DirtyHarry 727
Why are they branding their news as "Fox 45 News on ABC?" WKEF is the longer established operation. Or are they just trying to ride the coattails of Fox News Channel? Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/15551-wkef-dayton-22/ Share on other sites
Samantha 2896
Who do they think they are, WVNY/WFFF? (In that event, the Fox newscast predated the current ABC operation.) TheRolyPoly 2457
And WRGT is owned by Cunningham Broadcasting while WKEF is owned by Sinclair proper. Does Cunningham produce the newscasts? Cunningham is nothing but a sidecar corporation for Sinclair so you can say that WRGT is also owned proper by Sinclair. NEOMatrix 1300
I'm guessing that WRGT has the better relative ratings than WKEF. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/15551-wkef-dayton-22/#findComment-166897 Share on other sites
Mrtraveler01 738
I'm guessing that WRGT has the better relative ratings than WKEF. Bingo. WRGT has been the perennial basement dweller in the Dayton market. Whereas WRGT dominates the timeslots their newscasts are typically on (mainly because WHIO doesn't air any newscasts during those times). Rusty Muck 4379
Dayton is dominated by WHIO and WDTN. Plus the market is close to both Cincinnati (a S!nclair duopoly) and Columbus (a S!nclair triopoly). WKEF is really a simple spoke in a wheel; an extended news bureau for both WKRC and WSYX/WTTE. Well, WRGT DID use graphics heavily based on the red, white and blue FNC/Fox O&O look after going HD + Sinclair is very conservative... good points. Or are they just trying to ride the coattails of Fox News Channel? When WVNY/WFFF relaunched their news ops in 2008, Nexstar actually opted not just to brand it as "Fox 44 News on ABC22," but used the first-gen Fox O&O graphics too. Of course WCAX 3 owns the Burlington market... As for WRGT, their logo is an all-red rendition of the O&O logo look. It just doesn't look right (not that I was enamored at the logo design to begin with). Plus the Fox O&O theme. That said, that wasn't of Nexstar's doing but that of Smith. Nexstar didn't buy WFFF (and Mission WVNY) until 2013. Breaking News 833
WKEF always had a news operation, but WRGT never had a news operation. The same with WSYX having a news operation while WTTE didn't have one until they became one. Let's see if this video jogs your memory: Fox 28 used to have the same open back in those days. They even had the same TOH station ID. If I remember correctly there were four chicks doing the news before Sinclair bought Channel 6. It was Yolanda Harris, some other black chick (her sister?), Anietra Hamper, and someone else. Maybe Susie Gilbert (Shawn Ireland's -whose real name is Pam- sister! (At some point, Anietra Hamper got promoted to WKEF.) Of course, after Sinclair bought Channel 6, the Fox 28 News department, such as it was, was merged into Channel 6. That's how Yolanda Harris eventually ended up being the lead anchor at Channel 6. The other girl name was C.J and that not Yolanda's sister, but I remember they had FOX 28 Kids Club and Tom Ryan who worked for both at WSYX & WBNS did crime stoppers that aired on FOX 28. However, I don't ever remember FOX 28 having a news team in the 80s or early 90s. However, I left Columbus in Nov of 94. Anything from late 94-Sept 97 I'm wasn't living Cols. I'm surprised they don't at least have their own separate brand. With WSYX and WKRC, plus the dominance of WHIO, the expense isn't worth it for S!nclair. To their credit, they haven't outsourced production of WKEF/WRGT's newscasts to either WKRC or WSYX... yet. To their credit, they haven't outsourced production of WKEF/WRGT's newscasts to either WKRC or WSYX... yet. Thinking about this even more, this doesn't make sense at all. -WKEF is the longer-established operation and has at least some history in the Dayton market; -ABC, leftist as it is, is probably the more respectable news operation; -ABC 22 is the lower dial position; -ABC 22 has the stronger signal; -Dayton is an AFC market, which negates 50% of the reason Fox even exists (Cincinnati and Cleveland are the most popular teams). The only things I can think of are: -Riding the coattails of Fox News; -Fox 45 has the higher ratings (I'll believe it when I see it); -Fox 45 has higher ratings in a younger demographic (slightly more believable, though I don't know too many young people who are into a 25 year old Simpsons); -WKEF has a BAD history in the Dayton market, but Sinclair has a lot of stations with BAD histories, WSYX being one of them; -WRGT has cooler call letters (Wright Brothers).
