Nielsen just released today the 2013-14 DMA Rankings List.

Phoenix returns to #12, bumping Seattle to #13; Cleveland drops to #19, moving Orlando up to #18.

No markets have dropped no lower than 3 spots. Lima, OH had the biggest climb, moving 12 spots (from #199 to #187).

Finally my home market (Myrtle Beach/Florence) moved up to 102. Wish I was their on a daily basis to see how the improvement on the newscasts if any.

I blame you for my market going down. I'm at 103.

Look on the bright side, WTAJ is still # 1! (haha, just playing) I know how you feel though.

Not number one anymore. Their product and appearance got better and this year they lost to WJAC... but they just keep getting worse.

Austin moved up five spots from 45 to 40. There's a huge population boom there so it makes sense. Also more high-income people there who are willing to allow cable companies to steal money from them (yeah I don't like cable that much...).

San Antonio is at 36. We'll always be there. We were at 37 for YEARS until we moved up one spot a couple of years ago (swapped with Greenville/Spartanburg/Ashville/Anderson).

I'm actually somewhat worried Austin may eventually have a higher DMA than us...

They deserve it. The Austin stations put far more effort in their product than the stations here do. S.A. stations are such a joke...

Charlotte is going to step up once WJZY is getting their own newscast. I don't know why they're behind with Raleigh.

Probably not. DMA rankings are based on number of TV households in the market. Even though Charlotte is larger than Raleigh, Raleigh is bigger probably because more people watch TV there and it also includes Durham and Fayetteville.

Just like here in S.A., we may be the seventh largest city, but Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Columbus and Cincinnati are bigger DMAs than us. If anything, more people probably watch TV in those markets than here.

I've never liked the system, and Nielsen has so many flaws, but they're the only game in town, you kinda have to go by them...

You were right. San Antonio was at 37 for a minute. IIRC, Austin was as far down as Market #53 in the 2005-06 season, and they jumped up significantly within the last few years, now getting closer to San Antonio. Wow! You may never know. That could be a big possibility.

Ah, I see.

Did the Lima DMA add counties I wonder? I know the adjacent ones mostly dropped (Dayton especially)...

This is the second time I've seen Lima's DMA go up in double digits this way. In the start of the '07-'08 season, they went up 11 spots from #196 to #185. But then in the '10-'11 season, it dropped 15 spots from #186 to #201. So......

And Detroit is STILL holding on to its #11 ranking.

You know what. Since the city's bankruptcy declaration, I seriously thought that they would lose their #11 spot this time around. I know the whole market not only includes the city proper, but it appears it has grown nearly 10,500 from a year ago. But look at Phoenix, which moved to #12. They are only behind Detroit by about 1,100.

Could Phoenix dethrone Detroit in the #11 spot next year?!!

Meanwhile, Glendive continues to hold steady at #210. ;)

But there was a change in the markets greater than Glendive. I'm guess more folks are flocking Central Nebraska, because North Platte bumped Alpena in the #208 spot. Good that Gray sign-on that separate CBS station in little North Platte.

Since this has happened, it its safe to say that Stephen Marks now owns the two smallest television stations in the country.

Make that three stations -- he apparently owns KYUS, which rebroadcasts Max Media's KULR.

Interestingly, I can't find a picture or even a profile of him. For all we know, he could be 100 years old and planning on selling his stations next week. [Would anyone care who bought KXGN?]

I didn't count KYUS (and Marquette's WBKP/WBUP) because that's larger than the two stations mentioned (which are the smallest - (WBKB - #209, KXGN - #210)); it's also his largest station (#168).

And even if a child own KXGN, their operations will still be a status quo. Even if someone would finally buy new equipment for the station. And you know that will take eons, if ever.

What the heck happened in Lima? Population boom?

Lima is a growing place...but these seismic shifts have a lot to do with shifting boundaries. Lima is in Allen County, bordered by Putnam County to the north and Auglaize County to the south. These surrounding counties have gone back and forth over the last couple of years to either Toledo (Putnam) or Dayton (Auglaize). Having a full complement of affiliates now in Lima may keep these counties intact, unless demand for larger market stations on cable forces them to switch DMAs.

Another case of football is with Athens County, Ohio...smack dab in the middle of nowhere between Columbus and Charleston/Huntington. They were always with Charleston-Huntington until around 2006, when they were switched to Columbus. Both sets of "big 3" stations have been available in Athens County, with FOX and UPN/WB/CW coming from Charleston/Huntington. When the DMA switched, WVAH was replaced with WTTE and WQCW was replaced with WWHO....Fast forward four years, and Athens goes back to Charleston/Huntington. WVAH and WQCW replace WTTE and WWHO, and WBNS is dropped leaving WOWK as the sole CBS affiliate available.
