  1. A few clips of KPRC, circa June 1980 - thanks to 'John Dorsey' on vimeo focusing on the Urban Cowboy craze and the premiere of the movie in Houston. Part of the 6 PM newscast covering the premiere - anchored by George Sells, several years before his long run began at WAFB in Baton Rouge. +1 for having KRIV's news van drive into the background and come to an abrupt stop in the final moments of Dan O'Rourke's live shot. Bonus for his review and/or take down of the film itself. A piece from Gilley's in Pasadena, covering the premiere of the movie featuring a package from Dan O'Rourke, whose work ultimately won him accolades over the decade-plus he was with the station. I've always been a fan of his work, and his writing style - including this assessment of the event. The complete version of the package seen in this clip appears in the one below. A bit of the 5 PM program the following day, during the time the "Scene at 5" had become "Ron Stone at 5". Something about the show's open having it's anchor shown being lifted by Andre the Giant and it's weatherman being pecked by a chicken (Wilma the weather chicken, to be specific) in a well-known clip, just makes sense in my opinion.

  5. Keeps it pointed at a receive site and keeps the receive site tracking it. The receive site is typically a remotely steerable parabolic antenna in a dome. It constantly moves automatically with the helicopter. Where with a typical news truck the receive site is positioned and static.

  6. Yes, it is a microwave yagi antenna on a gyroscope that keeps it pointed at the receive site. https://trollsystems.com/airborne-tracking-antennas/skylink-hd-az-el-steerable-high-gain-multi-band-bidirectional-antenna

  7. For those if you're keeping score: (weather was done outside live in various towns powered by the CBS 2 Mobile Weather Lab with Vanessa Murdock (in Manhattan and NJ) in the AM, Lonnie Quinn (in Westport, CT) (who was pre-recorded Thursday) in the PM, John Elliot (in Newark) on Saturday. Wednesday night & Thursday morning (3/12), they used the CBSN New York studio and graphics with Dick Brennan at 11pm and Chris Wragge in the AM. Noon (both days): Inside Edition aired. 5-6:30pm (both days): DeMarco Morgan (who used to work at WNBC from '08 to '12) anchored from KCBS' studio. 9pm (both nights): Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight aired instead of CBSN New York at 7pm 9pm on WLNY. 11pm/E (both nights): Pat Harvey with Jaime Maggio (Thu) & Kristin Smith (Fri) on sports anchored from KCBS' studio (while KCAL is live nearby). Friday and Saturday morning: Elizabeth Cook anchored from KPIX's studio. No local news updates as they chose to do a CBS News update from DC as it would've interfere with KPIX's AM news and the national map for the local weather update. I think should cancel the weekend morning newscast & WLNY's news this weekend and focus only on the 6 & 11 shows whoever will be producing them. (According to TitanTV, they are doing just that, News is on at 9am.) It could been worse, luckily for the mild winter NYC had, there was no severe weather to deal with. For the KCBS/KCAL's, KPIX's and WBZ's anchors and the production crews as well, this is for you: Here's the AM open from KPIX:

  12. There is the theoretical chance that Byron Allen running stations with only his shows (whose production costs have already been paid for) could be profitable enough to survive low ratings, but it's more likely he'll run them as normal stations with outside syndicated product.

  13. Longtime Tampa Bay news anchor Arch Deal passed away on Friday according to a Facebook post from a close friend. He was 88. Deal worked at all three Bay Area network affiliates (WTVT, WFLA and WLCY) between 1958 and 1977 and then worked as air traffic reporter for WRBQ radio. In recent years he had taught college courses and wrote a book.
