Bucc 4 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 " lottery officials say they do not have a contract with any TV station in the market." http://www.wten.com/Global/story.asp?S=10282929 WTEN stopped showing the Live NYS lotto drawings. So question, how do these negations work? Does NYS lottery pick or do the local stations right for the rights to air the lotto?
qunewsguy 378 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 The local stations pay the state to air the drawings. Highest bidder wins. In this economy, you can bet on less and less stations paying for this "privilege", since it's not a ratings-driver.
IceManNYR 240 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I'm still wondering, if Illinois can show the lottery drawings in HD on WGN why can't NY do them in HD? The live video feed shown on WABC of the NY State Lottery always looks very digitally compressed and not clean.
DMA 135 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 NJN airs the NJ Lotto numbers...the PBS station in Albany should just air it.
Bucc 4 Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 Well apparently the stations don't get money from the lotto to air the drawings, so now knowing that, why waste precious ad (money) time, with something for free. I was wondering if Capital News 9 (Albany's NY1) would air them. http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/may/05/0505_lottery/
ProButtonPusher 230 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 with the internet being in existence, why is it important to air the lottery numbers? As soon as the numbers are drawn they post them now...
Ntropolis 599 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 with the internet being in existence, why is it important to air the lottery numbers? As soon as the numbers are drawn they post them now... Soon they'll just text them to people, if they aren't already...
Bucc 4 Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 with the internet being in existence, why is it important to air the lottery numbers? As soon as the numbers are drawn they post them now... It's not important that they are live, but how we will ever see Yolanda Vega...lol
eyewitness_news 5 Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Speaking of NY Lottery, didn't WABC used to air NY Lottery live? AFAIK Fox 61 and WTXX air CT Lottery 7 nights a week at 10:29p.m. during their simulcast news.
Vlad 334 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 So correct me if I'm wrong, does this mean that stations that carry live drawings of the New York Lottery will no longer have those drawings, because WTEN (where the Lotto drawings occur) is not renewing the contract? Or is it just WTEN that is not airing live drawings in the Albany Area? I don't get it...

Vlad 334 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Oh that sucks anyone know the station where the lottery is actually drawn? They say it's a station somewhere upstate...
Bucc 4 Posted May 14, 2009 Author Posted May 14, 2009 Oh it is upstate, but it's not at a station, as far as I know it is done at the NY lotto headquarters in Schenectady, shown here:

I guess what most people like about live drawings is mostly the excitement and anticipation of seeing the number balls falling out of the container or jar (whatever its called, lol).
Bucc 4 Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 MAJOR UPDATE: The "live" lotto drawings will now be able to be seen in the Albany market on Capital News 9, one of Time Warner Cable's 24 hour newschannel. This is sort of a big deal because: “This is somewhat unprecedented,” said Jennifer Givner, a Lottery spokeswoman. “It’s sort of groundbreaking that the Lottery has never partnered with a cable network or a 24-hour news network before. All of our drawings are currently being aired by affiliates.” full article: http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/jul/29/0729_lottery/ Capital News 9 broke this story this AM: http://capitalnews9.com/content/top_stories/478466/capital-news-9-to-carry-nys-lottery-drawings/?RegionCookie=12
