I imagine WHDH won't be kind enough to share aerial video once the affiliation is terminated. And based on the service provided to San Diego with "Crap Chopper8" I can't wait to see what budget bird the bean towners end up with. Could we be looking at a good old 80's - 90's style chopper war??? Just how do you send a helicopter that far, anyway? It can't possibly have the speed or range to fly the distance itself in a single day. A3N 1002
Well, they could always buy a used helicopter that's closer to the Boston area. I doubt Welk has extra choppers sitting around that it could send to Boston, considering that they have to have backup airships in case one of their main choppers is down. It can't possibly have the speed or range to fly the distance itself in a single day. ...and if you fly it , it's a butt numbing ordeal and very tiring because you have to fly low compared to fixed wing , vibration drives you crazy after 5 hours or so. You don't want to fly alone, but since you have no budget you fly alone...you got no CD player or Ipod inputs...you are flying heavy because of all the gear and fuel and luggage, in n out burgers etc... Friggin corn everywhere...vertigo from corn...corn songs in your head...wondering how crop circles are made...more corn. And you can't just pop on Netflix in the chopper and chill over the Rockies. At least your flying coach on the return leg. So will NBC go balls out..... or R-44? It will be interesting to see if Welk gets to build a brand new custom airship to match the likes of Thunder Muck Truck and Storm Buggy. I'm gonna guess they have a mutual aid deal with Helinet or whoever is the other local player in the area...I would hope. Oh, i'm sure they have a deal in place in case one of their choppers is down for an extended period of time. However, they have a few backups in their fleet so that there's no disruption in service. My point was that having these backups does not necessarily mean that Welk has extra helicopters sitting around that they could send for their new Boston operations. Hell, didn't Welk have to purchase a chopper for their San Diego operations? ( I mean, they were forced to due to customer specifications for the type of aircraft they wanted/needed, but that's a whole different story). Point is, Welk didn't have that extra aircraft available, so it had to purchase one. It's funny because when I tracked the chooper 8 airframe it showed that ship bouncing all around Van Nuys airport like some little news chopper slut. So what do you think they will get? So what do you think they will get? My gut tells me it will probably be a JetRanger, only because WNBC,WRC, and WCAU have them. Why would they spring for an A-Star? I'm sure the mentality is, if the flagship station doesn't have an A-Star, then the others ain't getting one either. The only exception is KNBC, and that's because they need them. They had a nice A-Star....and they crashed it.... Too bad WNBC breaks all the nice toys.. Did they even get a Storm Water Buggy? They would probably break a Big Wheel if they got one. With the exception of NECN, each station has their own helicopter. WHDH currently provides a helicopter signal to NECN. n925tv 143
Welk's N29LW also joined N1231A the fun in Boston. One long helicopter ferry job, that's for sure! As far as the AS350's that Welk has here in SoCal still: N925TV (KTLA), N358TV (KNBC), N12YJ ("OC Hawk" for KNBC), and N61HL (backup chopper). https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=937907033007315 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/15401-boston-chopper-opening/#findComment-165196 Share on other sites

n925tv 143
Didn't Welk have a backup chopper here in San Diego as well? Or did they move that one out? Never really called San Diego home, just ferried it between Pacoima and here when needed. Usually it was the N1231A that was to the rescue here.
