  1. The set was refresh in 1996, but a new one was installed in 1997.

  2. Man, I don't know what was going on at WAVY in the late 70s/up to this, but it sure seems like they wound up in a timewarp for a while. I mean, comparing the seemingly near-zero budget of a lot of this look with - to quote a promo from the era, it's "the difference between night and day".

  3. The transition from "Area 10 Eyewitness News" to "The Daily News" at WAVY took place in 1981. Here's an aircheck of highlights of the last weeknight Area 10 Eyewitness News:

  4. The new set debuted in September 1992. It was met with derision in the local newspaper, calling it something out of a "Batman" film. It would get replaced in late 1995. Still too bad we can't find anything with "USA News"... WSYX trivia: IIRC the executives of Anchor Media, which purchased the station in 1987, were the same people behind Gulf Broadcasting (WTSP, KTSP, WGHP). Anchor also owned KOVR and a few others.

  5. For game show fans out there like myself, O'Connell will always be remembered as the host of the NBC short lived series "GO". Loved that show.

  6. I agree. I even though the Crane pack was used WITH this package until I saw this. More from that same station too: Btw if I do plan on updating existing news open compilations KTVI will definitely be on that list, and so will WRTV and all the Cleveland stations.

  8. Look at this rare find from WESH-TV. Maybe ID Junkie could use this when he gets to Central Florida.

  10. And another thing-- the set for this newscast has the 1979 peacock to the left of the title, and the red/blue trapezoidal N to the right!

  11. I wonder if some of the reorchestration was done by AM Music (Steven R. Allen and David C. Maddux). There's a relevant Copyright Office entry: "KIRO news, the spirit of the N. W.; K I R O radio and TV news Christmas song." (1984) The follow-up theme KIRO 1989/1990 was also done by them, we believe. AM Music also has a "KEZI TV theme" to its name and the original music theme to Almost Live!. Also, that KNSD look had to be so upscale for '88...it still holds up after thirty years, though more as a period piece.

  12. Speaking of Elvis' death, here's that day's news from Antenne 2 (now France 2); the King's death is covered extensively, but the top story is the resumption of Concorde flights to New York: It's not TV, but this is how Elvis' death was announced on the English service of Radio Luxembourg, the legendary pan-European pop music radio station:

  13. All are EQ Vance graphics in his prime! Clips of all 3 Boston TV newscasts in the days after Elvis' death (including Live on 4's predecessor First 4 News), not sure if there are any news opens in this video:

  14. Just uncovered more WCBS newscasts from their short-lived 2 News era in 1996-97 (and note how far the station had fallen-- airing Dr. Quinn reruns at 9AM!):

  15. KTVI must’ve used the Chris Crane pack for a year I guess, cause we now have the first version of its Eyewitness News open.

  16. Not sure if this was posted anywhere else in the forums... KIRO-TV, 1985, an Eyewitness News promo from the "News Specialists" campaign. The music (believed to be by Klein&) has evolved, and is now accompanied by an orchestra, giving it a more lush and bolder sound.

  19. There is, and I always thought it was used by KTBC (as sister stations KDFW, KTVI, WSTM, and WVTM all used Hello). Promos and ids from WMSN Fox 47 from 1990 to 1997, includes a pair of sign offs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8ZkH2K5fXY

  20. As WUAB drops 7am and 9pm news, at least WOIO has expanded their weekend 11pm news to a full hour, the only station in the Cleveland market to do so.

  21. There's no doubt it's E.Q. Vance. Some of the other elements from this period are even more Vance-y; the dotted texture, the animation, the typefaces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=uiflX0e1-pI;t=19

  22. We’ve been on a good streak lately finding rare clips, so I’ll add another to the mix. A rare look at “News San Diego” in 1988 (spoilers: no open of course):

  24. The graphics in the KDNL clip clearly are a mod of the Ellis Communications graphics from that period, but more or less closely resemble the mod of said package that WSMV got about a year or two earlier.
