1. Former WREG and Memphis radio sports personality George Lapides passed away today after a long battle with a lung disease. He was 76 years old, and his death came just days after he signed off of radio for the last time. WREG has an entire section on their website dedicated to their former colleague: http://wreg.com/tag/george-lapides/
2. Are there any other Tribune stations pulling this kind of stunt, or just them?
3. Imagine if Scripps did the same in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, or even Arizona. When other station groups start doing this, it'll be time to panic.
4. So, by their standards, Saturday's going to be a shitty day to go outside.
5. And that new anchor is Caitlin Lockerbie, who just joined WATN after previously working at WJZY in Charlotte. Here's video of her farewell from WJZY last month:
6. It's still a circle. The only difference is the new logo is no longer beveled along the edges.
7. Either that or they've decided to outsource its sports coverage to a local radio station (most likely to WHBQ-AM).
8. WHBQ reporter Lynnanne Nguyen is heading to KDFW in Dallas/Fort Worth. Her first official day on the job is April 25th. http://www.fox4news.com/about-us/anchors_reporters/121774783-story
9. It's one of those luxury smartwatches similar to what Motorola and Huawei offer.
10. We're talking logos. Not choppers (though I'm not sure if KSNV had a news helicopter at one time under its previous owners).
11. They kinda did (albeit the typeface is different).
12. Well, as it turns out the new face of WREG's Daybreak was really more of a promotion from within the station than an actual new person joining the staff. Reporter Stephanie Scurlock has moved to weekday mornings to anchor alongside Markova Reed as of today (she was previously a weekend anchor before then). Not sure what this means for Adam Hammond though since he wasn't on air this morning. EDIT: Per Adam Hammond's Facebook page, he recently accepted an anchor job at a news station in another city. Unfortunately, WREG was unwilling to let Hammond finish out his current contract and immediately replaced him at the morning anchor desk with Scurlock.
13. Per WREG's Twitter feed, the station is adding a "new" face to their morning newscasts beginning Monday morning (adding that she is a familiar one to Memphis television). My guess is that it's Donna Davis, who hasn't been in the news business since 2008 when WMC-TV was forced to lay people off due to budget cuts by Raycom at the time.
14. It's a Cox thing for some reason as I believe WSB-TV does this as well.
15. Former WMC-TV sports director Jack Eaton has passed away at the age of 86: http://www.wmcactionnews5.com/story/31132588/beloved-sports-director-jack-eaton-dies-at-86
16. How is this going to work considering the station already has four meteorologists on staff, and Van Horn would be their fifth?
17. WLBT's story on Bert Case's passing: http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/31073456/legendary-reporter-bert-case-dies-after-extended-illness WJTV story: http://wjtv.com/2016/01/28/legendary-newsman-bert-case-passes-away/ There will never be another personality like that in Jackson, MS television.
18. With Scripps likely to ask for a stake in the ABC network in return under that scenario.
19. Your guess is as good as mine that there are definitely some turbulent times ahead over at 1960 Union. That's kinda odd for a TV station outside of the Eastern and Pacific time zones to have a newscast that late in the evening when everybody else goes no longer than 10:35pm on most nights.
20. That's what I thought too unless they're planning to have a "tag team" set up with Brittani and Lindsey splitting weather duties in the mornings (WREG does this in the evenings with Tim Simpson and Jim Jaggers).
21. Didn't see that one coming, although the writing was on the wall that he was probably going to be leaving WHBQ soon when they moved Joey Sulipeck back to weekday evenings and Brittani Dubose to weekday mornings.
22. No kidding. The old graphics alone were a mishmash of Look A and their attempt at mimicking Look F.
23. It's a Sinclair thing for some reason not to start their news at the same time with all the others. WZTV is the same way as they start their morning news a half-hour later than when WKRN, WSMV, and WTVF begin theirs at 4am.
24. WATN/WLMT in Memphis is retooling its morning newscasts starting Monday, changing from "Local 24 News Good Day" to "Good Day Memphis". John Paul (formerly of KHBS/KHOG) has been named the new morning/midday co-anchor (replacing Rodney Dunigan, who left the station in early August) alongside Joy Lambert. They will also have a new traffic reporter as Chelsea Chandler replaces Ron Taylor. Also, WHBQ Chief Meteorologist Joey Sulipeck has been moved back to weekday evenings as of this week.
25. Definitely a no-no, but hey, if they can't see your legs (let alone your feet) on live television, then it's no problem. Right?
