1. The KSAZ 2018 minute image song is noteworthy if only because it only says Just You Watch, not Just You Watch the Best... Also note the clever use of the large screen on the news set in the beginning! The original slogan was simply Just You Watch — but it hadn't been just those three words since its first year as a campaign, in 1999! (And yes, we have the original.)
2. KRQE's late newscasts were thrown out the window tonight when the building was evacuated for a police situation. KOB, which is across the street, went on lockdown as well. KRQE viewers saw a black screen or color bars:
3. A WCCO weather warning inserted into a simulcast of an ESPN Sunday Night NFL game with the Vikings in 1993. 'CCO split-screens to cut in:
4. Two excerpts of early 80s WCTV. The second one includes the open from the period:
5. A KWQC tape (1 hour 20 minutes) on a 1990 flood in the Quad Cities area: And a WCPX morning cut-in from 1996:
6. They definitely wanted a...simpler look compared to the wild 1994 package they had [08:53]. There's a partial WCAX newscast from 1991 along with the CBS Evening News for November 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=xn_m6qRZ-C4;t=181
7. The Team to Watch inspiration is super visible in this WGRZ promo from 1985:
8. KSAZ is promoting its new newscasts in local avails. The 4pm hour will be anchored by John Hook and Kari Lake. The KUTP 7pm show, the station's first regular newscast, is being anchored by Marc Martinez and Christina Carilla, KSAZ's first outside weeknight news anchor hire in nearly two decades. Carilla comes to Phoenix from the Waterman duopoly in Fort Myers. She was WZVN's morning anchor until being reassigned in April to be a reporter and evening live desk anchor for WBBH.
9. I don't know if this one was posted:
10. This WRC 11pm show from February 12, 1991 features a different cut of their theme at the time. Sounds like they wanted a harder sound for the Gulf War: What would be super-rare from this period was the 7:30 WRC produced for WFTY that ran only 10 months.
11. A WOKR news open and update from early 1985 with the "24 Hour Newsroom" station theme: And if you haven't had your WVEC fill yet, you might after Jim Kincaid talks about lotteries in 1983:
12. KTVK's animation work in the 80s and 90s was done by David Miller. Yes, the same one that wrote their custom music. Tonight Arizona might be the best of the bunch, too. Speaking of AZ rarities...KNXV in 1997! Marc Bailey and Robin Sewell anchor, Ed Phillips with the weather, and Brad Steinke's sports is teased (but missing).
13. A WJTV image promo from 1985 using the We've Got the Touch theme: (WAKA used the opening melody to open its news around this time)
14.
That's from early October 1984 going by the World Series mention...and lo and behold, in the bumper after the open, it's that weird Telesound NBC music that's mushed in with Tuesday9 on the NMSA, alongside music we know is Telesound, from a known Telesound client... Hmm...
Gonna ping @TServo2049 because he will want to hear this... I agree this is the Telesound NBC affiliate package.
15. Thanks. This isn't my regional specialty, so I didn't have a lot of context. It makes sense given when Foulkes started in TV weather that he didn't have a met seal. Looks like the Turn To package was in by the end of '85.
16. I think the WVEC clip is from early 1985! Roger Cawthon was named WVEC's sports director in June 1984 after working there two years, replacing Brad Face. But it's Len Randolph's presence on the 6pm that is interesting. He was the weekend met until around February, when he was moved to the 6 to replace Joe Foulkes. (Foulkes, who had already been the chief met for 20+ years, remained on the 5:30 and 11pm shows as he began his transition toward retirement, which he completed in 1988.) In Newport News at least, the school budgeting process seemed to take shape in March (unfortunately the Daily Press didn't cover Norfolk schools for some reason), so my guess is that this would be from March 1985. Randolph must not have been at WVEC that long. He had previously worked at KENS and KUTV, and by the end of the eighties, he was back in Salt Lake as the weekend met at KSL (apparently he's still there!). ——— This KYTV promo from 1986 features a mix of mid-80s graphics and by-now-out-of-date music:
17. A whole bunch of KDBC promos from 1991. Note the use of Turn To! These appear to predate the introduction of the squares look and use the preceding blue box logo, yet we might be *after* the 1990 theme. (Speaking of blue box logos on channel 4, Steve Savard worked here at the time!) Also dig the Turn To resing with the lyrics "It's time amigo / To let the world know"! KDBC must have been in flux. They might have been using Turn To in 1990, but that wasn't what they were using as late as October 1990 for opens. By October 1991, they had ditched everything, including the logo, and rebooted as News 4 (instead of News 4 El Paso) with the syndicated squares package and the KCBS/WNEV theme.
18. Speaking of things I wanna know... Who wrote this bad boy? It would have debuted in the fall of '87 and is probably related to the KGUN 1988-94 theme. There is a shot of jingle singers toward the end — anyone recognize them?
19. Turned up this letter to the editor from a 1990 edition of the Paducah Sun: OCR mangled the order, but there's an even more interesting 1991 article in here somewhere. It mentions Dan Steele — WPSD's operations and program manager! — who appears on the Copyright Office listing for WPSD Cares About You, and says he composed the work. (No sign of Forrest Turner, though.) There are also two mentions of a Stephanie Hall (née Cratch) who is the main female vocalist for the image song. She also did singing work in Nashville as well as some national commercials as a model (!). There's a surprising amount of detail for market size here - probably helps the two have been co-owned for decades. ——— Speaking of Nashville, from the April 3, 1986 edition of The Tennessean... Looks like they had THREE composers! Worth noting: the open video we have is from the very first day of the new theme! (Unfortunately, nashvilletv.org is still actually down.) The custom work wound up being sorta folded into TM's Spirit campaign.
20. Not having a logo in such a slickly produced promo suggests they were in transition. They did get a new ND around then, so it's not unthinkable.
21. Is that the theme from Star Wars?
22. If KIEM is any indication, they'll get a decent and much-needed boost. I could even see locally originated news in the not-too-distant future. The sale also included the associated Me-TV LPTV station which needs digital conversion. There's no opportunity to add another major network affiliation, so I guess Brady is gonna give it a little go.
23. Lost Coast is owned by Brian Brady and Frontier Radio Management's Jason Wolff (Brady has the controlling share).
24. That It's All Right Here close using the image song melody is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
25. Wait what... How in the world did they not have an evening newscast?
