19 News took a tour with Cleveland mayor Justin Bibb of Reserve Square, the complex where WOIO and WUAB have been located since 1995 inside the basement of this residential complex.

To put it nicely, this place has really gone to hell... Gray should have moved them out when they could have especially when they could have built their own station.

How are the stations handling the issues with regards to their portion of the building? I would assume they do a lot of their own maintenance.

Also, I have to wonder if any of the stations' employees live there? I mean, the short commute has to be a big draw.... 😏

It's been a problem for years.  WOIO employees have had to deal with many of the same issues including rat infestations, being harassed by vagrants, and even the heat going out earlier this year.
Gray really messed up by not pursuing the new studios in Independence.

And in hindsight, they should have moved in with WUAB on Day Drive in their purpose-built studios way back when they merged.

Parmatown may have been booming back then, but it emptied out soon enough as all of the action shifted to Strongsville and South Park mall...

30 years ago, Reserve Square was high-class living, and even had fancy commercials on the radio on how swank it was to live "in the heart of the city".
Sounds like little has been done to keep it viable as more people are moving downtown.  It may as well be a section 8 development in it's current state.

Yeah, that would've been smart.

Hindsight is 20-20 indeed. If not a new facility from the ground up, WOIO/WUAB could've just gone the KMOV route and relocate to an office building that already exists.

I think the impetus for the original move was that OfficeMax wanted the property where WUAB was located to build a store, which they did.  Parmatown was still a thriving shopping area at the time right before the mall began to start shedding anchors and stores to the then-brand new South Park mall in Strongsville.

Fast forward to now,  OfficeMax is long gone (I believe it's a Planet Fitness now) since they merged with Office Depot and began closing many stores, including their once-hometown area.  Parmatown is extinct (it's now The Shoppes at Parma) a de-malled center, and even South Park is showing it's struggles despite being one of the top malls in the Cleveland area.

Their best hope is if WKYC succeeds in merging with Nexstar and their newer(ish) facility is put up for sale when WKYC moves to Dick Goddard Way.  WOIO would be a fool not to jump in and buy it.

Yeah, WOIO should move when I heard that they had no heat hope Gray HQ fixed the heating problem. Why wouldn't Nexstar move into WKYC studios and sell the Dick Goddard Way studio could WOIO move into that building?

I believe the WJW facility is much larger and has two studios instead of one.  And the WKYC studios would probably fetch more on the market.

Honestly, Gray dropped the ball with WOIO moving to Independence. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gray is chomping at the bit to move to Lakeside. It is a technically advanced studio and WOIO could easily spruce up that newsroom.
