  2. My NBC O&O, WTVJ Miami, now airs four and a half straight hours of news every weekday after moving NBC News Daily from 1 to 3pm. Other changes include moving Kelly Clarkson to 11am, Access Daily to 1pm, and shortening their noon news to 30 minutes to once again air South Florida Live as a full half-hour program. https://www.instagram.com/p/DJkHRpWvd7A/?igsh=Ym8yMDU5N3NhdXlx

  3. They also have a 'malicious compliance' version of the logo where the ABC ball is still used...but for the Fox version they just replace the ABC text with the Fox logo. It's technically compliant for its use, but it feels like it's easier to just switch logos without the black ball being needed.

  4. Apparently, it was shilling local food joints on his facebook page that got Mark Johnson canned.... https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2025/5/10/fired-in-cleveland https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2025/4/8/are-these-ads (posts like these) Seems more like a conflict of interest instead of a ethical matter to me. Perhaps WJW may pick him up after all and put him on "New Day Cleveland" once the dust settles. You know, because Nexstar and selling things....

  5. NBC has Peacock, CBS has Paramount+, the list goes on. Now Fox is jumping in with the launch of Fox One ahead of the NFL Season. They're housing Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Weather, Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, Deportes, FOX Local and Fox network all under one house. So is Hulu just going to be primarily ABC after this summer? https://www.fox.com/foxone/

In more news, the pricing for ESPN's direct to consumer service is out: https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2025/05/new-direct-to-consumer-offering-to-be-singularly-branded-espn/ $29.99/month or $299/year for everything ESPN (all the ESPN-owned channels, all the sporting events on ABC, ESPN+).

  10. Which throws me for a loop when I watch, but small potatoes. Did they do that just for the ease of simplicity knowing they're getting the new graphics package eventually (which, if history keeps up, there will likely not be any network logos on that logo), or would it have been just as easy for them to take the entire ABC logo out and place the Fox logo in?

  13. I wonder if WOIO has any desire to hire Mark Johnson once his non-compete is up. WKYC too. Not sure if WJW would take him, even though they are a vastly different place with Scott Sabol as the oldest one there after Andre's retirement. In this post-Goddard (and even post-Bernier era), Mark Johnson was the senior meteorologist for the market, starting at WEWS in 1993. He took over the chief position at WEWS 10 years later after they demoted Brad Sussman, who had taken over for the legendary Don Webster. Enjoy this YouTube video that's aged a little poorly over the last day or two. It came out 9 years ago.

  14. This, and it's been this for almost a year. If you look at the KOTA Facebook, they have used an affiliate-less logo in the profile pic since August 2024, around the same time they folded the KEVN/"Black Hills Fox" branding into the KOTA Territory banner. Looking on Wayback.org, I had to go to June 2024 to find a KOTAtv.com homepage that had the ABC logo adjoining the call letters.

  15. I'm sure something will come to light about Mark Johnson's firing, but it may be tied to him hawking merchandise on the side. This is scuttlebutt based on Reddit and should be taken with a grain of salt. Makes me wonder what it would take to get James Spann canned. He has enough of a following that would riot in the streets if anything happened to him. But he is very good at explaining all sides of an issue, whether it's weather related or not, and does a good job trying to tow the line and/or staying neutral on controversial issues. Good meteorologists often negotiate the leeway to market themselves outside of their news roles, especially if they have existing speaking or educational arrangements in place. Whatever Mark Johnson may have done was probably out of line with his contract and Scripps exercised their right to terminate for cause.

  16. Meteorologist Colton Williams is heading north. As I previously mentioned he left KTUL at the end of April and was helping KJRH and still is until the end of the month, then he will be heading up I-35 to Wichita and joining the KAKE First Alert weather team and will start in June doing the 4pm newscasts Monday through Friday.

  21. Gray has a job opening that may suggest the company might pull a TEGNA and consolidate its creative services marketing departments. The job opening is for a video editor/producer for Gray Creative Group, which “handles the marketing and content initiatives support for all Gray-owned and operated TV stations.” I’m not 100% convinced that Gray will pull a TEGNA here. When Gray bought out Meredith, the company had to rebuild the local creative services departments that Meredith eliminated in a “make ourselves look better to prospective buyers” cost-cutting move prior to the buyout. It makes me wonder if Gray Creative will just fill in gaps at local stations that can’t hire marketing producers.

  22. Two things of note involving TEGNA: The company has a job opening for a “director of content” to oversee its Florida stations, WTSP Tampa and WJXX/WTLV Jacksonville. FTVLive reported a few days ago that TEGNA planned to effectively merge both stations, so it looks like the company is making good on that plan. Another interesting note: WJXX/WTLV GM Tim Thomas’ LinkedIn profile shows he is now the GM at WTSP as well. Also, TEGNA CEO Mike Steib seems to be in a selling mood. In a phone call with industry analysts, he said, “We are buyers of anything that’s a fit for our mission and our company. And if there’s anything someone wants to buy from us at a price that is more than it is worth to our shareholders, we’re interested in selling it.” TEGNA might be in a buying mood if the FCC does loosen or eliminate the ownership cap, but I think TEGNA knows it can make more money by selling stations to the likes of Nexstar or Sinclair.

  23. The Fleur de Lis is probably the most sacred of all above being referred to "Fox 8". It was a brilliant move by the Bensons when they bought the station, and carried on to this day. And after reading the comments, potentially losing the "Fox" branding is causing some viewers to lose their minds, because they tie it with a certain "news" channel.

  24. The comment section on @TheRolyPoly's FB link has some people calling out the dropping of FOX for the call letters already... And most are not kind. Hopefully someone is reading the early speculative feedback! Agree that when you're on top of the mountain, you need to indeed innovate and stay ahead of the game, but don't blow up what you're known for (read- the branding, the logo) Isn't a Fleur-De-Lis in NOLA like hiving a lone star on just about anything in Texas? Lots of local and regional pride that goes along with it.

  26. Please don't tell me they're rebranding as WVUE 8..... Come on Gray.... "FOX 8" is what put them on top of the ratings, WVUE is branding of an also-ran ABC affiliate that was pounded by WWL and WDSU 30 years before Fox came calling. These Fox stations don't quite have the ability to stand on their own like their other affiliated stations. Anything else would be foreign to their viewers.

  27. WUAB has had either horrendous or generic branding ever since “Hometeam 43” in 1999. Between “Hometeam”, “(my)43 the Block,” “CLE43”, and “UPN/my/CW 43”, I don’t think Raycom has put any effort into branding WUAB, or even WOIO for that matter. Honestly, it’s nice to see Gray trying.

  28. I get that sentiment and agree with it but it’s probably unlikely that viewers determine who they watch based off of set design.

  32. "43 The Block" couldn't have come at a worse time. They had just lost the Indians and Cavs to cable and WBNX was starting to clean their clocks in the ratings by smartly investing in programming. WUAB had been burned in the past by some deals (notably Webster reruns) but managed to get some good syndication as well. WUAB's strategy at the time? Bulk up on informercials and create a bunch of amateur comedy-mercials with comedian-hosts like Mike Polk. Even he lampooned these efforts in WUAB's 50th anniversary special! https://youtu.be/pKW-7sccPDY?si=wXH-3IGg7AZEDKbf&t=1242

  34. And after reading the Reddit posts, there are *allegations*... I don't think WEWS has another Joel Rose on their hands, but if there's any proof that comes out, then that's a different story. EDIT: I think the FTVLive article is putting these allegations to rest. The peanut gallery has all of their opinions there based on rampant speculation and some accounts. More likely WEWS over-reacted trying to find a way to cut him loose, since he's been there forever and likely makes more than Scripps wants to pay him. The drain continues to circle at 3001 Euclid Avenue and other lighthouses across the country...

  36. I'm willing to guess that these removals are contingent on affiliate renewals. Gray probably has many of them all over the place due to acquisitions over the years. Even though some like WBKO have adopted the new ABC logo, it's probably staying around for this agreement until that expires. Fox is likely the network that will hold them to some form of dual-branding.
