You can bet these puppies will be airborne during the royal wedding.

G-SKYN and G-TAKE are both operated by Arena Aviation of the U.K.

G-SKYN is an AS 355 ( an A-Star)

In these first shots we see G-SKYN with it's retractable onmi-directional microwave antenna in the operating position mounted on the skid. The antenna does not retract on its own. Unless you hit the "retract" button you may just land on that antenna.

Both airships have pretty basic looking set-ups. A gyrocam and a single transmitter only. No "bounces" or "hops" with this system...just your basic live TV pictures and not much more.

G-SkyN on the pad.

And now for the BBC ...G-TAKE

Same basic set-up from the same FBO (Arena Aviation)

Happy Flying!

Until this, I didn't even know that France Televisions had a chopper of its own. North American media don't even have their own choppers. Not CBC, CTV or Global. Canada has less people than the UK and yet, the UK have their choppers.

I'm talking national ones of course.

The French choppers are configured primarily for the Tour de France. They are multi-gyro ships with Tx and Rx microwave paths and sub-switchers for the pre-feeds from the motorbikes with microwave that follow the cycles.

Hopefully I can dig into the french airships a bit more in the future.

True, CTV leases theirs but did all the engineering work on their Toronto chopper - (I assume they did the work on the other one in Vancouver). Global uses helicopter feeds/services from a third-party company (who read traffic for other radio stations in the market, Corus/non-Corus). I've never heard of CBC/Radio-Canada having a chopper to their name, anywhere.

I think TVA might own their Montreal chopper.

Got any pics of those ships?

I would love to dig into those a bit more.

CTV has one in Toronto and Vancouver. Global has one in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg iirc. CBC and Citytv does not have a helicopter due to budget concerns.

CTV Toronto and Vancouver uses a Bell 206L-4 Long Ranger. The feed from the Toronto helicopter is also used by its sister station CP24.

Global (and its former stations under Canwest Mediaworks) uses a Robinson R44. They are owned by the Canadian Traffic Network and iirc they have not upgraded the Toronto chopper camera to HD. Shown here is the Toronto variant, decorated with the current Global News decals. Prior to 2009, it was decorated with the decals of former sister station CHCH. During that time, Global Toronto operate a completely different helicopter.

Those are awesome !

I got an ENG chopper woody.

The BBC and Sky News helicopters are rarely in the air. I’d say they’re used less than two hours a week for news gathering purposes - and I’m being generous.

Additionally once outside of London they have to have a receive truck to downlink the images and uplink them via satellite.

The BBC’s helicopter is actually shares its images with ITN but ITN doesn’t get a say in where it goes or when it’s deployed.

Here's one from a CP24 promo shoot. They've doctored up the chopper to display their logo instead of the CTV logo.

CBC never has had a chopper, but City (back when they had a pulse) in the 1990's had a Bell 206 Chopper for a time with a huge WesCam on it. In the later 1990's and into the early 2000's they had a AS350B painted up, both of those flew for a very short period of time.

In the early-mid 2000's, Global Toronto (CIII) had their AS350B flying around the GTA. First known as the "Rodgers AT&T Global News Chopper" it later became the "Global 1 CFRB News Chopper" and then finally simply "Global 1." Their current Robinson is also called Global 1, same with their other stations.

Lousy quality, but here's the A-Star CityPulse had in the late 90's. I recall that in fact they did have a WesCam and transmitter pod on it, but I suppose these promos were shot before those were installed? Or I'm just imagining things!

Global Edmonton promo for the launch of its 'Global 1' helicopter (Robinson R44)

Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, and (as mentioned above) Toronto have the same helicopter as Global Edmonton. All the Global choppers can transmit in HD. CTN is the operator of Global's helicopter fleet, and while radio reports are shared with multiple radio stations in the same market, Global has the exclusive rights to the video footage. If you're seeing SD video from a Global helicopter today, it means the HD chopper is undergoing maintenance and the spare SD helicopter is in the air.

Only CTV Toronto's helicopter transmits in HD. CTV Vancouver's helicopter is still in SD.

It's on the left wing of the helicopter. Here's the same chopper circa early 1990's.
