It’s pure speculation at this point but it’s not entirely far fetched - Norah all but demanded the position and was placed there by the new president who is now on her way out unexpectedly.

Depending on what happens Norah may have been better off if she remained on CBSTM as their ratings are decent.

They could split the difference between Holt and Muir and go with Maurice DuBois from WCBS. But there’s no way Norah walks away willingly. Perhaps the return of the dual-anchor format ABC tried some years ago?

Maurice from NY and Norah from DC?

Margaret Brennen is also a possibility although perhaps Maurice and Norah is a better idea.

I think they'll pick someone younger. Jane's a great anchor, but ABC has done great with a younger anchor in David Muir. You never know though.

It’s possible and I think she would do well although you’re probably right about a younger anchor being picked. Who would be good?

  4. How about Jane Pauley as the anchor of the CBSEN? Everyone knows her. Since can do it for 5-10 years. If someone’s who 78 can be the leader of the free world someone who’s 70 can anchor the cbs evening news.

  5. I see Norah got an interview with someone who accused Governor Cuomo of sexual harassment tonight. I probably worked to Noah’s benefit that she’s a woman. That makes sense to me. I would think someone in that situation would feel more comfortable talking to a women as opposed to taking to a man.

    Speaking as a moderator...

The most recent racially inflammatory stations have been hidden, and will not be tolerated. It is no secret that diversity and representation has been a delicate subject in news broadcasting for decades, but it's entirely out of line to diminish someone's ethnic background because they don't look [blank] enough. Throwing out accusations of racism based mostly on speculation is also highly inappropriate for this forum.

End of discussion, and consider this a public warning.

Also I don’t think it’s fair to slander Elizabeth Vargas here without any proof to back up the claims made against her. She’s still a person after all. None of us would like if that happened with us.

That's okay.  I will point it out for you.

You claimed that Elizabeth Vargas got her job because of her race ("...[Simpson was] unfairly latinolized by the terrible Elizabeth Vargas")

And you then claimed Tom Llamas got his job because of his race ("...you know that 'hermano' connection...")

Has the thought crossed your mind that perhaps they got their jobs because they are both qualified and talented?

I will grant you the benefit of the doubt and assume it was unintentional, but it is otherwise suggestive of either casual or overt racism.

Also what information do you have that Varags was terrible to Simpson?

WFLD in Chicago has main team Sunday thru Thursday as more people watch on Sundays compared to Fridays.

I think WCBS briefly considered doing that in the late 90s.

Good Lord, what? Can we remain on the topic of WNT, or at least not on half a dozen topics?

Well how Ted would have been a good anchor for WNT is on topic. The rest we can agree can be discussed elsewhere. Anyhow I expect David and George to both remain where they are for a very long time. That’s most likely why Tom left ABC. He likely knew that he would not be taking over for either of them anytime soon.

I had a feeling if George were to have left the network over this dispute, which would be a big loss for ABC, I said he go to CBS be the now that I think of it anchor of politics. If Nora has that role intact, he have a critical role in politics. Though he could co-anchor Face The Nation. But the CBS Zirinsky is a feminist so maybe not, 60 minutes would be like a demotion.

Yeah but she ascended to the World News Tonight chair too fast.

Agreed! Plus, special events like the Inauguration or the Election, they can co-anchor.

Tom is okay but I doubt he'll give CBS the rise it needs. Heck the only person I see at CBS with has the "presence" to be lead anchor is Ted Koppel, lol. If only he were younger and up to it! If he didn't retire in '05 he would have been a solid replacement on WNT instead of Vargas and Woodruff.

Speaking of Elizabeth Vargas, I always thought she had a good personality for mornings. I saw her co-anchor on a 90s Thanksgiving Edition of "Today' and she was pretty solid.

Generally neither two males or two females co-anchor special coverage for the networks. Tom most likely won’t. Ted Koppel, Leslie Stahl or Jane Pauley. Ted could always do it for two years. He’s only 2 years older than Joe Biden. I think he announced he was leaving ABC after a falling out days before the late Peter Jennings announced that he had lung cancer. Talk about terrible timing. If no such announcement had taken place after Peter announced that he had lung cancer perhaps he could have taken over for him. He would have had the opportunity to anchor WNT and he would have been good for the ratings. It would have been a win-win. Bob and Elizabeth were not ready to anchor WNT at the time and then Charlie and Diane could have both remained at GMA. At 65 he could have anchored for 10-11 years and then a suitable replacement could have taken over. I agree. Elizabeth should have replaced Joan Lunden on GMA in 1997. I think she would have done well. Apparently she was considered to co-host the Early Show on CBS in 1999. I also thought she and not Ann should have replaced Meredith on the Today Show in 2011. I thought she was good was mornings and Ann was better for evenings. That’s another example of bad timing. Ann announced she was leaving NBC weeks before the scandal with Brian happened. Had that not been the case she could have taken over for him. In fact NBC probably should have given her and not Brian the weekend job way back in 1993. That would have been better for NBC in the long term although hindsight is 20/20.

I think George was either offered CBSEN or he never was really leaving ABC at all. Yes she did. She would have been better off if Charlie or Diane took over for Peter right away and then she may have had the job once they retired.

Speaking of CBS- Could have been the "rival network" that was spoke of... If George thought all along he should have had WNT and not Muir, and saw an opportunity at getting the chair at CBSEN to try to start and win a rivalry?

That would have made sense. I don’t see George leaving ABC for Cable and I don’t see NBC offering him a main slot on Today or Nightly News. MAYBE Meet the Press although I think it’s more likely he was offered the CBSEN. It would be tempting to go as he wanted to take over for Diane on WNT in 2014 and have a chance to anchor an evening newscast something he’s wanted to do at least since 2009 when Charles Gibson stepped down from anchoring WNT. Apparently he also wanted George to take over for him over Diane. I’ll have to find the source for that when I get a chance. As for Tom my guess is that he’s heading to NBC although it would be interesting if he shocked all

of us and went to CBS instead.

Crazy! I was just tinking about Matt Gutman's previous suspension when I saw him reporting on the Tiger Woods crash.

Lester is pretty solid as anchor of Nightly News, David Muir is pretty good too (ABC News however....). The only Evening News anchor I see could being unseated in the near future is Nora O'Donnell, not that CBS has anyone better at the moment.

I don’t think this would happen but it would be something if TL was headed to CBS and not NBC and he ends up anchoring the CBS Evening News.

In terms of career progression, one would not go from anchoring a broadcast at WABC to anchoring World News Now. It pays less and the hours are worse. If anything, you sometimes see the opposite - Liz Cho and Rob Nelson, for example, both anchored WNN before coming to WABC.

For most, anchoring a broadcast at WABC would be the apex of a career.

Unless Shirleen was leaving to anchor one of the main broadcasts on ABC there would be no point to her leaving. It would be worth it to leave for GMA, WNT or MAYBE for a spot on the VIew.

I mean I don’t see this being for a few years but I could see Michelle taking a weekday spot now that her kids are older. I feel that many viewers and many on here felt she wanted/deserved the morning spot (and she did deserve it) so who knows what the future may hold.

I believe that Michele did say in 2017 that she wanted the weekday spot. There might be too high of a demand for Shirleen to be replaced with a black women when she eventually moves on.

Yeah that was nice to see her on the program again. Yeah Shirleen is going to be huge. I honestly don't see her staying at WABC I can see her going bigger than that too. She's such a class act at what she does, kinda like how Sade is. :)

Where would Shirleen go? Liz and Sade I don’t see leaving anytime soon. Would she want to go to World News Now and America This Morning? Perhaps she will join GMA as a co-anchor someday?

Deborah and Bryant did not make a good pairing at all and NBC certainly did her no favors with the shitty transition of very clearly pushing Jane out in favor of a 10 years younger carbon copy.

They were not a good match. Perhaps if NBC gave Jane another 2 years maybe Deborah would have had a chance to do well in the long term. Supposedly Matt Lauer was approached about take over for Bryant Gumbel in early 1995 and he did not accept because Bryant wasn’t read to leave at the time. That likely help him along with him and Katie being a good team despite him being a terrible person.

Well deserved! CTM is the the best of the bunch currently. I like the mature sophisticated vibe of their round table conversations with guests. The moderate pacing is great, unlike the rushed feel of Today and GMA.

All the program needs is better graphics, an added elements to Studio 57 (instead of just sitting at the desk the whole broadcast, or occasionally standing by that giant screen) and they'll be solid.

CTM appears to be the morning news program with the most “news.”

Did CBSs morning show EVER come in first for a day let one for a week?

Really? He was just demoted from the C WH job, and given a weekend anchor shift as a consolation to save face. Jake is being groomed to replace wolf.

Is that a demotion? He’s now an anchor. Jake already is an established weekday anchor. I expect him, Jim and Anderson to be the main anchors for the 2024 election coverage.
