Wanted to highlight my edit: I can see how some might have misread my post as justifying Ken's comments, but my intention was the opposite -- I was trying to articulate that even if he didn't get along with her, it is never okay to use a word like the one he allegedly said.3 points

If true, sounds like ABC acted quickly and made the right call. Good on them for prioritizing the workplace environment.3 points

Thankfully it isn’t Kelly herself according to this article but the show’s EP.3 points

Yeah…there are ways to address issues with your coworkers, but that’s a first class ticket to the unemployment line in any profession. It’s a shame, but if true, Ch. 7 made the right call.2 points

Don’t know about you but I think WKBD going independent is going to benefit the station. Not only can CBS News Detroit expand which will only mean more advertising revenue for the station, WKBD can go back to its roots, which is to do OTA live sports again. I for one am excited. Looks like CBS is putting a lot of money into WWJ which only helps its sister station.2 points

John didn't used to do cheap productions. He was the VO for the short-lived big money revival of 21 with Maury and also the original version of the Weakest Link back in the early 2000's. He also was the voice of TVG Network back in the late 2000's. Besides Byron's shows and the awards last night, I'm not sure if he does anything else anymore.2 points

I wish some of the canceled soaps could be revived on streaming, with their episode catalogs avalible aswell. Audiences might be more accepting of streaming soaps now as opposed to OLTL and AMC on Hulu back in 2013.1 point

Even though it was almost 30 years ago with the New World-Fox deal, these stations really had to scramble to fill in some of their dayparts after losing either NBC, ABC or CBS to FOX. Even moreso, if they turned down the Fox Kids block (which most did) and sent that to another station. For about 4 or so years, WJW in Cleveland had an afternoon sitcom block from 1-3pm. Shows included were All in the Family, Barney Miller, Laverne & Shirley, Family Ties, The Odd Couple, and The Jeffersons. They were all past their runs, so it was cheap and easy cash syndication. At the time, it was a way to see a show I hadn't seen in years, as well as being the first time I've ever watched AITF during my summer breaks. By 1998, this block was gone and FOX had secured more syndicated talk shows to fill out the schedule.1 point

I honestly wish that the Soap Opera genre could make a comeback. Like, with some innovative talented writing like the good ole days, I'd like to see new soaps hit the networks. I actually even have an idea for one that takes place on a college campus, which I'd write just for fun if I had the chops for it. But I'm no Agnes Nixon, so... Wishful thinking, I know.1 point

We're super happy with how this set design turned out! Big improvement from the previous version, and uses the space more effectively.1 point

I guess it's because TWC is becoming more irrelevant in the days of Googling the weather forecast and getting tornado warning alerts on your phone. It's another way for Byron to get profit for his cheap game show that has a whopping *$5,000* bonus round. Are you sure it's not 1973? $5K wasn't chump change in those days - with inflation currently, that would be well over $30K in 2023. Anyone remember Flick and a Forecast?1 point

Most of the lingering of 'My' just seems to be more around a united brand and schedule graphics imaging than anything else. With station autonomy in chains pretty much gone, having a fallback brand to group the low-tier stations is better than having to pay someone to create, then maintain, your own station's imaging (see Sinclair's rough Raleigh-Durham duopoly). WVTV tried to go with "Super 18" again for a couple years, but eventually fell back to "CW 18" because Sinclair corporate wanted simple promos with the same design language across all their CW affils they could plug any channel number into. Then you have the HC2 stations that just fit MNTV in so Fox can get some revenue even if the station and subchannels around it are unmanaged and literal digital junk. If it was unprofitable it would have been gone a decade ago, but it seems to be worth it to grab some library content, pump out show promos to feed out and some blue JPEG/Adobe graphics, and call it a day.1 point

I mean, the creation of the WB and UPN was in large part driven by independents' fear of being outcompeted not only by network affiliates and the nascent Fox, but by cable networks... And considering how much bigger cable was in 2006 than it was in 1993, when those two networks officially threw down the gauntlet...1 point

NBCU licenses all ten hours of the lineup in the form of reruns, so it's on them for their continued existence...despite indies themselves often programming two hours of Dateline on weeknights at the same time, and True Crime Network and ID carrying reruns, along with the Dateline Peacock channel itself! It borders on either non-sensical or roadblocking Dateline on everything they can.1 point

Would someone explain something to me please? Why do so many Tegna stations have QVC, QVC2, SHOP LC, & HSN on their digital sub channels? Does Tegna make bank off of these sub channels?? It would seem to me that something like Movies! or Weather Nation TV or Comet would do better at retaining viewers?? KTVD (SHOP LC) KONG (QVC) KING (QVC2) WXIA (SHOP LC) WATL (QVC) KPNX (SHOP LC) WOI (QVC & QVC2) WFAA (SHOP LC) KHOU (SHOP LC) KMPX (SHOP LC & QVC2) KREM (SHOP LC & QVC2) WZZM (QVC & SHOP LC) KARE (HSN)1 point

KSWB has a much larger and more modern plant overall and there's been stories out there about how KUSI's shared building (it has another tenant but it looks like the other part is vacant) needs severe maintenance. There's two miles and roads between each studio, so there's not much complication to merging them together.1 point

David is somewhere between 15 and 16 years, because he arrived in 2000 to replace the late Terry Zahn. I think he may have escaped buyout territory by pure luck of being the youngest out of the 15+ years vets at the station. That being said, I think there the ND and GM could protect a percentage of the staff who were eligible from the buyout, if so, then offer up an inference that that is exactly what ended up happening here, for a number of reasons, primarily being that WVEC currently has the oldest evening news crew in the market. Each of the other stations in the past 5-10 years have shuffled their evening lineups, but WVEC has managed, through its own miraculous ability, has kept Regina, David, Jeff and Scot together. So, they ARE poised to be that archetypal "team you know, names you trust" team. And they are poised to make a run for #1 if what many of us believe will occur when Nexstar finishes eating destroying merging with WAVY's parent, LIN Media Media General. In all, even through all the changes in the market (every station except TVZ has changed ownership hands), WVEC has managed to remain pretty even keeled. What I think in the long run this may do, even though it won't help the books, is it will spur some of the older anchors/reporters/staff to go ahead and put in their retirement papers for the simple fact that, they can't get cut down the line if they're already on the pension. I think a lot of these seasoned vets are sensing the writing on the wall with M&As and industry consolidation and automation, that it's better to go out on their own terms rather than be drug to pasture.1 point

For additional context: A few weeks ago, WABC's corporate sibling, ESPN, fired reporter Marly Rivera for calling a fellow reporter that very word, which ended up on video https://awfulannouncing.com/mlb/marly-rivera-espn-mlb-ivon-gaete.html Not to mention, this is coming after Disney is laying off people across the board.0 points

Shirleen never struck me as a particularly nice or friendly person, but yeah, you can't say that... It's not unprecedented. NBC shunted Days of our Lives to Peacock last year, so I can imagine the other networks may be thinking of doing the same to their remaining soaps. Any day now, I expect ABC to move General Hospital to Hulu and stick in another GMA spinoff, assuming they don't just hand the time slot back to the affiliates.0 points
