  1. If anybody watched PIX this morning, they brought in Weather Channel meteorologist Bonnie Schneider to cover the storm, along with Lisa Mateo. Hopefully they hire someone soon; I bet they wish they never let Chris Knowles go.

I think that might be the same Bonnie Schneider who worked at WLVI on the weekends around 2003-ish. Ironic now that she's at their ex-sister station (around the time she was there, WLVI's news graphics were based of WPIX's).

  2. Or they could rebrand like WGN and say "this is New York's very own...PIX11 News at 5" or something like that. I honestly feel like they need to get rid of that train opening anyways and move to a slightly more serious opening and graphics package. Something simple like they had back pre-2010 would be nice.

That's exactly what I was thinking they'd do- "New York's Very Own" is the slogan. I expect it'll be implemented around the station's community programs and events, things like that.

  3. All these shows (except for Springer- because of the fights- and Wilkos- who you don't want to mess with because he threw a chair and impaled it in a wall) need to be cleaned out and replaced with game shows. There's tons of good formats just waiting to be revived. I would, for instance, replace The View with daytime runs of Match Game and Pyramid, and fill the Chew's slot with revivals of The Big Showdown and Split/Second (both because ABC ran them and wiped them near-completely in the 70s- they deserved better fates (though Second got a mid 80s revival)). Over at CBS, I'd replace Chen and her cronies with revivals of Eye Guess and Three on a Match- both awesome games that got screwed over and wiped by NBC.

  4. Hey. So I decided to go back and reup some of my old clips that I did for TVArk over a decade ago. I wanted to see some of the stuff in a nicer format, you know?

I'm starting with this - a montage of WNBC circa 1984. Mostly I wanted to get that two minute cut of Scott Schreer's delicious, delicious theme music.

Good to see you back. I knew that you had given them some clips- you were listed among their contributors- but I didn't know which. Can you upload some of those WCBS "2News" era clips next?

  5. They debuted "Quadcopter 69" on the news this morning and also just now on the news at 5. A drone operated by Lehigh Valley Drones. They flew it live over Route 22. The operator said he worked with news helicopters in DC and has been interested in broadcasting since then. It sounded like he actually approached WFMZ about it, citing a lack of news helicopter in the Valley.

I think it's great, it was a neat shot to see aerial views of 22 @ Airport Road, something we don't see often around here! I wonder how often and what they will use it for.

Quadcopter 69? That sounds pretty badass for a drone. I could see it getting usage, given WFMZ could never get a helicopter unless it was bought out by Hearst (which had a love affair with copters back in the late 90s/early 2000s while on their buying/merging spree).

  6. Does anyone recall how WABC covered the September 11 attack? Did they at any point carry the network coverage, or did they stick with local coverage throughout the day?

I've seen YouTube video- mainly local, switching to national here and there (mainly to swap out anchors).

  7. Similar service to the one that did the tobacco archive stuff, I think, maybe even the same one. (They obviously had some old station IDs on file.) I'd actually never seen a KTVT open from that era either — pretty nice. The second video has a longer close than the NMSA!!

I know! Pre-CBS KTVT stuff is super rare.

  8. 1) This belongs in the 2000-present video thread.

    2) "viewer confusion" with "ABC 28" branding, in which I don't understand why.

Oh, sorry. I forgot that thread exists- and "viewer confusion" sounds like an excuse for "we're changing to be like our sister station in KC, and also shut up".

  9. KSBW in 1993. Brave New World and TVbD graphics:

KSBY used a variation of these 40 Years graphics labeled "In Touch for 40 Years" instead of "Friends for 40 Years" like KSBW. I bet you they had a matching open, too. We don't have any early/mid-90s KSBY.

Ah, Brave New World. One of the most classy, yet underutilized, packages out there. It's too bad Shelly Palmer hasn't contributed the cuts to News Music Now yet.

  10. Well, according to the Game Show News group on Facebook, someone who attended a Pyramid taping said they shot two openings- one for primetime, and the other for daytime. So the thought has crossed ABC's mind. That same poster said that View's ratings have declined from year to year, but I can't vouch for that.

  11. Ironcially, the last daytime game show that aired on ABC was Match Game '90, hosted Canadian comedian Ross Shaffer. And that show wasn't cleared in all markets since many of them started airing the news at 12pm.

Right, and even before then, ABC had been losing faith in game shows- look what they did to Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak. It had been in development since 1983 (the first pilot was hosted by Gene Rayburn as Party Line), and they ended up putting it against the first half of TPIR on CBS and WOF on NBC. It's like they were trying to kill it.

  12. I've also been hearing rumblings of potentially bringing back $100K Pyramid, Match Game and potentially Password if their Sunday Fun and Games lineup this summer does well. It'd be nice to have more daytime game shows- ABC was never really a big user of that style of program. They'd probably ditch View, Chew and GH for games.

  13. Could that WPCQ newscast have been the last one? That was around the time Group W was for whatever reason axing everything it could at WPCQ. The ending of "Bon voyage from channel 36" is weird too.

Yeah- if they cut everything they could while they owned 36, why'd Group W even buy it?

  14. Ok, on a different note - look for a graphics update for May sweeps - along with an update to the ABC "eyewitness news" package from Warner/Gari custom for WABC. This is long in the making and finally coming.

The "clunkiness" of the current on-air image is going away.

We've heard this before- probably not gonna happen. At least for a while.
