  1. Good luck with that. WCVB has been ABC since Day 1 and is one of America's strongest ABC affiliates. In fact, Hearst has several including KOAT and WISN, among others.

  2. WLS will usually feature video from a game or two a week, usually from the same team that's featured on the morning newscast flyover/live shot. Back in the day, Mike Caplan would do weather at 4 from some school's pre-game. They do have some partnership with a lesser-known site for prep coverage, too, and it'll be mentioned in a OTS with a few scores/results rattled off. However, that seems to hold off til later in the season. I know the Tribune trio has rather comprehensive coverage, though the radio and newspaper presence is strongest, with WGN only making a few mentions, most often on Instant Replay on Sundays. I can't really speak for the other stations, though. Oh, and with the Wolves coverage, they have nothing to do with the production. What goes out over the air is the stadium graphics package with the same set of broadcasters, no matter the channel. I know WPWR 50 had games in previous years, and I'm pretty sure 5.2 carried matches back in the Nonstop days.

  3. Even if it is just the Wolves it's good to see 7 expand its sports coverage further. Even if it's only on 7.2. On a sports note while I'm thinking of it does 7 or anybody in Chicago make a big deal out of high school football on their late news (like extended highlights or something)?

  5. Very smart move. Otherwise I'm sure many would be fired for interrupting live shots and photo bombing camera angles at the Today Show.

  6. All 5 original O&O ABC stations have dabbled in "we're number 1!!! Look at us!!!" At one point or another. The difference in how any station projects itself has a lot riding on the talent. WLS in particular is so stiff that it's as if the product is built to project that image. The copy is certainly written that way during newscasts, their promos are written that way. Their talent can be lifeless at times. It comes off cold quite often. That can be a liability at times and it's especially bad when you start taking your #1 for granted like 7 seems to be doing... The other 4 7's were always warmer and more inviting than WLS. Now being warm and inviting goes farther than it used to (some of the number one stations in other markets are almost freewheeling entirely). 7 isn't adapting at all to the changes in demographics and attitudes vs. just 10-15 years ago and it's hurting them. Sure they slapped a new coat of paint on it and they are redecorating but the product needs to be freshened as well... Otherwise this nagging that 5 is doing will become much more annoying for them.

  9. The IBEW strike is over. Word is they got everything they had requested.

  10. Ew, I saw Kathy's the other day and thought she came across as super arrogant. "The reason we're so good at it." Ew! Maybe that's why there's another Kathy one, maybe someone else didn't like it either, so they replaced it. Maybe they even had to re-shoot it?

  11. I wonder what the latest is with Renee. If she ends up being let go, this is how I'd like the anchor pairings to shake out: 4pm/6pm/11pm: Jim Rosenfield / Jaqueline London (A Team) 11am/5pm: Keith Jones / Tracy Davidson (B Team) Mornings: Chris Cato / Rosemary Connors (C Team) Weekend Evenings: Vai Sikahema / Denise Nakano Weekend Mornings: a new team I could conceivably see the A Team doing 5pm/11pm, B Team doing 4pm/6pm, and C Team doing Mornings/11am. I think Chris and Rosemary are better suited for mornings, hence why I'd like to see Vai and Denise on weekends. Having Tracy back in the evenings would be great because we'd have a familiar face on in the evenings (the other three are all hires within the past three years).

  12. I hadn't seen this graphic used before, I think it's the OTS box from the V2 Sports portion of the graphics package? I like it better than the normal one at any rate. They've used it for a political story as well: One other interesting thing the last couple days was this customized for Detroit ABC promo. That VO is definitely an ABC talent and not a Scripps one (I heard her do the tonight on ABC for their TGIT programming last night at 8). I haven't seen them do anything close to this before but it's pretty cool. Maybe it's because ABC does so well here and we're usually their highest rated affiliate?

  13. It looks like CRM slammed Feder without mentioning him by name for his post about the ratings following the cubs win. There were some really good points made that Feder whiffed on completely: http://chicagoradioandmedia.com/news/7717-abc-7-wins-cubs-post-game-coverage-ratings

  15. Wow... probably the most typical "turn of the decade" (1989-91) news open I've seen lately: The blue and pink, bevels, thick drop-shadows, and pixelated fades.

  16. Plus NBC would have to run WCVB as an ABC affiliate for 2 years, as their agreement with ABC doesn't end until December 2018 defeating the purpose of pulling their affiliation from WHDH. If NBC leaves WHDH, the only options they have are 1) Subchannel or primary feed of WNEU, 2) purchase of either WMFP,WYDN or WWDP or 3) the unlikely scenario of going with NECN as the station. Not great options, but unlike Fox with WJZY, NBC already has a news presence in the Boston area, and will likely enter a "News Share" agreement with NECN for whichever option is chosen. Plus, based on the wording of some of the contracts (particularly in sports with separate Cable/OTA partners), NBC may have to black out sports programming, the biggest portion of their viewership. Based on all of these, NBC is just trying to get additional concessions from Ansin, with their only true option based on recent purchase history is moving NBC to WNEU, causing Telemundo to move to 60.2/WTMU-LP.

  17. That's a good point, but on the other hand, Hearst also owns several reasonably strong NBC affiliates (WBAL and WYFF come to mind). So it's not quite assured.

  18. NBC's jockeying for an O&O in Boston? This could get interesting. From what I've gathered Mr. Ansin is not likely to sell anytime soon... I'm not quite sure what to think of the article's speculation about NECN getting NBC programming. It sounds so stupid - but then again, they do raise a point about the spectrum auction. I still don't see it happening unless NBC was really desperate though. As was pointed out, they could even try flipping WNEU to an English O&O. Stranger things have happened...

  19. BOTH. Traditional newscasts will continue. Concepts like "NewsFix" will continue to suck.
