  1. Maybe @Thundershock MN can answer this hypothetical as he’s the spectrum auction and licensing guru. First, NBCU and their Telemundo Station Group are buying many ZGS Group Telemundo stations including two low powers that will be channel sharing with their NBC big “sisters”. So I am wondering with stations channel sharing and all and this new licensing strategy within the FCC could a station such as KFMB “sign on” and register a new TV station for their CW affiliate (assumeably would need to be full power) to gain and force must carry status for cable and satellite companies? As far as I know the CW channel isn’t still on satellite and being a separately licensed full power station would require them to carry the CW. Of course that would incur FCC fees licensing fees (which hopefully the retransmission consent would pay) and other regulatory hurdles such as duopoly rules. But I brought it up for stations that have major network affiliations on a low power sister station or subchannel that would end up turning full power if they elected to channel share.

  2. One thing CBS needs to do is finally go widescreen and push the bug to the right. Maybe they could use the extra screen real estate to stretch out the lower thirds.

  3. I might have to pour a cognac and light a cigar...and ponder the part about apples and oranges. Actually I'm just being a cranky old bitch. Look, If these regional and out of market produced newscast suck so bad then nobody will watch. I remember when KNBC was doing some of the WX for KNSD during the depression...it was sucky...people hated it. They noticed. When people demand a better local newscast they will get it. Affluent communities that can support decent local newscast get OK coverage, because they can support the ad base. Poor communities are going to get crappy coverage if they cannot support the local TV news outlets. The tide will turn as it always does. Happy Thanksgiving

  5. I guess you could call it the 'Australian option'! Obviously, the announcer would still say "with Jeff Glor" in the intro and local promos and that sort of thing. I'm just talking about the "real estate on the screen" idea - and a "less is more" philosophy. I don't know about the U.S. but here in Australia, McDonalds has just started to use this sort of approach - driving on the highways these days, most of the restaurants have removed the actual lettering "M-c-D-o-n-a-l-d-s" with the only signage now being those big "Golden arches".

  6. This is a comment out of left field, but I'll say it anyway. I think the CBS Evening News is better off calling itself the "CBS Evening News" - if you know what I mean. Leave out the "with Jeff Glor" part. And just focus solely on the "CBS Evening News" part. Period. I think it's a stronger brand like that.
