  4. There have been rare instances of premium channels being blacked out due to retransmission disputes, the only one I can think of was the removal of Showtime (as well as The Movie Channel and Flix) from Time Warner Cable systems during its 2013 dispute with CBS Corporation. That being said, it isn't really a financially smart idea to use a premium service as hardball in a carriage disagreement. Remember, they rely on viewers paying an additional fee to receive the services, and out of approximately 90 million MVPD subscribers nationwide, not many subscribe to multiple premium services and no premium service has a reach comparative to the major basic cable networks. Since they don't rely on advertising, the hit to a premium service's revenue from a retrans dispute would sting more for a premium service that has anywhere between nine million and 30 million subscribers than a basic cable channel that reaches 80 to 90 million subscribers would.

  5. No wonder Fox wants KCPQ/KZJO and KSTU -- that map has a large chunk that's not covered in station logos!

  6. Why infamous? WMC in my opinion is the Memphis market’s only saving grace, I hate the rest of the stations... especially how crappy WHBQ was in the early 90s. WAGA signs off its broadcast day.

  7. She also appeared recently on The Talk as a panelist and criticized Megyn Kelly's blackface comments.

  8. WBFF chief meteorologist Vytas Reid collapsed on the air during his forecast, expected to be okay. https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/weather/bs-md-fox-45-meteorologist-20181101-htmlstory.html?fbclid=IwAR1-i7157k5vk5mFJ9U6D7alNff4_SjxsYhizdZrvNalrY3u7Z6JZEAozVo

  9. They desperately need one. I actually like WCBS’ & WJZ news sets. CBS needs to start dumping a ton of money into KYW.

  10. It's downright ridiculous. These are premium a-la-carte channels that people spend money on (like $15/mo PER channel), and if the provider yanks the access (of course it's Dish, which is notorious for this), then the paying customers SHOULD be properly reimbursed. On the flip side, HBO should allow their paying customers to access their content regardless of the provider, especially if Dish yanks away the access. It could hasten the demise of the "bundle" and encourage others to become a-la-carte services (like HBONow), telling the cable and satellite companies to shove it once and for all...

  11. In the early 1980s, Memphis' WMC did a promo series dubbed "Friendly 5", which based on the comments, was pretty popular by viewers in the market. There were a few versions of it: *The main "Carriage Promo", featuring promo composer Floyd Huddleston and Jimi Jameson of the group Survivor. *The "Summer Fun" promo featuring meteorologist Dave Brown and folks having fun outdoors. *And the "Marching Band Promo", featuring the then-Memphis State marching band, whom played the entire theme instead of studio musicians.

  12. Yesterday was apparently Dave Schratwieser's last day. I didn't catch the evening shows to see if anything was done but he did stop by Good Day for a retrospective and look down memory lane

  13. Thank God! That 11 pm experiment was awful. In a market like Atlanta, a traditional newscast works best especially in the evening.

  14. I don't know why the commenters on this thread are so negative about CBS 3. We watch CBS 3 at 6 and 11 about 85% of the time, 6 ABC about 15% of the time, NBC 10 almost never and FOX 29 never. I almost never watch the morning news on any station, except maybe 6 ABC on weekends, and then only rarely.

  15. WABC recently switched their CG playout over to Ross Xpression (They actually transitioned to a brand new control room as I understand it) I believe other O&O's are going to make the transition to Xpression as well. Yes, the graphics have to be rebuilt in it.

  16. It's bad enough when stations like KYTX blow out anyone locally-known to the viewers and replace them with no-names/talking-heads (which already does them no favors in the ratings game compared to longtime top-banana KLTV), but then let's add something like mum craftiness and chili ingredient debates, oh and an almost-laughable seat-of-the-pants high school football wrap-up show on Friday nights... IMO, Tegna hasn't exactly *added* value to their investment. And as for WFAA (another IMO), if Mike Shapiro (longtime past VP/GM) or Marty Haag (longtime past ND) could see what's up on Young Street now, they'd be spinning in their graves.

  19. I have no idea how the 1982 CBS News ticker bed hung on so long at Nine...it was used even in 1997. Also...oh my, that's a completely different open style!

  20. Demetrius always did the 4-6am and 11am-1pm newscasts from 2015-2017, right? That's gotta be an annoying shift. He probably had to come to work at 2am or earlier and didn't get to leave until after 1pm...all for just 4 total hours of airtime.

  21. Nine Newsflash 1991 - classic breaking news intro (recorded by yours truly) RAI 2 1989 - speaking of classic intros, I taped this as a primary school kid and I freaking love the uber-cool simplicity! (and I always found the blooper so delightfully Italian) TEN "Hard Copy" 1991 - Dope intro! RAI 1 Tempo 1989 - most badass weather guy in the world. Seven "Real Life" 1992 - speaking of badass intros. This was a 6:30pm nightly show in the 90s with Stan Grant. These were all taped by yours truly.

  22. I've moved the International YouTube Findings from the International News forum over here and renamed it the International Video Thread. Hopefully that helps keep the Classic Video Thread especially a little more focused on US/Canada content (and things with relevance to the US).

  24. It's interesting to see how long it took WJAR to adapt while the other stations bought during that period (WVTM, WVIT, KNSD) were redone at a much faster pace. Of course, WVTM under Argyle looked quite bland and WVIT was always a bit of an afterthought under Viacom/Paramount ownership.

  25. It's interesting to see the massive contrasts between O&O's at this point, especially among the ones that had not yet been fully NBC'd. Or how WNBC stood out as being so much sparse versus the others, this the peak of the "red line" era. As much as this was a video for private consumption at the time it was made, I find the use of Jesus Jones' "Right Here, Right Now" to be ironic given a) how badly it aged in six years and b) how only a couple of years earlier CBS was using it in promos for CBS News.

  26. Granite should've been gone already. They ruined WKBW Buffalo to the ground and deserve to be (this is a new term I've made up) in "broadcasting hell."
