Just catching up, but if you include Newschannel 8, I mean WJLA 24/7 (which is broadcast OTA on WIAV 58.3 - albeit ATSC 3.0), there’s constant local news from 11am until Midnight, and if you throw in Good Day DC, it’s straight through from 4am until Midnight… (all without cable TV!). (I’m not sure if LA has that full coverage, but they’re close…) I’m not sure, though of WJLA 24/7’s current live vs. taped in the afternoon, though they were replaying the WJLA 12pm newshour at 1, live from 2-3, then repeating from 3-4. lately, though, I’ve seen some live between 3&4 on the TV at work… Jim

I disagree. Folks I talk to still say “Channel 2” or “Channel 4”, etc. in areas where the stations used the channel numbers, rather than CBS 2 or NBC 4. IMHO, the best way to roll this out would be to use the CBS News Chicago name for the newscast, but include something like this in the intro: You’re watching CBS News Chicago on Channel 2/CBS 2 and online at cbschicago.com. The folks watching OTA are still going to refer to it as the channel number, if that’s what they’ve been using their entire lives… J

NBC Considering Giving 10pm/9pm Back To Affiliates
compubit replied to Georgie56's topic in General TV
But historically in the Central/Mountain (and sometimes Pacific), it was National News at 5:30, followed by local news at 6 (or National at 5, local at 5:30 out west). If a station had a 5pm newscast (typically larger cities), it was more of a “Live at 5” program, featuring lighter news and features. J -
WBRC now has SEVEN meteorologists!
compubit replied to tyrannical bastard's topic in The Weather Lab
I’m guessing they’re bringing in either students or grads from Mississippi State’s program - I know in the past it’s been one of the best broadcast meteorology programs in the country. Jim -
What about localized versions of (classic) game shows? A game show could be designed such that the same questions/clues/puzzles could be used with the ground rules being that all all are taped at the same time/date. (Think a localized version of the $25,000 Pyramid or the British show Countdown (where each game is truly different and all depends on random draw made by the participants…) If there wasn’t dependence on secrecy of questions (e.g., Countdown) a portable set could be created that travels between locales for taping. Keep prizes small (two nights at downtown hotel with Dinner - or exchange between cities - a New York version has 2 nights at a DC hotel and vice versa. Or in the case of Countdown, a Teapot…) Just an idea…

Standard General to acquire Tegna for $8.6 Billion
compubit replied to dman748's topic in General TV
I process the cable bills for work, and Comcast charges $18.95 per month as a “broadcast TV Fee” - this is on top of the package to get cable channels. It’s ludicrous! At home, I have an antenna in the attic and get both DC and Baltimore locals - more than I’d get with cable… Jim- 433 replies

Sinclair Broadcast Group - General Discussion
compubit replied to Smitha A's topic in Corporate Chat
I wonder if this may supersede the league packages? If you want to see the NBA, then this is your only option…. Too many unmentioned details. -
The 6:15-ish rejoin on WRC was still the Look N rejoin. The open was Look S. Can’t say what the close was, as automation clipped the “good bye”…

Don‘t you realize it was recorded 10 years ago - they just re-run the same set each week… (LA and San Diego are the same way, too…) J

Is the “Good Morning, Acadiana” theme gone too? If so, Boo! Jim

I suspect they’re focusing on markets where on-line sports betting is permitted (as well as bandwidth). I wouldn’t think they’d need it on KLAS if the casinos wanted it on-screen at the casinos…. If the casinos want it on screens, they’ll find a way to get it on screens… Jim

I’m thinking this is KLBK/13/Lubbock and not KELP for several reasons - References to the South Plains and the Panhandle of Texas - KLBK referenced the South Plains in one of their 90s opens, plus El Paso would be too far to be covering this area. - Mentions of delayed programming were for One Day At A Time, M*A*S*H, and Lou Grant, which are CBS programs, not ABC programs, as KELP would have carried. KLBK is a CBS affiliate. Jim

WRC will get them in time for the Winter Olympics… Nobody seems to complain - everyone there’s focused on reporting the news… J

I’m surprised it was that high… I had heard of NewsNation through this group, but wasn’t aware that WGN America had rebranded until very recently… Jim

I was working on 2000-2003 newscasts - and was finishing up posting the late 90s I had already converted and uploaded. the good news is that I don’t have to convert the files - the archive will ingest native MPEG-2 files, so I’m just uploading directly. But I’m also consolidating things onto a new storage device on my network (and renaming them, so there’s consistency and easier searchability on my part…). Stuff is spread across multiple hard drives as it is right now… i hope to post more this weekend, after my work project settles down… My focus in uploading is working forward from oldest to newest, but keeping everything older than 10 years old… Jim

Can’t imaging working in their Southeast bureau: “Reporting from the Southeastern bureau of North Central West Virginia’s News Station, I’m…”

I have 2 newscasts from the late 90s/early 2000s from KGWC/KLWY. It was the same newscast (anchor, stories, mispronunciation, etc.), but with different graphics and theme for the Fox feed vs. the CBS feed…. Basically, they either taped it, or aired it live at 9pm, and then took a clean feed and inserted different graphics for the 10pm feed… Jim

I’m uploading as much as I can in my spare time. So far I have 90 newscasts uploaded, mostly 88-92 timeframe and am now working on the 93-95 window. My goal is to have 200 uploaded by Labor Day. I just missed posting a couple of “30 Years Ago Today” newscasts on the actual day (Doh!). After about 95, I’ll have to start digitizing from tape until about 1999, where I have quite a few digitized already…

I have no idea who made the call on closing my account. Vimeo hasn't responded to my request - granted it was using the "Help" form on their page. Their page says "Email Us", yet they don't provide an email address. Most of their contact is accessible when logged in - and I can't log in... I'm pissed - 4 years worth of work spent uploading stuff is all gone... I'm just going to focus on the internet archive - and only stuff over 10 years old (I'll keep collecting current stuff, as that 10 year window keeps moving forward... At this point, if folks download content, so be it. I just want to share all that I have captured and collected over the years. I guarantee, like you said @VHSgoodiesWA, I doubt the local stations have any of this content in their archives - it takes a lot of space and time to manage, and with cost cutting measures everyone seems to be putting in place, a lot of the history is moot to them...

A quick scan of one hard drive has over 1900 files (which basically equate to newscasts, and doesn’t include things on other drives). So it may take a while, since each one has to be uploaded individually… Jim
-
Once I get enough videos uploaded, I'll request a channel. Also, I have to convert the MPEG4 .ts files to MPEG4 .mp4 files... (That I can batch process...) Once they're there, though, I guess there's no protecting them from being downloaded (not that folks didn't find a way to download or capture stuff already...)
-
I guess I'm restarting there... My biggest complaint is that newscasts appear to get broken into 1 minute chunks... (and my experience has also been that it's not seamless between segments...) Jim
-
I've reached out to Vimeo with no response - I've not received any notices (and I checked my email history going back years). The account is just gone... To me, it's one thing if this was something that could be monetized, but these are historic newscasts - which I pretty much guarantee most of the stations no longer have in their archives. It's like blocking history from folks. I could understand if the content were able to be viewed elsewhere (e.g., game shows, cartoons, etc.), but local news is local history that you probably can't get anywhere else. I challenge you to find a (for example) KCBD newscast from February 1994 in any library or even at KCBD itself... I'm pissed as I was given no warning, nor remedy. I guess I need to find a library or something to donate them to, so that they're available for research in the future. I have thousands recorded, and now do I keep cataloging them or just give up? Jim And do I keep recording them into the future??? Heck - most of the copyright holders of the original content aren't even in existence anymore...
