  1. As I told @JCB4TV in the Private Messages with him, what Sinclair needs to focus on is either improving the quality of the programming by adding better shoulder programming than those eons and eons of shows no one cares about before they even think about rebranding the RSNs. I think that if Sinclair can do that they might be able to get back on Dish Network and other MVPDs but I think Sinclair is too busy focusing on rebranding and playing low ball with the MVPDs over content to even fix the programming inventory. Fix it first and the rest will take care of itself. What Sinclair is doing is only going to kill off the RSN industry at an even faster rate than what it's doing now.

  2. RSN's are only good for live sports and team-centric shows, All other content is a dumping ground for stuff that few people care about, like golf tours and air racing, along with low-budget documentaries. Move it all to streaming services and just focus on live sports. All RSN's are a big waste outside of live sports.

  4. Not having shoulder programming has doomed RSNs to faster deaths. It was a premium channel and that hurt more, but look at Sportsvue in Wisconsin (1984–85). It didn't even make it a year.

  5. As much as the industry would hate it...it may be time to go to a gametime-only model with these networks (or to just have league packages). The long pause between March and July showed that without any live programming, the FSN networks are a dearth of programming stuck with outdoors shows, senior tennis tours to justify the Tennis Channel purchases, and 43 golf tour shows.

  6. The clip that @bmasters1 was referring to is below, since the WAKR set looks like some that I've seen from that time period, namely for WTWV/WTVA 9 in Tupelo, MS, with that "in the round" desk and keyable oval backdrop. Probably a kit set? Back then, they had the financial backing and shared ownership of their radio partners (1590 AM and 97.5 FM WAEZ, which started as WAKR-FM and is now WONE-FM) The radio stations would be sold off several years later, and WAKC (a result of the 1590 calls going separately) would later be sold to ValueVision, then Paxson, who pulled the plug on news and their ABC affiliation. They covered Akron-Canton decently, but the way it was maligned under the ratings sealed its doom, since the overall ratings sucked, but was heavily viewed in the Akron/Canton area. This also affected its ability to secure programming and advertising, since it was at Cleveland rates.

  8. Even RBR knows what this is: A Big D Upgrade In Play For WFAA "TEGNA has reached a deal with a major Hispanic-targeted media company that will give it improved signal coverage in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. The deal illustrates just how valuable UHF signals have become in a digital TV world."

  9. It appears that WFAA can move 8.1 to the KMPX stick as soon as this deal closes.

  10. The answer here should be more obvious. They'd rather have a slice of UHF spectrum than a slice of VHF spectrum. I bet KMPX turns out like KTBU, i.e. they add an 8.8 WFAA simulcast subchannel. Estrella might then buy the VHF transmitter facility, at which time there'd likely be a call sign and virtual channel swap. If Estrella exercises this option, it's essentially Estrella being paid $14 million ($19 million purchase price for KMPX minus $5 million purchase price in the option agreement for WFAA) to move to VHF.

  14. WIFR debuted this set of graphics when they launched their new 4pm newscast last Tuesday. The weather forecasts also rebranded under the “First Alert Weather” branding, with minor modifications on that end.

  16. It would be a shame of WOIO dumped those graphics this soon. It's the best package they've had since the days of 19 Action News. Nothing in Gray's current graphics portfolio would be nearly as good as the current gfx on WOIO.
