New set for WABC?

I remember reading on a TV Insider site that WABCtv was going to move into a newly designed studio where "Live with Regis and Kelly" is shot, and that Live! would be moving to Tony Danza's old studio. But, after the fire all those rumors seemed to go away.

Does anybody have any details on a possible new studio?

Well the rumors still exist, but there still hasn't been any confirmation from ABC nor WABC and the set was recently updated after that fire so I don't think anything is gonna change anytime soon and all of those rumors and speculations are false at least for the foreseeable future especially nowadays when the TV Industry is struggling, the economy is not as well as it used to be and people aren't watching TV as much as they used to, money is tight for the general public, so I don't see it happening anytime soon...

Vlad, your argument holds no weight. If the budget was so tight at WABC, why would they outsource the graphics, instead of getting a new package in-house?

Well DMA, we both know that those new graphics were well in the planning stages for quite a while (since last year), and therefore could've been already payed for well before hand. They were however delayed several times due to technical issues, and plus if they had the money they could've gotten several things done long ago such as getting that new set that we're talking about. There must be another reason behind why they are not getting things done as we see fit...

Anyway as for the set, I think they should first focus on the music first since I don't really see anything wrong with the actual set, of course it may not the best looking set in the market, but it's not awful looking neither, besides it being pretty small. If they add a plasma live screen backdrop behind the anchor desk to replace the Duratrans image they currently use, that would be a very nice touch and a quick remedy for now.

They haven't been in the works for a year, the rumors that they were being done by Hothaus are obviously false. Again, the right terminology would be a RP screen, not a plasma.

I think that WABC's music is fine. I like it better than EWN NG 1. All the set needs is a little tweaking' date=' it's too blue and dark. Like Vlad said, maybe a projection screen and a few other things will make it better. BTW how old is the set anyways?[/quote']

Well the current look debut in January 2005, and was then heavily damaged in May 2007, due to the studio fire, the backdrop they had before disintegrated, and was replaced with a clearer better looking backdrop. However the overall look and familiarity of the set is about 3 years old which isn't too old and doesn't really warrant an update unless they absolutely have to for whatever reason. I think they should take their time as there really is no rush the set is a nice set in my opinion, and a major overhaul isn't necessary.

Its a nice set, but it could be bigger.

It doesn't take a year to build a new set, even a complex one. WABC has plenty of money, if they didn't you would see more onsets, weather walls and plasma screens and less live shots, since they are extremely costly (especially since WABC ENGs are combos and usually once a newscast they use the sat portion of the truck).

The fire would have certainly put a dent into the budget for a new set, maybe delayed it for 6 months, but even so it would be on track. If it is going to construct a set I would imagine it would start now, since the summer is a slower time for ABC production, it can redirect many of the staffers from the other buildings into WABC to help them with construction and destruction of the old studios. I would say we should look for a new set for the August sweeps, but seeing as how they unveiled the new graphics after sweeps, its anyone's guess when we could see a new one. It is likely we will not see a new one, because the new graphics give the appearance of a good refreshed look for the station, too many changes that come too quickly could make the station appear as desperate as some of the other stations.

Also, to reply to Vlad's comment about the new opens. Talent opens are typically done in front of a green or blue screen to enable the editors to chroma out the wall and insert the images in, similar to how weather is done. This gives the editor more freedom to create the open and insert all of the wooshes, swooshes and other effects you see. Sometimes when shooting the open the cameras don't quite move properly or are slightly off, and its just easier if its shot in chroma to adjust the image in editing. This mainly applies to the turn and smile type opens, like at WABC.

The next major sweeps are not until November of this year, although some stations do a local-only July sweeps, but the majority of the stations do it in November, changes are not too commonly seen or made during the July sweeps.

Anyway they have a long way to go, I highly doubt they'll get a new set this year anyway the set is still relatively new and modern so thats really the main reason why I don't see it happening, unless ABC forces them to, don't expect them to get a new set anytime soon... Upgrades are definitely more likely like a Projection Backdrop which would significantly make it nicer, that is very well possible and perhaps a few minor tweaks, but I'm expecting them to remain with what they have for now, they just got graphics anyway, so I think they need a break for now...
