1. San Diego & LA! KNBC July 10, 1991 4pm (along with 5pm & 6pm Opens) KFMB July 10, 1991 6:30pm KGTV July 10, 1991 11:00pm
2. Two 6's (and a 39) - but no San Diego, yet... WOWT in Omaha (May 23, 1992, 10pm) WCSH in Portland, ME (Nov 22, 1992, 11pm - late night repeat) KHTV in Houston (April 7, 1992, 7pm) - This was the last 7pm newscast - moving to 9pm "Tomorrow" (a Wednesday night???) This was toward the end of this round of News on 39 (until 2000).
3. Finishing out from the Trip to Philly/Baltimore/DC - Now the clips from DC. Hopefully I'll find more on another tape... WRC, WJLA & WUSA p.s., more coming tonight (Southern California) after it finishes converting and uploading...
4. Salt Lake City! KUTV KTVX KSL J
5. Waco and Philly! KXXV - Didn't expect to find this on a tape, but here it is! KYW - Eyewitness News at 6pm (whereas 6am and 11pm were using the NewsDay/News Tonight format/studio) WHYY - 1991 - Old Logo & Master Control error at the start... (and including a pledge break!!!) WHYY - 1992 - New Logo Note: there may be short bits missing from the tapes - that's how they were recorded...
6. I do have an answer as to KYW's 6am newscast in late 1991: They were using NewsDay with Pat Ciarrocchi solo anchoring (Howard Eskine wasn't on the scene yet). (Just found a clip) Also at this time, Jennifer Ward did the 11pm news also solo - it sounds like KYW had gutted the staff and was rebuilding. The 6pm Eyewitness News had only Steve Bell solo anchoring (Beverly Williams had been shipped to weekends along with Lou Tilley...) I did find a nearly complete December 1991 Eyewitness News from KYW (Pat was subbing for Steve) and will be posting it hopefully tomorrow... Jim
7. And another quick bit, including KXAN's 25th Anniversary "tribute" - at the end of the newscast, but a quick glimpse of the KTVV open I became familiar with (before I got a VCR...) Promos & IDs recorded off air from KXAN, KHOU, WJSU, KBTX, KPRC, WSVN & KWQC.
8. Ok - it's officially here! Ohio January 1993 - Really love WHIZ-TV's Open - can you get more generic? This Region? This Vicinity? This Area? And The World! - Also, can't place the theme they briefly use on their ID - Not a big fan of WCMH's theme, except for the close - would be interested in hearing the complete treatment - Wish I had more from WJW - the theme is so quiet in the morning newscast... - Unfortunately, no WUAB - the VCR froze up after bringing into the hotel room from the car without giving it time warm up (condensation...). WTRF 12pm; WTRF 5:30pm; WTOV 6pm; WFMJ 11pm; WYTV 11pmĀ®; WKBN 6am; WBNS 5pm; WHIZ (NewsBreak/ID); WHIZ 6pm; WCMH 5pm; WSYX 6pm; WBNS 6pm; WSYX (Close); WCMH 7pm; WSYX 11pm; WCMH 7am; WBNS 8am; WKYC 12pm (WE); WEWS 6pm; WAKC 11pm; WJW 8am; WKYC 9am
9. Here we go with the WJZ, WBAL and WMAR 11pm newscasts from September 17, 1992. First Up: WJZ: No Denise tonight, but someone forgot to change the closing script... (check out the very end of the newscast to see how Al Sanders rolls with it!) I don't remember this open/Chroma Cues variation, but it's not bad. I am trying to figure out what the opening graphics mean... WBAL: First off is the end of the WBAL version of the "This is CBS" promo - I think the 'BAL lyrics are a heck of a lot better than the network ones... Second - The theme doesn't have the same impact (to me) that Pride Inside or Signature have - it's just "there". Finally - Butch Alsandor (nice guy, I met him at Houston Texans or Astros game) was busy that day - it looks like 'BAL didn't have anyone else in the Sports Department there... WMAR: It's good to see Sally Thorner again, before she jumped to 'JZ. Not much more to say on my part... Comparing the newscasts, it's easy to see why 'BAL and 'JZ were/are the market leaders over 'MAR and (the unseen) 'BFF (those cringeworthy clips are coming soon...).
10. Folks - The WJZ and Ohio clips were posted without me finishing up prepping them. I want to share with everyone, but need to get everything finished and cleaned up before posting. As soon as they're done on my end, I'll release them. This is the second time someone has been posting from my site before I got things finished up. I'm posting these out of the goodness of my heart - please allow me the courtesy of getting things prepped and squared away. I promise that I will post them as soon as they're ready. I've been spending many hours of my time getting these newscasts digitized, converted and uploaded. I'm sharing them with y'all, since they do absolutely nothing collecting dust in my basement. I'm posting as I find the tapes. If I have something, especially 1990s or earlier that I recorded, I'm posting as soon as it's done processing. I nearly wet myself (just a joke) when I found the tape with KYW and WJZ (it also has WHYY, WMAR, WBAL and a good chunk of WBFF - so far - there's some DC on it also...). (and yes, I'm ticked off right now - for many reasons - this is just one of them) Jim
11. This just found... KYW's 6pm Newsbeat - Entire Newscast from September 16, 1992 - over 25 years ago! More to come from this magical tape!!! (though a few things are not complete, but close...) Updated 11/28/17 with new link to video - old video accidentally deleted.
12. No - but WAGA was dropping CBS programming left and right around that time... CBS This Morning aired on WTLK/14 (out of Rome, GA) - TV Guide in Atlanta had the show on 12/13/14!
13. Last one for the weekend... This one came from a business trip to New Jersey (Philly area) that spanned 2 weeks, and we had a long weekend stuck in the middle - rather than head home, I headed west... (plus into the nearby markets in the evening...). The Ohio/West Virginia part of the trip is coming soon... - Any idea of the WBOC close music? I don't think it's the same package as the open, but it sounds familiar... - Gotta love WLYH's Action News open - straight from the 70s, IMHO... - Looks like KDKA's morning news ran from 6am - 8am at this point. - Contrary to what the NMSA says, MCTYW aired on WOLF at this time (along with WWLF/56 and WILF/53 - both satellites of WOLF/38). WCAU 5:30pm; WCAU 6pm; WFMZ 6pm; WMDT 6pm; WBOC 6pm; KYW 11pm; WGAL 5:30pm; WLYH 6pm; WOLF 10pm; WBRE 11pm; WYOU 5pm; WNEP 6pm; WMGM 6pm; NJN 7pm; WPXI 5pm; KDKA 6pm; WTAE 11pm; WPXI 11pm; WPXI 5am; KDKA 6am; WICU 6pm; WSEE 6pm Also, everyone, I'm not "holding onto" any clips - as I find them, I'm posting them. I have lots of boxes full of video tapes going back 30 years, along with stuff I've already digitized that's already on DVD right now (chekcing to make sure I'm not redigitizing stuff) - I'm trying to get it onto the computer and posted as quickly as I can, but can only go as fast as the process allows: - VHS/Betamax/8mm > DVD Recorder - DVD > Computer - (If clips) editing he raw footage down - Convert to MP4 - Upload to a hosting site - Link to the site from TVNewsTalk.net - Update my webpage (which I am very behind in doing...) If you've ever followed the process, you understand how long it takes. I've been collecting newscasts for a long time, and processing takes a while for the older stuff... Jim
14. One of today's tapes is from my Gulf Coast trip to the Florida Panhandle in July 1995. WEAR 5pm; WMBB 5pm; WTVY 6pm; WDHN 10pm; WHOA (Promo); WEAR 6pm; WJHG 5pm; WPMI 6am; WALA 10pm; KLFY 12pm ("Meet Your Neighbor"); WLOX 4pm; WLOX 5pm; WKRG 6pm; KATC 5:30pm; WMBB 11am; WTVY 5pm; WJHG 6pm; WPGX 9pm (Audio Only); WSFA 10pm; WALA 10pm (again...) Notes: WHOA is just a promo for their 5pm anchor, but I don't recognize the music; WPGX is audio only - due to Summer Gulf Tropo, WFTS in Tampa in was splattering all over the signal (plus probably WTGS/Savannah was in the mix) - at least I caught the audio and some of the station ID slide...; I'm guessing WPMI was "starting out" their news operation by this time, as they became the NBC affiliate on Jan. 1, 1996 - WALA's owners were already linked to Fox by this time (and WLUK was switching in about a month from this point). Cable in Destin at the time had WEAR, WTVY, WJHG, WMBB, and WPMI (these were the only news-producing local stations).
15. They had a similar (if not the same) 3 inside a square/rectangle (along with 2, 8 & 11 for the rest of the KSN) when they were using NewsWire... Never saw inside a circle... J
16. Somewhere I have the WTVK newscast that's been around the trading circuit, and just pulled some 2004 newscasts off of DVD, but that's about it from Knoxville. Now that I'm back home from Thanksgiving, back to getting stuff off of tape and DVD...
17. I have some SLC which I'm posting soon (probably tomorrow) and have posted all Omaha that I believe I have. (But then again, one never knows what one will find on an unlabeled tape - and I have lots of them!) Jim
18. More clips from the 1994 July/August Indiana/Illinois trip, plus a few leftovers from the Atlanta/Charlotte trip (earlier posts). Few Comments; - I totally disagree with WHBQ's slogan - KFVS had the same graphics back in 1987 - I'm still a big fan of the Everyday News Package Jim
19. Last set of clips until the weekend... Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Georgia / Alabama / Louisiana - September 1994 Atlanta, Macon, Columbus (GA), Birmingham, Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Chuck.
20. That's probably all I have, but I'll keep looking - my grandmother moved upstate in 1994, and going forward, there's more Albany than any place else...
21. I have the one I've posted from WBRZ in 1994 - I suspect I also have a WAFB from the same trip (different tape, though), and just ran across the WBTR/19 "Baton Rouge Today" open. I have some New Orleans from the early 90s somewhere... Also, I'm beginning to wonder - did I do any work in 1994??? Jim
22. Northeast US, October 1994 Sorry for the heavy WNBC rotation, but I love that theme. I also found it interesting WCBS was still using the "I Love Chicago" theme for the traffic open... I'm a fan of WBAL's open - to me, at least, it's in the class with WBTV's from the same timeframe. I have more from this trip (some Canada/northern NY, as well as west Tennessee), coming soon! Jim
23.
@compubit I've two questions for you: 1- How did you record TV from a car? 2- When you traveled to the Northeast in 1994, did you visit New England?
Back in the day... 1) I had a Sony VideoWalkman as well as my Super-VHS deck and an 8mm tape deck, and 2) a DC/AC converter (plugs into the cigarette lighter and provides 120V out), and 3) a thing called (as I was originally taught) an aerial, but nowadays it's called an antenna. If you connect them up, you could record stuff off the air! It was amazing! In reality, I just hooked stuff up and recorded - I'd take the 8mm and S-VHS decks, tune them in using the screen on the Video Walkman, then lastly tune the video to record. I learned that you have to be careful with grounding and the antenna to the car, or you end up with white noise (you can see it in some of the videos...) As for Northeast 1994, I don't think so - I have some Burlington, VT, but started in NYC, moved my grandmother to outside of Albany, then did the loop trip up I-87 to Montreal, down through Toronto, and then back to Albany, then headed back to Texas with my mom (thus the Hagerstown/Baltimore, Knoxville & Nashville). I have more, but will have to edit it together once I get it off of tape... Jim
24. Not east, but south... You beat me to the post... Jim
25. Carolinas from September 1994 I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving week! Newscast opens and other clips from the Carolinas in 1994. Please pardon the quality on some of the clips - they were often recorded off-air from my car on this trip... WSPA Noon; WJZY 10pm; WCCB 10pm; WCNC 11pm; WSOC 11pm; WFMY 6pm; WGHP 6pm; WYFF Noon; WLOS Noon; WBTV 5pm; WSOC 5:30pm; WCNC 6pm; WXII 6pm; UNC-TV 6:30pm; WLOS 11pm; WIS 11pm
