  1. I wouldn’t put a labor union in the same boat as a corporation.

  2. That'd be a good one. Maybe call the station "KX 9" after the Charter cable slot or even "KX 2" for the 2 in 27. I just think that if CBS does go on Channel 27, then it needs a new nickname because "KX 4" will be no good anymore (since KRDK took it).

  3. Hilton Howell III isn't to be underestimated. Everyone here talks about how ruthless Nexstar's Perry Sook and the Sinclair execs are, but nobody here talks about how ruthless Hilton Howell III can be. Much like Sook, he also pinches as many pennies as he can if it doesn't benefit him. For instance, WRDW-TV is getting a brand new building in the next year or so. There's talk that it's going to have a helipad (they don't even have a helicopter) and a putting green... and that wasn't anything they requested, that's what Hilton apparently wants at the new property. He might also be getting an office in the new building, even though they're two hours away from Gray HQ. The man has a Caribbean tan in the dead of winter and has injected his face with so much botox nobody knows how old he actually is. He's an interesting CEO...

  5. And see, I totally disagree in re: Doug Myers. Not a match at all. The open probably dates to 1992 at least: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=NGbUnSxm2tQ;t=95 The same channel with the WPBN/WTOM and WWTV/WWUP footage has this WGTU rarity...a news cut-in from May 15, 1996. Evidently it was a partnership with the newspaper. This would have aired during GMA. WGTU did not have a full local news service, so this was among the only local news output on the station along with some sort of 11pm update: Those clips, and some of the short 2000s stuff, really make it clear how much ownership neglected 7&4 (they finally got the Sinclair pack this year — Sinclair is probably the best owner these stations have had in a long time).

  6. Raymie, I would love to have some of the old WTVY footage you shared. WTVY has lost a lot of the historical files for some reason.John Williams passed away in 2011 and I know his family would love to see more. Thanks again for sharing.

  7. Let me put it this way.. A corporation, in this case, a media/broadcasting one, has a lot more influence/power than a labor union and can push their political agenda (whether it's pro-right/left/up or down) out to a lot more people. As overly-idealistic as this may sound; I just don't think it's a good idea for a corporation to ask for a 'donation' or a union to use dues towards anything political. Decisions like that should ultimately be left up to an individual. And despite what SCOTUS says, a corporation is not an individual. Back to you Jim.

  8. After being sacked in the "Black Monday" purge when Young took over WTEN from Knight Ridder, Doug Myers began a long career as spokesperson for Albany International Airport which he holds to this day. Somewhere on YouTube there is a 2015 video from WRGB of him remembering former colleague/fellow purge victim Ed O'Brien.

  9. The original(?) version of "7 Together" from KVIA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=OGzz2A-x4pQ;t=8 WPBN/WTOM in 1993. No open, they were using Firstcom's News Leader: WWTV/WWUP in 1996, with what's most likely another Production Music theme:

  11. Even the last WBMG logo is a vast improvement! (and it looks like their bastard cousins over in Atlanta ripped them off for their CBS 46 logo several years later!)

  12. KX 7 for the 7 in 27 would be good as well. Bonus points if they can get the cable providers to place them on channel 7 to match that.

  14. Yep. They're clearly taking advantage of Pai's new ownership rules that went in effect last Wednesday. The elimination of the "eight-voices test" have made it easier for these groups to acquire a second (non top-4) full-power station in these smaller markets, without a need to request a "failed station waiver". Expect to see more deals like this in the coming days & weeks........

  16. Agreed. Basically Gray is doing now what they couldn't do during Tom Wheeler's commissionership. Quite possibly. I would have to imagine this station would have a much better signal than the LP currently carrying the KXJB calls; I bet the CBS affiliation and KXJB calls will move to the new station and the LP will change its calls to something else, and that'll probably be where The CW ends up.

  17. Of course... The corporation asked nicely for a donation. However the union just took it (your money)...as a condition of employment. A donation is not mandatory in the case of Sinclair and it's desired pac. A union member has NO choice as to where the dues go, and for what "cause". As you were.

  18. Tonight on: A station which has a sports anchor who works Sunday evenings and weekday mornings, a separate reporter (Erika Wachter) on Saturdays, and no one for weeknights.

  19. This genuinely sucks. After Kayna Whitworth left for ABC, she's been the rock in the AM. She'll be hard to replace. FTVLive suggests she'll end up at WFXT. As long as it isn't the Witness Protection Program (AKA NBC Boston) http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2018/1/28/out-the-door-in-boston

  22. It appears that WHLT has all but given up doing any newscasts of their own of ANY kind....and just simulcasting WJTV's with a WHLT bug added to them. They're trying to pass off this as news "from the capital." And of course, WDAM eats their lunch since they're a LOCAL station and have covered the PINE BELT for YEARS...even the Raycom content from around the state sprinkled in (WLOX, WLBT and WMC) mixes better than what WHLT is doing! Hopefully, the Nexstar graphics are coming soon. WIAT 42 CBS WBMG-TV has certainly gone from hell to good and back to hell again. (New Vision saved them and LIN made them terrible again) I'd even take a Nexstar parallelogram over their disaster of a look. (cbs eye) WIAT would be a blessing of a logo. Now if only WKRG would use ANYTHING but that darn Media General music that should have been canned 5 years ago!!!!
