WTOL’s Dick Berry retires Sunday after 40 years: https://www.toledoblade.com/a-e/tv-radio/2019/09/27/after-four-decades-at-wtol-tv-toledo-reporter-dick-berry-retires-sunday/stories/20190928049 Candid interview and great perspective from an actual journalist. "The whole media business has become more corporate ... which is affecting how the news is covered, as well as the people you see entering the news business," he said. "A lot of them are not qualified to be in the news business. I just wonder how they got to be where they are.”3 points

Your parents only want the best for you. You can tell they care because people who stream, are the same folks that also vape, speed and use those hooka bongs . The cable tv signal is much more pure and organic, and cable consumes much less electrons for a far more reliable and better signal. Cable is green and is endorsed by Greta the climate girl. With streaming comes corruption of bits and data, hackers and viruses and all kinds of other cooties that pollute those internet streams. Plus... lots of streamers are just plain thugs. Your folks care about you...and so do all of us here at tvnt. BTW... This is what I had for a tv under my folks roof, I had to buy it myself, it got 6 local channels via a telescoping antenna. It came with an earphone. and cost me $69 dollars at Fedmart. When I decided I wanted 13 channels of "cable tv, I bought a cable splitter and tapped off my parents outlet ...thus committing a misdemeanor that could have followed me on my permanent record. We just don't want to see you fall into the wrong crowd of vaping, thuggish hoons, streaming all kinds of derelict programming.3 points

The cable and satellite companies have really jacked up pay TV in their favor by NOT using CableCards (or even clear QAM for that matter) so they can charge away for the boxes, HD fees, DVR usage, not to mention the voracious energy hogs these said boxes are. The streamers have it right by being INSIDE certain TV's and using smaller cheaper boxes like Rokus and Fire Sticks. And there's always the antenna. At least that's free....for now.....2 points

Everybody, I won't be active on TVNT for the next three weeks due to this year's State Fair of Texas starting tomorrow, but I will be active when I get a day off. And CBS 11 (KTVT) will be at the fair every Friday at 4:00, 4:30, 5:00 & 6:00pm. I'll be posting pictures of the team and BTS while I'm at work.2 points

Great they're joining CBS and NBC. I hope they use the Times Square studio for GMA weekend soon.1 point

Pete will probably turn up about as often as he did when Byron Miranda was doing middays, which would be more than we expect, and more than WLS will use Mark McGinnis, now that they're back up to 5 full-timers. It's odd, but NBC has been here before.1 point

See my parents are only 64 (my mother will be 65 next month) and yet neither one of them know the cheaper alternative that is streaming, and they hardly use email at all. You'd think that my own parents would be more adapted to today's technology but nope, in fact when I went to buy my new computer my parents had no idea that there was such a thing as a towerless desktop computer. It is what is but I digress...1 point

KTVU may want to have a word re: the ratings, but that aside, SVN definitely ranks up there and absolutely is the model almost everything we know about FOX today is based off of - from FOX News Channel, to sports, to a lot of the older O&Os even. You could even say that about HDH to an extent--and they're still pulling in great numbers in Boston without a network affiliation. I suspect the Ansin family will sell when Ed dies and it will be to FOX - both in Miami and Boston. Would be really interesting to see if they're handled with kid gloves as an O&O.1 point

My parents (70s) have their routine (Dallas): TV is never on before noon Noon is CNN Off mid-afternoon 4pm - CBS11 5pm - WFAA8 5:30 - ABC World New Tonight 6pm - Jeopardy (TXA21) 6:30 - Wheel of Fortune (CBS11) Prime time varies, but usually the TV is off at 7 - unless Dad goes upstairs for a Ranger’s Game; Mom stays downstairs reading, knitting or possibly watching something previously recorded. 10pm - CBS11 News 10:35 - Colbert They complain about the cost, but when I suggest a cheaper package - that shuts down the conversation... Because they might want to watch HBO or Showtime or VOD or... Whereas I’ve become television’s worst nightmare: someone in their 50s who doesn’t watch TV...1 point

My parents are too old and stupid to handle streaming. Even email's a challenge for them sometimes. I buried a wire, technically illegal, but I told the cable company what I was doing. They don't care - they just wanted a sale. My dad is 85 and he watches a lot of football and futball. My mom is 81 and likes the old movies on TCM and all the woman channels. They both watch the news channels and the local stations.1 point

I guess they're taking advantage of the new kidvid rules. From Variety, GMA Saturday is expanding to two hours for a good chunk of its affiliates beginning next week. Looking at the guides, the two hours won't be together. For example: WABC will air the first hour at 8am, then the second hour at 10am/ET. WLS will air the first hour at 7am, then the second hour at 10am/CT.1 point

I finished the annual rewatch of Today's 9/11/01 coverage yesterday. That Katie and Matt were kept on air from 7 am - 12 pm is a testament to how respected they were as a duo who could juggle the fun parts of the program, but were also absolute pros at breaking news. Tom Brokaw joined them after about 1.5 hours and instead of letting him take over, Katie and Matt remained front and center. Especially when you consider that ABC and CBS cut away from their morning show teams within the first hour and their flagship anchors took over (Peter Jennings, Dan Rather). I've read before that Today was watched by 40 million Americans at the height of the attack coverage, not that that's anything to necessarily brag about. I'm not entirely sure if it's because the duo anchored during the coming of the technology age, but Katie and Matt might be the best team in Today's history. Additionally, YouTube is full of some really great world and national history network news coverage. I encourage everyone to check some of it out. I was in second grade during 9/11/01 and while I remember the day itself, I was too young to remember the context of the news other than the images. Haunting yet fascinating stuff.1 point
