TexasTVNews 1377
It is with a very heavy heart to tell you that legendary news anchor John Hambrick has died. John Hambrick's TV news career ran from the early 1960s to the 1990s. He anchored newscasts on WNBC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, KRON in San Francisco, WTVJ and WCIX in Miami, KHOU in Houston, WEWS in Cleveland, WCPO in Cincinnati and KBMT in Beaumont, Texas. Hambrick received many professional awards over the years, including an Emmy in 1984 for co-anchoring the best newscast in New York. Please, share your thoughts and perspective about this remarkable, legendary news icon. All of us at TVNT want to offer our prayers and condolences to John's brothers; former news anchors Mike and Judd Hambrick and to the entire Hambrick Family. http://www.chron.com/news/texas/article/TV-anchor-John-Hambrick-dies-of-cancer-4803480.php http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/Former-WEWS-anchor-John-Hambrick-dies-at-age-73-after-battle-with-cancer Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12915-john-hambrick-1940-2013/ Share on other sites
Rusty Muck 4368
John had the distinction of working alongside a pioneering female journalist/commentator in Dorothy Fuldheim at WEWS/Cleveland (Dorothy worked for Scripps' Cleveland Press years before WEWS - the first station in Ohio - signed on). He also helped establish the EWN brand at WEWS seven years after Group W's relocation of KYW back to Philly took EWN - and Al Primo - away from the Forest City. Not to mention that Dorothy had helmed a alternative news program on WEWS in response to the creation of EWN on KYW. He also had the unenviable position of succeeding another pioneering broadcast journalist in Ralph Renick at WTVJ/Miami (Ralph too joined WTVJ - the first station in Florida - before it signed on). After leaving WTVJ a few years later, he joined what was then WCIX shortly after Ralph's declining health forced him to retire from that station. Those little connections intrigue me. 24994J 5575
John also succeeded Joel Daly at WEWS in '67, who went on to pioneer one of the first versions of the EWN format in Chicago at WBKB/WLS. We better stop, we're getting all Kevin Bacon-y. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12915-john-hambrick-1940-2013/#findComment-89019 Share on other sites
10Viewer 334
It had to be very difficult for him in Miami following in the footsteps of Ralph Renick. That combined with the success of WPLG would have been a very challenging situation for anybody. He had to be pretty successful at WNBC for him to be picked to succeed Ralph Renick.
