Anyone have any idea why none of the major broadcast nets show all programming in 16:9? Aside from the programming that isn't in HD - why to this day do the nets/cable ops continue to center cut everything?

Then why don't they letterbox?

Because, especially in markets like NYC, a lot of viewers are still watching on 4:3 TVs and local channels are afraid to alienate them.

People who still watch on old TVs don't want letterboxed programming. They don't care if they miss whats going on over in the HD screen space (unless it's a graphic they can't read).

Some Fox stations, including KTVU, have begun sending out a letterboxed SD feed to cable and over the air. It works in a market like San Francisco due to high HD penetration.

The regional sports networks The YES Network and SNY are now formatting their MLB broadcasts for 16:9.

At the start of preseason YES was still formatting for 4:3 however the game on now has graphics placed for 16:9 video.

Sorry to bump a thread but I was something that relates to the topic at hall.

I have noticed on YouTube was that certain elements of WNBC are now full screen such as this two shot taking up most of the 16:9 frame. It appears they have it set up where only say a shoulder would be cut off if this were to be center cut.
