  1. WTLV, Jacksonville, 6 p.m., 1972 -- note the preponderance of serious stories about civic affairs in place of today's random shootings, fires, and accidents:
  2. Indeed. Both the "1" and the "Action News" font in those 1981 were different from the design used before and since. (And it even then, it was used inconsistently. The "12" in the lower-thirds is the traditional design.) Here are two clips of KPNX -- or KTAR as it was known at the time -- from 1978:
  3. KPNX, 10 p.m. news, 1982 (now with Hello News): KPNX, news promo, 1981: KPNX, news promo, 1985 (a full minute of "We're going where you're going"): KPNX, news promo, 1981: KPNX, news promo, 1981 (w/ Tom Brokaw): KPNX, news promo, 1984 (also w/ Tom Brokaw): More brand-new KPNX clip on Lottoman17's channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Lottoman17/videos
  4. BTW, Jerry Foster later flew for KTVK in the mid-1990s: KPNX, newsbreak, 1985: KPNX, Troubleshoter promo, 1981: KPNX, NBC Nightly News / 12 Action News promo, 1981:
  5. Another edition of KPNX's 10 p.m. news from the same year, this one featuring Linda Alvarez: And a 1980 promo for a special with helicopter pilot Jerry Foster:
  6. Another promo from KTVK's "Arizona's News People" campaign, 1987:
  7. Still more... KTVK, news promo, 1989: That's the same v/o person who did KTVK's news opens, right? KTVK, promo with Oprah Winfrey and Cameron Harper, 1987: Another KTVK newsbreak, this one from 1989:
  8. More wonderful Phoenix clips from Lottoman17... KTVK, a wonderful combined World News Tonight / Eyewitness News promo featuring Frank Reynolds, 1981: KTVK, newsbreak, 1987: KTVK, sports promo, 1981: (BTW, who is the person doing the v/o? I think I recognize the voice from CNN promos of the 1980s and '90s.)
  9. This is not a new upload, but it shows what KOOL in Phoenix looked like before it became KTSP:
  10. A franchise renewal promo for TV-AM in the UK (ITV's morning franchise), 1991: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaALFprakEo
  11. And here's KTSP's 10 p.m. weekend news from 1985, using "Best Endeavours," better known as the Channel 4 News (UK) theme:
  12. Speaking of awesome... KTSP, 10 p.m. weekend news, 1987:
  13. Lottoman's Phoenix goodies keep coming -- here's a 1987 newsbreak from KTSP (now KSAZ): BTW, Diane Ryan had previously anchored at KTVK:
  14. Two new Phoenix clips from Lottoman17 -- KTVK's customized versions of the "Now is the Time, ABC is the Place" campaign from 1981:
  15. I'm trying to figure out the chronology here... I assumed that the production music was replaced sometime in 1987 when KTVK adopted the "Arizona's News People" sung jingle (which was based on image campaign),but are you saying that ANP and the related theme had already been in use in 1986, before the clip above was recorded? That's what NMSA says, but I thought they got their years switched. The clip above also has a different announcer than the ANP opens.
  16. KTVK, Phoenix; 10 P.M. weekend news, 1987 -- note a young reporter named Elizabeth Vargas:
  17. I think you're right: If the 1986 look was already in the works at the time (and the close seems to suggests that it was), it's entirely possible that they waited for its launch before adding Kirkpatrick to the open. Do we know when the 1986 look premiered? ***** WLS, Chicago; news promo, 1981:
  18. Speaking of KPNX: 10 p.m. news, 1985: (Did KPNX regularly use cold opens at the time?)
  19. KTVK 9 p.m. promo on KPHO:
  20. WLS, Chicago; 10 p.m. -- I'm sorry, 10:45 p.m., 1982:
  21. WFLD, Chicago; morning news ("Fox Thing in the Morning," a tongue-in-cheek jibe at WMAQ's "First Thing in the Morning"), 1999: (Part 2 is missing.) Part 3: Part 4: Part 5: ***** WMAQ, Chicago; 10 p.m., 1983:
  22. If I remember correctly, WMAQ used this set for the 10 p.m. news and the newsroom set for all other newscasts. (In other words, I don't think there was a daytime version of the skyline set.) EDIT: On second thought, there may have been a daytime version of the skyline set as well. Can anyone confirm?
  23. WMAQ, Chicago; 10 p.m., 1997 -- a few weeks before the Springer/Magers/Marin debacle:
  24. WFLD, Chicago; 9 p.m., 1997: And a revised look from later that year: WGN, Chicago; 9 p.m., 1991:
  25. Indeed. I seem to remember that there was some controversy regarding a Regional Emmy that Harper won for an investigative piece, but a producer later claimed that he or she did most of the work. Does anyone know the details about what happened -- and why Harper decided to leave KNXV? (Or was he forced out?) I know that he left KTVK in '95 because he didn't like the changes the station was making after losing its ABC affiliation.
