24994J 5577
I skimmed the article, but since it was written by NBC, where does this leave ESPN/ABC and FOX? AaronQ 282
Surprised that NBC made another major deal since they got the broadcasting rights for the Barclays Premier League (Soccer league over in England). Hopefully they'll bring back the NBA because ESPN'S coverage is a damn joke. TennTV1983 804
According to USA Today and a few others, both NBC and Fox will have sole rights to air NASCAR events(Fox gets the first half while NBC gets the other). ESPN and Turner will no longer have those rights after next season. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2013/07/23/nascar-espn-turner-fox-broadcast-tv-deal-2015/2578997/ Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12793-nascar-comes-to-nbc-in-2015/#findComment-85967 Share on other sites
Mrtraveler01 738
Part of me wondered if NBC was going to be able to steal the rights away from ESPN. It's becoming very clear that NBC Sports is going after the niche markets (ie: soccer and racing). They really needed to fill in the programming gap during the hockey off-season and picking up these two events will definitely help. I don't think they're able to take down the mothership (ESPN) but them combined with the upcoming Fox Sports 1 will definitely help break up the monopoly ESPN has had on sports for the past few decades. Not a good day in Bristol. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12793-nascar-comes-to-nbc-in-2015/#findComment-85971 Share on other sites
Bars-n-tone 39
You've got it right. It's as much filling the programming grid as it is keeping content from ESPN and FOX Sports 1. Makes you wonder what else is going to get snatched up. I remember bowling on ABC Wide World of Sports. CircleSeven 1955
You've got it right. It's as much filling the programming grid as it is keeping content from ESPN and FOX Sports 1. Makes you wonder what else is going to get snatched up. I remember bowling on ABC Wide World of Sports. OMG, The PBA Tours on ABC was the shit!!!! I was watching it during the final years of that coverage. It doesn't make any sense that ABC has move all the good sports coverage and move it to ESPN, and then you wonder after College Football & NBA coverage, the affiliates can't think of what programming they should air when they don't have sports that week. That two-hour ESPN Sports Saturday is nothing more of a complete waste. And who's watching repeats of primetime shows on late Sunday afternoons? Another complete waste. And since having this ESPN on ABC coverage, they've successfully moved all those events to ESPN, like Bowling and yes, the British Open. Yeah, remember the weeks when west coast stations didn't have the early morning news because the coverage would begin too early for them to do it. Now they air a two or three hour recap on ABC. And they've moved most of those NASCAR Sprint Cup races to ESPN, limiting to just a few airing on ABC. Yeah, that's a nice way to win the southern folks over. Before ESPN on ABC, ABC had a sporting event every weekend. Now you rarely see them air any sporting events outside of College Football & the NBA. And that to me is very pitiful. channel2 979
The reason they're taking sports off of ABC (or, indeed, any OTA network owner is de-emphasizing them there) is because cable channels are their real moneymakers, and they expect fans to pay stupidly high prices to watch the coverage on ESPN, or Fox Sports 1, or NBC Sports Network. While ABC has been robbed of valuable promotional platforms over the years, this doesn't seem to matter much to the people at Disney because ABC isn't as big a moneymaker for them as ESPN. If not for sports coverage, there would be a lot more cord-cutters. Eventually people will get fed up with the extremely high rates and ditch cable in greater numbers than they already are. Eventually something will have to give. CircleSeven 1955
Fox has extended their NASCAR coverage agreement today. Extended through the 2024 season. Will get 3 more Sprint Cup series races and the first 14 Nationwide Series races. It will be interesting to see how much of Fox Sports' programming that would've aired on the local Fox affiliates is going to move to Fox Sports 1 when that starts up. NBC still has quite a bit of weekend sports programming even with the NBC Sports Network, but that might have something to do with fact that NBCSN is in fewer homes than ESPN. I know they talked about moving Fox Saturday Baseball and part of the MLB Playoffs to Fox Sports 1 but that's probably a benefit to the local Fox affiliates who got pretty pitiful ratings from that.
