  1. They're always good with breaking news.

  2. I'm not sure they're necessarily hiring a bunch of people to replace the ones apparently just let go. I would imagine this is mostly reducing and consolidating staff to cut costs, having most daily graphics come from a central hub.

  3. This has nothing to do with ability or training, this is a cost-cutting measure, plain and simple.

  4. Of course, the bad side of it is people are losing their jobs. The good side of it is there's gonna be new people to make sure that the graphics stick along with the guidelines for all stations without anyone doing anything weird that would catch folks eyes here, like messing up the fonts, logos, headline graphics that don't match the theme of it, etc. Maybe if the folks that were fired would've been trained, and do it right, there wouldn't be any need for that.

  5. And we're going to come back in a few months to do another "retooling"...... How they can maintain stability when they constantly shuffling their on-air talent around?

  6. KCAL's is nice. KYW's is great. I doubt WCBS is going to debut anything remotely poor.

  7. Mary Calvi just announced on the noon newscast that big changes are coming as they are updating their news set. They are on a temporary set until the set is finished. The new set will be unveiled at the end of the month.

  8. For actual breaking news, CNN is far better than MSNBC or Fox News becuase they don't try to have three "analysts" shove a political opinion down your throat. They are actually just telling the story of what's going on. That is great for viewership when something big happens (when more "regular" people watch cable news) but doesn't work when it's just partisans watching.

  9. The Variety article linked above says it’ll debut on the 19th

  10. That looks amazing, especially considering it's a relatively small market. Thinking back to ~2009, which was the last time I saw WMBD in person, it's amazing how far they've come.

  11. More pics of the new logo from the NBCU event

  12. This is a very naive take on the situation. The folks who were let go were incredibly talented. @Geoffrey is correct in that they’re keeping a select few, the only new hire is the vp/group design. Also - what a shitty move, not promoting from within for that role with a very qualified pool of candidates.

  13. I would assume if they could they would have already. With Robertson now gone, maybe CBN will be more receptive.

  14. I would love for Hearst to pick several stations as well...

  15. Very bold look, at least judging from that one image. This is interesting: Wonder if it'll feel more like NBC News Now with the design.

  16. It's not so much "give" as the ABC O&O has right of first refusal for the Monday Night games. After that, the CW/MyTV/indies of the world effectively "bid" to air the games. I'd imagine a similar procedure is at play, for the WNBA game.

  17. Changes like this aren't made lightly so NBC must be feeling pretty confident with themselves. You gotta give them credit for adapting to the times (heavy digital focus) and trying something new. It's not a bad logo. Hearkens back to the old NBC 'N' of the 70s. I might have preferred the diagonal ends be sharp rather than squared off. Also interesting that they've kept the white border on the peacock after ditching it everywhere else.

  18. One would think so, right?! I feel like that’s how things “used to be” - make a big splash with a whole new look - set, graphics, music, logo, etc. Now, those kind of launches are rare and it’s all done piecemeal without a strategy behind it. *off my soapbox*

  19. You know this is a dying industry when all of these companies are being scooped up by banksters and bottom fisher low rent broadcasters like Byron Allen.

  20. Seems like something they should have done leading up to the rebrand, not a few months after the rebrand. Very strange to be stuck on a temp set while trying to grow the new branding.

  21. Now here's an interesting business venture. Apparently, Lilly (or an affiliated venture) has a fitness center in Erie using the "Erie Fitness Now" name, using the exact same logo as their "Erie News NOW" logo. Their website even has a link to "Erie News Now" They even do fitness segments on WICU and WSEE. If it's an affiliated venture, (or even sponsored), shouldn't that be disclosed, even though it's painfully obvious?

  22. Pretty sure “budget constraints” was not the real reason.

  23. Sheesh didn’t realize it was that far back. KPIX only got the O&O Desk and Podium in February 2020 during Super Bowl

  24. Kind of unnecessary, especially considering other NYC sets. Lets just hope the set looks just as good if not better with this refresh, sure it became the carbon copy for a few other O&O stations and it's not a big set by any means but it still looks good, simple but modern. Here's hoping!

  25. Wow. Didn't see that coming. The "old" set held up well. Still better than a lot of the NYC stations.

  29. Too bad WJZ never used enforcer. I always wanted to watch them without having to do so on a resync video from the Internet.

  30. An end of a very long era. The CBS Enforcer has had a really good shelf life in terms of News music.

  31. There’s a good reason why WCBS, WBBM, and KCBS are all in last place in their respective markers. All are a complete and utter clown show. On the other hand, we can clearly see why all the former Westinghouse stations like KYW, KPIX, KDKA, WBZ, and WJZ are all the better performing CBS O&Os based on their handing of the new CBS I&O graphics rollouts.

  32. Yeah. It's a Disney mandate here. They're basically cutting bait with anyone that they think isn't worth keeping around for the money they get

  35. CBS just laid off a ton of design staffers at the O&O level and announced the creation of a centralized design unit. They recently hired someone from outside CBS to be a vp/station group design. A ton of very talented local art directors, designers, and Chyron folks got kicked to the curb today with no notice. Rumor has it the creative services producers are next on the chopping block.

  36. After KOVR switched to the new graphics, all of the CBS O&O stations are now using the new graphics and Dimensional by Antfood. The old graphics and the CBS Enforcer news music package by Gari has been retired.
