternity leave and another on paternity leave...on top of Liz Bishop's pending retirement.

Just like when Brian Williams took over from Tom Brokaw, they waited a bit to switch up the graphics to ease in the change for the viewers.  The networks did the same when transitioning from Charles Gibson to Diane Sawyer to David Muir.  Same went for the morning shows Bryant/Katie to Katie/Matt etc.

The set Brian Williams got about two to three years in sucked compared to the late era Brokaw set. IMO that was Nightly News's best era visually (2000-2007).

Yeah Studio 1A looked way better when they changed up the set for Meredith.

A true end of an era is coming...

The Queen of the Capital Region, WRGB's Liz Bishop, has announced her retirement.

May 30th will be her last day and will mark the end of a 52-year era in Capital Region television news. It's the only station she ever worked for in her career, a RARITY in today's business.

    https://cbs6albany.com/news/local/cbs6-news-anchor-liz-bishop-announces-retirement-after-more-than-5-decade-career

    You don't miss a beat!

I've seen numerous articles calling Deborah Norville the longest running female US anchor which isn't true given Liz Bishop's tenure. Perhaps they mean national anchor but that distinction isn't clearly being made.

  6. RARE -- Today Show (Nov 2001) covering the aftermath of the American 587 crash. Post 9/11 colored lower thirds were in use. The patriotic tinted peacock bug was still used.

NBC News American 587 crash coverage (2001). In similar fashion to 911, Matt and Katie are reporting on an American Airlines crash in New York City that occurred during the Today Show. One can only imagine how re-traumatizing that entire incident was, yet a lot of people my age had no idea this even happened.

The neighborhood reporters thing isn’t actually a bad concept. WXYZ is giving its plethora of reporters each a beat. And it’s sending them out to rustle the bushes for stories in their assigned area. All but a handful (5 or less) of their air talents are not from Detroit so the reporters they are hiring know the area. If you do it right it’s pretty workable. They haven’t reduced anchor time and the quality is much improved overall. So if done well it’s a win. Certainly an improvement over all the failed Scripps ideas.

It's a good concept. It can be a lot for reporters learn multiple communities. Having a specific subject or geographic focus allows reporters to gain more expertise in reporting.

The problem is MMJing. Do reporters want to one man band until retirement? With anchoress newscasts that also removes a potential escape from MMJing.

Now is breaking news anyone's game or does it go solely to the neighborhood reporter(s) that covers that area? IMO, it would suck for your beat to be a region where nothing exciting happens and isn't prone to breaking news.

Wow! Channel 7 has come a long way! The new Disney building has been an improvement for all shows that moved.

Loving the neon lights and brick wall, it reminds me of Tegna's set design trends.

Yeah, and it looks like based off of this, he'll be involved with network coverage of the funeral of Pope Francis late tonight/early tomorrow morning along with fellow anchor from sister West Coast flagship KABC (Los Angeles) David Ono, which makes some sense & even more worth ABC sending them out to help the main network out with coverage. https://deadline.com/2025/04/how-to-watch-pope-francis-funeral-online-1236375052/

NBC: Surprisingly no Savannah. Notably they have Craig Melvin leading coverage from studio 1A not the Vatican.

No Lester is understandable as it eases Tom Llamas into the main anchor role.... which makes me wonder why Llamas isn't leading coverage since he's at the Vatican.

Interesting that NBC was the only network to stop live coverage as the Pope's body  was brought into the basilica for burial. They went with Saturday Today from New York, with a funeral summary off the top. ABC and CBS broke about 20 minutes after.

CBS: It's nice to see Nora co-anchoring with her successor John Dickerson. Networks often act weird when they (apparently) usher someone out of a prominent role, but they allowed Nora to anchor several major events before she left, and she's still a presence on the network.

Noticing whenever one of the Evening News duo is chosen for major coverage, it's often Dickerson over Maurice.

$17/hr starting rate but asking for a Bachelors degree. You can get that at Dunkin Doughnuts.

I recall a news reporter group page on Instagram asking posters what the worst company they've worked was. To my surprise, Sinclair was the second most common response after Nexstar.

    Not hard to see why.

What does that future look like? Local tv stations with no network scripted programming?

Just syndicated scripted and talk shows, local news, and national news provided by the station ownership groups?

My guess is that Noon and 4pm went to WIVB but it's only a guess.

why aren't local stations transparent about ratings anymore? Is it to spin the numbers in their favor to convince advertisers to agree to a certain price?

  17. This is better lit than their Upper West Side studio, warmer lighting has really helped all of the shows that moved. The HD quality looks richer.

The temporary set looked better IMO, I wish they switched it up more for the new permanent Live set.

This is basically what ABC did with World News Tonight, re-create the same thing in a different space. The only set I would've liked to have seen rebuilt the same way was The View, as it looked really good before, but the new set is OK.

It’s hardly the point of this evening’s breaking news but WABC’s new location is proving to be a prime vantage point for this story. Mike Marza has been reporting from the outside deck with the crash site in the water behind him.

I was just thinking about that. It reminded me of when Tom Brokaw anchored Nightly News from the roof of 30 Rock on 9/11.

An alternative idea would've been to field anchor with one of the primary news cast anchors on the roof for the duration of the newscast.

Sam Champion confirmed the producers want to change up the GMA3 format and try different things.  He and Lara are subbing in intentionally.

If this becomes a long term pairing it would be Lara's second time in a similar role. Reminds me of when she hosted Good Afternoon America.

This is cool for Sam who (speculation) seems to have wanted a network position again after leaving GMA years ago.

They (DeMarco) still referred to the program as GMA3 in a teaser I saw this morning...

If the buzz is true about DeMarco and Eva getting the boot, that especially sucks for DeMarco who was overjoyed to the point of tears after getting the job.

He's had some pretty prominent anchor positions over his career so I'm sure he'll get another opportunity at ABC.

From what I can gather (from a quick google search) is that ratings haven’t been good for GMA3. In addition, ABC wants everything placed under the GMA banner (eliminating the staff of GMA3, etc…). This appears to be a part of bigger changes expected to happen over the coming months.

GMA Cubed  has gone though five rebrandings in it's seven year run. It's been an unstable program from the jump.  Im surprised ABC didn't outright give up and cancel it.

Strahan, Sarah and Keke was my favorite incarnation of the program, but it never took off.
