Eat News 4745
All stations have had Brutus for at least a year. We were one of the last to get Brutus. The Tribune guys were here for two weeks installing, testing and finally launching it. What I don't know is how many actual humans are needed to run an MCO hub. When we got Brutus, a big renovation of the master control area came with it. Our master control area has space for four or five people to work at once, even though just one person is usually in there. So if a MC op calls in sick in one city...he/she can be replaced by an op in another Tribube market??? Wow...devious! StandbyStandby 1
So if a MC op calls in sick in one city...he/she can be replaced by an op in another Tribube market??? Wow...devious! Theoretically, yes. As long as you're on the Trib MPLS network, you could dial into another station's BRUTUS server. In practice, probably not. tyrannical bastard 3951
The way Brutus works, pretty much any station could serve as a hub. I wouldn't feel safe as an MCO anywhere. I wouldn't feel safe as a graphic artist either. I'm predicting MAJOR changes at WJW post-Goddard. He's really the last of the old "Cleveland's Own" era aside from Wayne Dawson, Andre Bernier, John Telich and even Bill Martin. The rest of the "long-timers" came in under the FOX O&O era or were market veterans that jumped ship in recent years like Roosevelt Leftwich and Ed Gallek. The rest of the "long-timers" came in under the FOX O&O era or were market veterans that jumped ship in recent years like Roosevelt Leftwich and Ed Gallek. I'm not sure how WJW will handle this. Even those who joined the station in 1996 (when Fox took over) are pushing 20 years. It might get a bit unsettling. I also wouldn't be surprised to see WJW become a MC hub for the small-market Fox affiliates in their portfolio, or for many of the east coast stations. CLETVFan 367
Lorrie Taylor announced on her Facebook page a few weeks ago that she is leaving WJW in Cleveland after 32 years (!) with the station for an out of TV gig in the area. I will miss her reports, and she's been another longtime staffer at the station dating back to the Newscenter 8 days. tyrannical bastard 3951
WJW has historically used this time of year (and the two other times the Indians were in the World Series....1995 and 1997) to do some major revamps. Days after they lost to Atlanta, NewsCenter 8 morphed into the ill-fated "ei8ht IS NEWS!" which New World and Fox did away with a year later. (ABC and NBC had the games back then with their ill-fated "Baseball Network") And in 1997, they revamped their original "Fox 8 News" image into the blue & gold look with Non Stop's "Power News" theme. This lasted until 2002 and the Giant Octopus/Stephen Arnold revamp. (NBC had the WS that year for the second to last time) THIS time....regardless of the World Series (which is also on FOX 8), all eyeballs will be glued to WJW as Dick Goddard's final weathercast is nearing. The baseball stuff that they've been coming out with looks a little better than the mutated O&O look. Tribune is due to give them an overhaul once the dust settles and large parts of "Cleveland's Own" cash in. Weeters 1916
NewsCenter 8 morphed into the ill-fated "ei8ht IS NEWS!" which New World and Fox did away with a year later. WITI used a similar branding ("FOX is SIX/SIX is NEWS") around the same time. Supposedly it was a transitional branding meant to ease people into the full on FOX branding that came after. It was never supposed to last long. Rusty Muck 4374
WITI used a similar branding ("FOX is SIX/SIX is NEWS") around the same time. Supposedly it was a transitional branding meant to ease people into the full on FOX branding that came after. It was never supposed to last long. In the case of WJW, the "ei8ht" logo was based off of a logo the station used from 1966 until 1977. The flip to "ei8ht IS NEWS" came in the heels of longtime GM/ND Virgil Dominic's retirement from the station. When the affiliation swap to Fox took place, Virgil even asserted in a newspaper interview that WJW would never adopt the "Fox 8" name under his watch. He doesn't go as far in the following interviews shown below, but you get the picture. New World appointed Bob Rowe from KSAZ as his replacement, and the "NewsCenter8" brand was immediately scrapped for a brand that nearly broke Eat News. (I dare you NOT to laugh at the promo at :50) Fox closed in on their purchase of New World in August 1996, and WJW was immediately rebranded as "Fox 8" and "Fox 8 IS NEWS." After a new news set was unveiled the next month, the "ei8ht" logo was scrapped, then two weeks later, the "Fox 8 News" brand was finally adopted. Rusty Muck 4374
The cuts unfortunately may already be starting. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10205909430409682 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/15362-tribune-offering-buyouts-at-local-stations/page/2/#findComment-161900 Share on other sites
tyrannical bastard 3951
They couldn't have waited a few weeks...or at least until after Goddard signs off to send people their walking papers?!?!?!?! But seriously.....very....VERY....VERY!!!!! bad timing on Tribune's behalf. And any employee losing their jobs is not good news AT ALL. WJW is probably the lone station left in Cleveland that hasn't been shaken to its' core by their parent company. But now, it looks like it's beginning to happen....
