  1. This is especially true in Severe Weather markets now those who archive severe weather coverage to YouTube would have no way of being able to freely access stations such as WIAT, KFOR, the KSN stations, or WDAF if they were to go behind the paywall. I have no idea what the heck Nexstar is thinking but.. this is just not a very smart move. P.S. all of the stations I just mentioned are in markets that are very Severe Weather savy.

  2. I hope you like rulemaking applications, because there are a bunch of them in the FCC today as the TV modifications freeze ends after 16 years! News-producing/airing: KAIT: 8 to 27 KBOI: 9 to 20 KECI: 13 to 20 KCRG: 9 to 32 KFVS: 11 to 32 KHGI: 13 to 18 KHQA: 7 to 22 KRCG: 12 to 29 KRCR: 7 to 15 KTVL: 10 to 16 KTVM: 6 to 20 KVAL: 13 to 28 KVII: 7 to 20 WCYB: 5 to 30 WFXL: 12 to 29 WLUK: 12 to 18 WMC: 5 to 30 WRDW: 12 to 27 WRGB: 6 to 35 WTOC: 11 to 23 Non-news: KHSV: 2 to 21 WAOE: COL to Oswego IL WLMB: 5 to 35

  3. Likely a bump into the Chicago market...they'll keep the facility, and then spring an application to transmit from Willis or one of the western Chicagoland AM towers once it's approved. Currently they're just north of that little jut of La Salle County where WWTO fought for years to get Chicago cable access before eventually getting a spectrum share in town to get it. Yet more unshocking hijinks from Venture Technologies (note WAOE dumped its MyNet affiliation and shows to go paid 24/7, so it's literally a non-factor in Peoria right now).

  4. Some of them make real good sense, while others like KECI, KTVL and KVAL really don't make much sense. They will lose some of their coverage area and will need fill-in translators. Mountainous areas are better in VHF.

  5. Was not expecting the Times New Roman-esque font on the talent names and the titles at the beginning. Looks out of place for the rest of the look. But still quite the find! Heres Maurice DuBois in Sacto:

  6. Well that's... something. Is Lester anchoring from his house with a feed of the studio keyed in now?

  7. So a big follow-up regard WMC. @Samantha mentioned it yesterday (11/27), but I'll make a mention it here. In the light of the FCC finally lifting the freeze on station modifications and allotment subsitutions last month, WMC has now petitioned to move its full-power signal from the problematic VHF-low 5 to UHF 30! The contour of UHF 30 is smaller than the VHF 5 contour. And the reason is to protect Little Rock's KLRT which is also on RF 30. I guess there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hoping that they can finally get out of that VHF-low hellhole. But that's not all. Gray has filed petitions to move five more stations off that VHF dial. And that includes two nearby stations: KAIT Jonesboro, AR petitions to vacate VHF 8 for UHF 27. KFVS Cape Girardeau, MO petitions to vacate VHF 11 for UHF 32. They're also applications filed by other Gray stations who have asked for power increases. KWWT (the Odessa station Gray just bought) have asked to move its antenna facility to KOSA's tower and raise the power to 500kW. WVUE in New Orleans wants to boost its power from 850kW to the full maximized 1MW. KVLY, KNOE & KCWY have also applied for power increases. ______________________________________________ So on an unrelated note, KOLN was granted approval to rebuild its antenna tower. Remember, its original tower collapsed in an ice storm earlier this year. It originally wanted to build a larger tower (1650 ft.) but it has decided to lower the height by 150 ft. (which was the height of their original tower (1500 ft.)). This also affects KSNB's petition to move to UHF 24 (which also proposed to use KOLN's new tower). But that petition is currently under review.

  9. That can be said with radio and TV. So much homogenisation.

  10. Yep, you can hit the big-time right away at your first job in Fargo or Danville or wherever, watching your package air verbatim on News Nation.

  11. Bottom line is, you've seen one Nexstar station, you've seen them all. They have gotten quite good at bicycling stories between adjacent markets. And then there's NewsNation.

  12. I currently live in the Charlotte area but I like being able to occasionally watch the local news from KOLR10. If they go behind a pay-wall, it will leave me without the ability to watch them (since I'm not currently living in the market). I really, really hope that Nexstar doesn't start restricting access to the live streams.

  13. Maybe for Out-of Town viewers. I know newspapers have been under paywalls for quite a few years now and some are free but require you to create an account. The fact that WGN America is not available on any streaming platform in 2020 is absurd. Cable and Satellite will continue to decline in popularity. Wonder if NewsNation would be more popular if it was on any streaming platform ?

  14. I could remotely understand this for out-of-town viewers, but at least make it free for people who live inside the market, for pete's sake! On the other hand, they have the NewsNation debacle and have done little to make WGN America available outside of cable and satellite. What a seriously misguided strategy they have.

  15. I don't know why most companies nowadays still don't put streaming services on TV Everywhere paywalls. It's 2020 and traditional pay TV is declining every year. This is a bad move by them and possibly a safety risk. Will they do this during severe weather events? I swear these station owners are not evolving with the times.

  16. That's a damn shame. But I cannot be surprised. Before the M&A craze, Nexstar didn't even live stream their newscasts online. To this day, most of the pre-2011 Nexstar stations still don't live stream. This latest move is just a stark contrast (a complete 180°) to what the other groups are doing. Scripps, Gray, Cox, even the O&Os, have gone all-in on streaming (especially on platforms (ie Roku & FireTV)). Where's Nexstar on any of this? And what's worse about it, as many folks are cutting the cord like crazy, how about when the power goes out, and they can't watch the broadcast without authentication? You might as well call this a paywall. It's not like they're streaming the entire linear station online.
