  1. Some stuff could not be more obvious, like the fact Soo Kim couldn’t afford Tegna in his own right so he needed another private equity vulture who already owns a significant station group just to pay the balance, plus the obvious footsy action with WFAA, KHOU and WFXT. I’m capable of making inferences and can already say this deal is putrid with no benefit to anyone but Soo Kim’s lavish bank account and should be rejected. I don’t even need to see the filing.

  4. I get that not everybody likes what Tegna is doing but I doubt Standard General is going to do a good job at "bringing journalism back" or "making the stations great again", I don't have inside info but I'm on the side of "this is a bad deal" and that Bryon Allen should of gotten these stations. It would of been much more of a story than another hedge fund taking TV stations down a notch. How is WLNE doing anyways?

  5. I was rooting for Byron Allen to get most of all of Tegna

  6. This interview of CBS News and Station's Wendy McMahon reads not only as a direct indictment against CBS's prior management team, but a direct indictment on Soo Kim's short-sighted attacks on Dave Lougee and Tegna's attempts to modernize their newscasts. The second Soo throws Dave overboard, CBS will hire him in a heartbeat. And you watch as the former Tegna stations forced to adopt the formula perfected by WFXT, the sixth-place station in a five-station market, are subsequently crippled and stifled by a greedy private equity overlord who only wants to cash out in 1-3 years max. CBS's choice of KXTA as their central "news innovation" hub now looks more and more like the shrewdest move of all time. They're going to take advantage of WFAA's inevitable collapse under Apollo and might have seen this one coming.

  7. lmfao WFXT, the "anchor of a new station group." I think it's be called the S.S. Titanic.

  8. That Harry Jessell can see how bad of a deal this is and Scott Jones lets his personal hatred for Dave Youngee cloud his inner judgment is stunning. Jessell is pro-consolidation but he at least cares about the industry and its future. Meanwhile, Scott is stuck in a tunnel vision that newscasts from the early 2000s still work and that you shouldn’t even bother trying to reach younger audiences. News flash for Scott: it’s not 2002. It’s 2022. Harry Jessell won my respect today, and I never thought I’d ever say those words.

  9. Two PRMs have advanced to NPRMs. KSCW (12 > 28) KTVQ (10 > 20) Just a bit of history regarding KSCW. RF 12 was the allotment used by sister station, KWCH. After the DTV transition, folks complained they couldn't receive KWCH's signal. So former owner Schurz decided to switch facilities. KWCH moved to 19, and KSCW move to 12. Fast forward twelve years later, Gray wants the other station off of VHF.

  10. What's going to happen if the FCC denies the deal? They're back to square one, or will Byron Allen gets another chance to acquire Tegna?

  12. Say what you will about Scott Jones at FTVLive.com; he lays it all out about TEGNA/SG/Cox and it a good read. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2022/2/23/the-tegna-deal As well as this too- https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2022/2/23/the-inbox This may answer some of your questions and where things are headed down the road.

  13. Well I certainly didn't expect Harry Jessell to effectively reject this deal like he just did. If Jessell, one of the most business-friendly writers/analysts in the industry, is saying this, then it may be more doomed than you might think.

  14. Maybe replaced by Right This Minute on the stations switching to Coxpollo.

  15. LMAO.. In all seriousness the more I think about it the more I think the press release was probably misquoted or something to that effect, I think that new group is probably setting up a "shell" for WFXT (and actually likely WFAA/KVUE/KHOU too) or Kim is essentially taking Tegna and using the divestiture tool to break up the whole Tegna chain knowing full well that the DOJ would probably treat all 3 entities as one large company. It actually puzzles me why they would actually form a separate company within Standard to run WFXT that would also have the voting rights to the new Tegna yet, Apollo (Cox) won't have any voting rights at all. EDIT: Just read the New York Post article about this deal and it's a holding company that's buying both Tegna and WFXT separately and it would be ran separately. This deal needs to be reworked a bit when they file the application with the FCC, I already have wayyyy more questions than I do answers.

  16. If WFXT is what they consider a great investment of local news, then all stations under Standard are going to collapse. CMG is taking all assets from and dissolving the entire StandardMedia brand. Who knows what this means for WFXT, but WFXT is definitely not news leader. Maybe Standard can turn that around. WFAA hasn't been sold away from the Belo group before. I guess this is the final death knell.

  17. It's only more accessible if you get TV over-the-air and your remote only has arrow buttons -- or your TV has an actual dial. Other than that, I get the feeling you have something against WCNC... I'm sure Graham, Hearst, and Scripps would dispute your characterization of them as "dead-end owners".

  20. There aren't conflicts as Cox Media Group and Standard Media Group are not merging into one company. Yes, it is a bit muddy consider that Apollo will be a banker for each (a non-voting, non-controlling part in the case of Standard General which is the private equity firm that owns Standard Media Group). Since technically CMG and SMG are two separate broadcasting companies there's no need to spin anything off at this time. So in Atlanta CMG will continue to own WSB while Standard will own WXIA/WATL. Interestingly enough there are some swaps in this deal. They don't seem to be included to jump over regulatory hurdles so I find them curious. Cox Media Group acquires Tegna's major market stations in Texas Standard Media Group acquires WFXT Boston CMG acquires current SMG stations WLNE Providence, KLKN Lincoln, KBSI Cape Girardeau, and WDKA Paducah And at least one division will be spun off. Premion, Tegna's OTT sales arm, will become a stand-alone company.

  22. This video begins with a WVEC promo from the 1980s, Take it to the top (portions are cut out, unfortunately). I'm certain it's misdated and is actually from 1983 judging from a tractor pull event advertised at the end - May 20 & 21 were a Friday/Saturday, since 1984 was a leap year and Sunday/Monday wouldn't make sense for such an event. WVEC was using different campaigns after this, For People Like You in 1984 and Spirit of Hampton Roads in 1985.

  25. Just chiming in on this thread. Actually, I composed and produced music for 5 Seattle market TV stations at the same time which all ran concurrently. KOMO TV KING TV KIRO TV KTZZ TV KCPQ TV None of the stations were aware I had done most all of their competitors. This is the first mention of it. There were other stations added to the list. WTVD, WTNH, KOVR, WIXT, KDFW and a few others. Thank you for the info. posted on this site. Dan Dean Dan Dean Productions

  26. I mean, Sam is the former Chief Met for the top-rated station in the country and he's working early AM. I'd be thankful for him if I were ABC. Who get's someone of this caliber to do mornings? Hell, who get's someone of Lee Goldberg's and Sam Champion's caliber on the same airwaves. Nuts.

  27. Given the group's new focus on the CBS News Streaming stuff, and that other stations had dedicated CBSN studio space, perhaps they plan on turning it into a proper studio for CBS News Chicago, or a kind of "hub" for the entire CBS News Streaming operation. If you look at WMAQ's old setup, it's not like you need much to accomplish this. Basically a desk in front of the windows and some lights. They might have to buy some new lights, though. I know they've been holding on to and using fixtures from McClurg Court even on the current news set when it went in.
