Spring Rubber 703
At around 10:02 PM this evening, as Ravi Baichwal was getting ready to toss to a live shot, a minivan crashed through the interview portion of the studio. As of right now, there are no known injuries, and early witnesses are saying that the act might have been an intentional publicity stunt. Firefighters and police officers are currently occupying that portion of the studio, and they're attempting to continue the news as normal from the desk. Phil seemed to be really certain that it was an intentional act, I'm assuming he saw some foul play afoot from his perspective at the Weather Center. UPDATE: From ABC7Chicago.com: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=5852858 I wonder if they tape the Macy's camera... Looking at Google Street View, there really is no way to hit the building, with the large flower gardens in front. The one way you could is to drive up the pedestrian ramp that leads to the alley immediately next to the studio. And as I typed that, they showed it. Somehow the driver managed to go head-on through the far left window, driving up the ramp and between two light poles. Something tells me this was intentional too. For those who aren't familliar with WLS's set, this is a photo of the interview section. Spring Rubber 703
I must admit that in my envisioned situation, Ravi was the one anchoring the newscast. clind 2
Interesting, interesting! Glad to see his instant reaction to this wasn't holy **** or some other rather crude remark, but really, what are the actual chances of something like this really happening to any news station anyway? Like one in a million or something? Still kinda funny to see the reporter on scene not really appearing to know what happened, continuing with her report, but I guess that's someone doing their job correctly. lazynetjunkie 34
The studio didn't suffer too much damage. The window and a couple glass panels inside have to be replaced and the window sill needs to be fixed but that looks like it. Nothing having to do with the building's structure was hit. It's something that would normally only take a day or 2 to fix; however, it may take a day or 2 longer due to the area's glass companies being closed for Christmas. They'll be having interviews again on that set in no time at all. I wonder if they're now going to have those concrete pillars installed outside the windows of the studio. They talked about having that done during the studio construction; however, someone thought that they didn't need them so they didn't have them installed. btbrtq3 0
A car crashed into WLS' TV studio during their 10PM newscast, and apparently their General Manager says that it might have been intentional. There is no video (unless somebody posted it to YouTube), but KNBC said it startled the anchor. Vlad 325
Wow that's pretty rough, especially during this time of year. To be honest, I'm actually not suprised at all that this happened because this is the major risk of building a studio that can be seen from street level. Things like this cannot be ruled out to happen. I hope justice is served to the person who did that. Thankfully no one was hurt and the studio didn't sustain too much damage. They should design the studio in such so that there is some sort of barrier at least inside the studio so that vehicles don't come into contact with the set should something like this happen again. Vlad 325
And you know, this just adds more to a year of unfortunate mishaps and tragedies in the ABC Stations. 2007 was a horrible year for ABC Stations. WABC, suffered the most as they dealt with the fire in May that destroyed their entire studio and the death of their NewsCopter 7 Pilot in October. KNXV in Phoenix dealt with the death of their Pilot as it had collided with another chopper KTVK. And WPVI's Gary Papa's cancer returned yet again. Death of Marvin Zindler on KTRK. And of course the recent crash into the WLS studio that happened on Sunday. There is a lot more but this is just some of the major incidents thus far. What they should do is talk to the city about having barriers placed in a way that you couldn't drive onto the sidewalk. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, they originally talked about having concrete pillars (that's what they're called) installed outside during the studio construction; however, someone thought that they didn't need them so they didn't have them installed. If the station wants to add them, it will be the station that will have to pay for them, not the city. However, how this happened is exactly how it should have happened by the studio/building architect's design like Emily Barr said on today's report. The front set of the vehicle's wheels didn't even make it into the building and there was no broken glass made it onto the interview set itself. There are 2 layers of bullet and shatter proof glass in addition to a strong metal crossbeam tied into the building's steel structure to prevent a vehicle from making full penetration into the studio. The architect designed the studio as if this was going to happen; even if there was an actual interview going on there at that portion of the set and how this crash happened is exactly how the architect planned it. Alot of the other city's buildings have a similar design with their large window fronts/facades so concrete pillars aren't really necessary but a good extra precaution to have.
