This is one of what I call "Challenger Moments" - the kind where you;ll remember where you were when you heard. I was upstairs minding my own business when my iDevices went crazy saying "Obama to address nation" and not saying what he was going to address.

Walking to the podium now. Here we go.

FOX News has been quizzically spelling it like that for a while. It's an acceptable alternative.

Well I think it's stupid. Everybody knows its 'Osama', every network and station has put into their lowers and supers the word 'Osama'. Since 2001, it's been known as 'Osama' and the song "Osama, your mama didn't treat you right" lists it as Osama.

Usama... really FOX News? REALLY?!

Correct me if I'm wrong... Osama is the English translation of his name. Usama is the correct way. He is listed on the FBI website as Usama NOT Osama. I don't really know why FOX chose to do that, but it is not incorrect.

It's the same with Moammar Gaddafi and how some news outlets tend to spell his last name as Khadhafy, Qaddafi, etc.

FNC was first to report the news followed by CNN (somewhere between 2-6 minutes after FNC) and then MSNBC.

In fact, the weekend White House correspondent for NBC News I believe was about to break the news, but he was told not to (which would had made them the first to report it had he said it.) I can only assume that that was the information he was given/going to say based on his reaction. With news like this, you want to be certain.

I'm almost certain the reason FOX uses this spelling as a way to prevent the Viz operators from accidentally entering "Obama" and causing the network grief.

Anyways, coverage of this around here was pretty meh. Did CBS feed their special report in HD? Did any other ABC stations have a 5 minute newscast? How many FOX affiliates refused to cut to network until the president spoke?

In Chicago, WGN broke into their live sports show with the news, WFLD was at the end of their newscast, mentioned it briefly, before FNC coverage broke in. After network coverage ended, WBBM, WMAQ AND WLS started their Sunday 10PM newscasts. Can't say how long each lasted because I'm watching the cable news channels.

Major disruption to primetime, especially in AZ and Mountain time zones. Networks are going to be scrambling to refeed their shows to the affiliates. Only 45-50 minutes of The Amazing Race, for instance, aired in Phoenix. Sacramento, Tucson, and Yuma also affected by the same issue (remember, KOVR's a little odd).

Around here WRDW-TV (CBS) cut to network coverage late and then cut to local news at 11, because apparently local stories matter more than our national security. They cut back to network coverage precisely at the time Obama began to speak.

WJBF (ABC) ran network coverage until the wee hours of the morning. They then decided to run their 11pm news at 1am, it was not prerecorded because the anchor commented on what time it was.

WAGT (NBC) ran network coverage over their 11pm news, then ran their 11pm news at midnight.

WFXG (FOX) provided no network coverage, but when do they ever except when its scheduled? So reruns of How I Met Your Mother ran like normal.
