  1. I have no idea what they are going to fill the 3pm with. can they move GH back to 3pm and add something local to 2pm so EWN at 4pm has a good lead in?

I have a feeling they are going to fill it with some combination of Jeopardy/Wheel/Millionaire second showings.
  2. It did feel like a test. Oddly enough, Sarah was not on the noon today, Nydia Han was on with Rick. If she does move to weekend evenings, they should just have Tamela or Monica handle the noon with Rick.

Solo anchors do work, but it takes the right person to do it, and I feel not too many are capable of doing it. There are not too many Jim Gardners out there.

And CircleSeven, here change already happened in the sense that the weekend anchor retired last summer. So why not test things out now? It's not like they are changing the music theme.

  3. I gotta say I actually enjoyed it, a lot. Walter solo was a bit boring. I feel like the newscast flowed better with both of them. I guess it helps that I also think Sarah and Walter make a good team, going back to the days when they were fill-ins on the weekday morning newscast before they settled on Matt and Tamela. Sometimes change is good. There's a first time for everything. And I truly believe when Jim does call it quits, two people will replace him.

  4. The mid-forecast hand-off is nothing new. I will say, I don't really like that Tracy was given the lead role, as this is Troy's broadcast, but that's neither here nor there.

So if this was a weekend evening, and the weeknight/chief meteorologist was tag teaming with the weekend evening person, is the chief/weeknight evening person supposed to take a back seat to the weekend evening person?

Same with anchors. The weeknight team is sometimes brought in to anchor Sunday after special events.

Seniority means something, and so does being further up the totem pole.

  5. Yeah, watching the noon show and she's on it. Remember her from the old AccuWeather days. Maybe today she went to WCBS for the morning and noon, and will drive back to Philly for the 5, 6, and 11? I think that's when she is on at KYW.

No she's definitely the morning person at KYW. KYW has three weekday weather people, so maybe one of the others filled in. Btw they have three weekday people bc of WCBS. WCBS had Katie originally and when they got a new person they bumped Katie to Philly.

  6. Katie Fehlinger from CBS Philly is subbing for John doing weather on WCBS and WLNY am shows.

I believe Vanessa went on maternity leave.

Wonder who did the am shows in Philly, as Katie is the am weather person at KYW/CBS3.

  7. prediction: Walter and Summer Knowles will become the new morning team and when Rhiannon Ally returns from maternity leave they will give her the main spot with Rick Folbaum.

Or possibly team her up with Elliott at noon and 6.

  8. There is no reason that they would't except that she doesn't want to do the 11.

Sure there is. They won't pair two women (or two men for that matter) at 11pm in the biggest television market on the number one station. It works at 5pm because the audience is different at that time.

  9. It's almost certain that David will replace Bill on the 6 & 11. Rob would maybe get the 4, however they could also have David do the 4, 6, and 11

like Jim Rosenfield does now in Philly. I would love for Diana to return to 11, but I doubt she wants to.

And I doubt they would team her with Sade at 11.

  10. With regards to those saying that the questions state if the person was no longer at WLS, the question about Tracy actually says if she was no longer at WLS from 4:30am-7am, so that doesn't imply that she would be gone all together, but rather if she were gone from the mornings.

Also, if Jerry leaves, the simple solution is Tracy stays in the am and at 11am WCL, and picks up 12noon; Mike drops the Noon, keeps the 4pm and adds 5pm, 6pm, 10pm; Troy does all weekend mornings; Phil just keeps weekend evenings. To keep Phil happy, maybe give him a special segment during the week on the 4pm (Backyard BBQ in people's back yards during summer, Christmas Lights at people's houses during the winter).

No way Mike goes to weekends. That would be a demotion. And it seems pointless to let Jerry go and hire someone new (although new persons salary would be much less). I don't think a station needs more than four weather people.

  11. As to Rob, I was not implying that he was forced out. You made the comment that Jim hasn't declined over time. I assume you were referring to his presentation. Jim is 65. I was simply stating that I believe Rob is in his upper 60s (youngest kid is a senior in college) and that he hadn't declined in his presentation either (despite the fact that you think he has in 2012), but chose to retire despite still having his A game. So it is possible that Jim could decide to retire too for the sake of enjoying retirement, even though he still has his A game.

As to Marc's replacement, Rick and Monica were both in the mix to replace his as was Rob. I believe they didn't want to break up Rick and Monica, so towards the end, the feeling was that Rob was the leading choice, especially since he was already the primary fill-in for 5,6, and 11, and also had more seniority. I remember reading something at the time, I believe perhaps written by Laura Nachman, but can't find it now.

Lastly, it is laughable that they would ever consider Rick or Brian for the weekend. That would clearly be a demotion!

  12. I believe they celebrated 20 years as an on-air pairing in the last year or so. They both started around the same time - Monica as the anchor of the 6:30 Action News, Rick as a reporter - but they were first paired in 1992 when Action News Mornings went to 6am to compete with KYW-3's News Day.

And let's not forget that period in 03-04 when they were anchoring both Action News Mornings and the Early Edition Of Action News. Really, you can't get much more committed than that.

I wish Lisa didn't get ill either, she is a true pro, but in a way it worked out. Like I said, 6 tends to move the next person up when there's a vacancy. If Lisa had stayed, logic would have meant that one of them (probably Rick) would have moved to the 5pm, with the other one staying on the morning shift.

I find it kind of funny that the topic of replacing Jim Gardner keeps coming up. First off, "replacement" is absolutely the wrong word to use here. Bill Ritter really said it best: "You don't replace a legend. You succeed him." And he should know - he succeeded Bill Beutel (and has done pretty well himself). There won't be a replacement for Jim Gardner. There will be a successor.

Secondly, let's be honest here. Barring any calamity, Jim Gardner is going to be doing the 6 and 11 well into his seventies. He hasn't declined; if anything he's better now than he was twenty years ago, which is remarkable. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

    A few quick notes.

Rob Jennings was the leading contender to replace Marc Howard but that all changed when Lisa got sick.

Jim may have not declined, but neither was Rob, and look where he is now.

Lastly, while Walter is okay on weekend evenings, I think he'd be better with a co-anchor.

  13. Okay, I get that he or she is upset, but they honestly need to get over it. I mean, is there a need to go on and on and on and on and on about it? We've had two (to my recollection) extremely lengthy posts, which to be honest with you, feel like they are repetitive and some parts of which are pointless. Life is full of changes. This is one of those changes. If you can't get over it, stop watching! If you can't stop watching, then stop complaining! There are bigger problems in the world, and bigger changes in life that affect people more dramatically. Same thing with the Saturday into Sunday overnight movie... it's gone so deal with it!!!!! You've expressed your disapproval, so let's move on.

  14. Has WNBC decided what is going to happen to the 2p.m. time slot yet?

Not sure if they have, but the TV listings on their website show a double dose of Steve Harvey. If they don't do the 4pm newscast, perhaps they can expand the noon news and New York Live to an hour each?

  15. Hard to say what happens to Katie, since I have yet to see any promos touting a timeslot change. WFAA did drop the show, so KGTV could also do the same...

Not sure where you read that WFAA dropped the show. They're just moving it to 3pm.

  16. KTVT CBS 11 is bringing the midday news back next week' date=' The station announced that CBS 11 News at 11am will start Monday August 12th. This is the first time KTVT relaunch the midday news since the station's noon newscasts were eventually cut in 2004.[/color']

What are they cutting to make room for it?

  17. I kinda wish they would give Contessa or Erika the weekday Noon/6pm (or Noon/5pm if Shiba were to move to 6pm). Then stick the other one of the two on weekend evenings with David Ushery, and find a new male co-anchor for Pat on weekend Today in New York.

  18. Miami Fox affiliate WSVN is expanding its weekday morning newscast Today in Florida to five hours. Starting on August 22, the newscast will run from 5 to 10 a.m., displacing Live with Regis & Kelly from the schedule. The fifth hour will be anchored by current Today in Florida anchors Christine Cruz and Diana Diaz, with field reports by Richard Jordan and meteorologist Julie Durda providing the weather forecast.

Why does WSVN continue to use the Today moniker for their morning newscast? Seems a little confusing as WTVJ is and has been the NBC affiliate for a while, and uses a similar name for their morning broadcast. Plus, WSVN does't reach/cover all of Florida, as the name implies. Can't they come up with their own, or at the very least follow the FOX format (Good Day Miami OR Good Day South Florida)?
