This new look cleans up so many of the bulky elements from the 2016 version, so that makes it an automatic upgrade, for me. Better balance of the blue and white elements, while keeping the bare bones structure. And I LOVE the flashes of the peacock colors in certain animations. Not divert the conversation, but I need to take a personal victory lap, here. During the pandemic, I screwed around with some ideas for a new O&O look, and I love that the NBC designers had some similar ideas to me. I didn't share these with anyone, and I had no prior knowledge to what was going to roll out. I kind of predicted the time/temp realignment (pic #1), though I left in the old, full-width social ticker and only slightly modified the 2016 L3s. I also tried out a look that emphasized the use of the peacock rainbow on a white lower third (#2). Anyway...

WMAQ has updated its graphics as of their 4pm newscast. Below are a few screenshots. Surprised we're the first ones to change.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how nice this looks compared to what I saw in the more dull NBC Boston open I posted in another thread. The new open music is, I believe, also the old WCAU open they used for a hot second (and that they continue to use for bumpers and what not). Rest in peace to the old theme I guess.

As of the 4pm newscast, NBC 5 has new graphics and updated music. Sounds like an update to the NBC O&O or different tracks. It's a little more upbeat. Graphics have similar elements of look N but everything is very flat. The bug is different. Animates between the NBC logo and the NBC 5. Seems to be a heavier emphasis on the NBC logo through out the graphics with the bug animation, transitions, and open. I've also noticed new lighting around the anchor desk. Now, if they could just get rid of that desk they'd have such an awesome look now. Attached are a few screen shots I took.

I'll leave it at this. How much of this is purely for grabbing one's attention versus any actual intention of providing some worthwhile, groundbreaking, original reporting that's going to change the world as we know it? That's why I don't care. It's this crying fire in a crowded theater is what's wrong with things today. Just ignore all of these crackpots, and they'll go away, we hope.

Any idea as to who did the 1997 WCMH NewsChannel 4 graphics and open?, WCMH's open is clocked at 2:31-2:40 in this video.
