I've noticed for the last 5-6 weeks that Adam Kuperstein has been off on Fridays and Gilma Avalos has been filling in while Adam still co anchors with Gilma on Saturdays. I wonder what the long term plan is.

Adam said he’s going to be on Sat nights while there are new SNL episodes.

Today is not reluctant to remove personalities from their history as we’ve already seen on a number of occasions. I imagine Matt will not be involved at all in any Today history moving forward. I mean he and Meredith don’t even speak anymore following the allegations, I don’t see how they awkwardly put him in a room full of colleagues that have testified against him.

They also act like Ann Curry and Deborah Norville no longer exist. I doubt that Matt will be involved with any event pertaining to the Torah show. I guess Meredith doesn’t care for what he was accused of doing. I think it would be quite awkward and even wrong to expect people who testified against him to be in the same room as him for a celebration. Apparently it was also a dislike on the part of NBC and the Today Show that he was even able to get away with as much as he did. They probably want to forget about it.

    I agree.

I don’t expect him to be invited to the Today Shows 70th Anniversary Celebration in 2022 if we are back to “normal” by then.

I can actually see why as their heads are somewhat similar. I'm sure NBC doesn't want any references to Matt anymore.

Apparently they want to act like Matt no longer exists. I can’t blame them.

I'm assuming Phil is going to anchor weekend evenings. I wonder if it will be with Gilma or if they will move her to weekdays with Adam once Phil starts.

It would make more sense for Gilma to co-anchor with Adam on weekdays than with Phil on weekends. The 5pm newscast should have 2 anchors.

He delivered his marks before late sports last night in the delayed 11 pm edition.  He said he was looking forward returning to Chicago where he was  born and lived, and the return to sister station WMAQ.  He mentioned how exciting it was to first come to 30 Rock to work.  He also mentioned that he would be back in the building on occasion as his kids grandddude works in the building.  He also thanked Natalie in particular for the personal friendships and support as they have kids the same age - a toddler and infant and they will continue that over face time.   Much more satisfying to the viewers than his barely mentioning it at the end of the 4 pm news.

Given he was at the station for 4 years and not 40 plus years like Chuck I think that was an appropriate send off. The 4pm newscast was not the final newscast he did so it was not necessary for him to say much. Once Chuck either stops anchoring at WNBC or retires I expect them to give him the type of send off that WABC gave Diana Williams last year.

Because he wasn't there for 20-plus years. It's hard to do a grand farewell for someone that's not retiring or doesn't have tenure.

Exactly. He was not there for very long at all.

When Chuck eventually retires expect a major send off. Even for Janice and Bruce.

Actually Ali requested the move and has said "I love it". He teaches during the week in Philadelphia which is why he wanted to move to weekends, I was hoping they would let him anchor from the new Comcast Center in Philly but we probably won't ever see that.

    Interesting.

I don't think anyone was inferring Stefan Holt's move back to Chicago was budget driven.   He's been pretty open on social media that it was a return the family wanted.

The comment on budget cuts at several NBC O&Os and local NBCSNs was in relation to WNBC not replacing Stacey Bell at 5, no announcement of a co-anchor when Adam takes over, nor any announcement if there will be one on weekends with Gilma.  It probably comes down to if the viewers actually notice and care, not those that notice every detail of a broadcast.  There are enough remote reports and investigative stories at 5 that it may not make a big deal to most viewers.  Could that change?  That's up to the execs at NBC.

It’s odd although it could be permanent.

I kind of agree about having a solo at 6; the likes of Dana Tyler and Jim Gardner have been doing it for a fair bit now and it should fit Chuck just fine. Natalie and Adam should make for great rapport -- let's see if the honchos will commit to that pairing.

It’s Natalie and David. I think it would have been better to have them at 5 and 11, have Adam with a co-anchor at 11 and 4 and have Chuck go solo at 6 for now. That makes more sense than someone going solo at 5.

I suspect both Adam and Gilma will go solo with their respective broadcasts for a while.  NBC was in no hurry to replace Stacey Bell.  NBC budget cuts hurt other O&Os with both on air and off talent, which doesn't seem to have hit WNBC.  Probably not filling the 5 pm co-anchor slot has helped manage the budget.

Perhaps this is why Stephan is going to WMAQ. Perhaps it’s not a demotion per say but a part of a overall cost cutting move.

I’m sorry but an hour long newscast should not be anchored solo. I understand the pandemic perspective (and budget cuts) but in the long run I don’t see a solo an or at 5 working out.

If anything they should have someone solo at 6pm.

A market size does not determine a step up or step down. How much happier (or unhappier) you are with your professional life, personal life, living conditions, surrounding environment, your income vs cost of living and the opportunities available for your family determine whether a new job is a step up or step down.

Another possibility is that WMAQ is not thrilled with there current ratings and they think that Stefan would be an improvement and WNBC is confident they have someone else who would keep the ratings stable so they see it as a win-win.

Chicago is a step down it's Market #3.

Chicago, of course, isn't a dump!

His parents live in the NY area - which leads me to  believe a friend's speculation

that the move isn't his choice.

Perhaps Stephen and his wife wanted to move back to where they grew up. Perhaps they will be close to his wife’s parents or perhaps WNBC is looking to save money and that’s a factor in this. Stacey Bells recent departure makes me wonder if that might be the case.

WCBS had extensive coverage on Monday. See a story by Lisa Rozner that aired at 5:00, followed by genuine thoughts by Kristine Johnson and Dick Brennan (in for Maurice) here: https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2020/07/20/remembering-nina-kapur/

The same package aired at 6:00 that night, with comments from Dana Tyler thereafter. The video of Dana’s comments appears at the bottom of the story linked above.
