Ya like old WFMZ? 'Cuz here's some old WFMZ — more accurately, a full documentary on the occasion of its 40th anniversary! There's a treat right at the start, too (a snippet of a late 70s/early 80s open; there's another snippet later), and the station history is fascinating! You'll learn things like: -The transmitter used to start the station was found in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where WHFV (also on channel 69) had failed the year before WFMZ signed on the air -The original newsgathering vehicles were AMC Pacers -Tons of other stuff! There's also a sampling of clips from the station's other local programming ventures. After the first half hour, it gets a little deep.

A couple of superficial observations: 1. Noticed the return of the old voiceover on the open. 2. I've always liked Jeff Glor, but Jeff needs to slow down his reads. 3. The lower thirds are way too big. I don't like the persistent headline L3 during the story. Leave that for CBSN. 4. I don't like the montage at the end of the show. 5. Glad to see the CBS Evening News logo match the CBS network logo. Also the CBSEN logo is in a nice linear arrangement, instead of the goofy looking logo we had before. 6. Happy that CBSEN kept the same music.

Today was a major day in broadcasting history and sadly far too people even realize that let alone appreciate it. The start of a new anchor on a evening news broadcast doesn't happen every day.

I'm wondering if this was after their apparently disastrous 96 format change. That may explain why it's so simple. Also, Diane Willis from WNEV!

One thing CBS needs to do is finally go widescreen and push the bug to the right. Maybe they could use the extra screen real estate to stretch out the lower thirds.

CBS wouldn't do it any other way - all over the place.
