Coming tomorrow or Monday...

I plan to add a KXAN open from that timeframe to that newscast (with a fade to black) and will update. I was disappointed that the open was chopped... J

WXIA (Atlanta) September 12, 1994 5:30am - I think this package would translate well into HD... Jim

Here's some 30 year-old goodness from Baltimore. I found this on an old tape and knew I needed to post it... This is my second-oldest newscast I recorded (that I've found so far). The oldest is a mid-summer 10pm from KCEN (it was supposed to be KTVV, but due to interference, the Channel 36 signal dropped from our cable system, as I was recording "a Thursday night of NBC"). At the time WMAR didn't carry the Tonight Show, pre-empted NBC often for Orioles Baseball, and didn't clear parts of the NBC daytime schedule (thank goodness WRC, which I could also receive at the time, did clear the entire schedule - can't miss the game shows!). I do chuckle at Ken Matz struggling through "North American Man Boy Love Association" during the tease... Also, during the 6pm newscast, the 2 logo flies toward the screen to the studio through the hole in the 2. Enjoy! WMAR (Baltimore) August 28, 1987 11:00pm Jim

They had no real emphasis to change - as a 180s/190s ranked market with 1 commercial and 1 PBS station (a satellite out of Richmond, I believe). Everything else was out of market on cable; not bad for a one-station college town (reminds me of Bryan/College Station during the mid 80s...). Jim

Just wait until I post the KKTM newscast open and close... I've never seen a plywood set - where you can see the grain of the plywood... (That one may have to go onto YouTube...)

Last thing from Phoenix for a while - I think I've gotten everything I can for the near term... (I'm also on a business trip for a week, so I'll be posting pre-uploaded content through early next week...) KPHO April 1994 - Fresh News! Jim

Now for a little Atlanta 1994: WAGA, WGNX & WXIA IMHO, that WXIA package would do well in HD... (especially with the Serifed fonts) Jim

I chose Vimeo for several reason - mostly, I have better control over the content (quality, access, etc.). I've seen too many cases of entire histories of newscasts gone when someone gets kicked out of YouTube over content. Plus, I'm fed up with the ads all over YouTube. I'm paying for the hosting, so I can better manage the content. If a question is raised, I can address it, rather than having a flat-out ban. It's content I can control (in that it's stuff I recorded or was recorded specifically for me), and I feel that Vimeo provides the best option for my needs. Plus Vimeo flies a but under the radar, whereas YouTube is more "in your face". I'm not trying to monetize anything - just want to make the content available to fellow enthusiasts. (Plus if I dumped everything at once, there'd be a giant productivity loss from y'all!) Jim

I meant sales - too late on a Saturday night... I thought that some of the new rules required the sales staffs to be fully separate. Jim

More KNAZ... I do have the full 7pm 12News Sunday newscast - will have to wait until I have more storage on Vimeo (next week, as I've already nearly hit my limit of this week's content uploaded...). KNAZ May 1992 Open & "KNAZ - The Place to Be" Promo... Jim

I believe I have Fresh News for KPHO and KNXV early ABC, and possibly transitional KSAZ. I'm still digging. Unfortunately getting stuff off of tape is a real-time activity... (Though I usually start the playback/recording process and go do something else...) Plus I royally suck at labeling my tapes... And I have hundreds of tapes to go through... I believe I have the full 12News Sunday 7pm Newscast from 5/3/92 - It's recording right now, and we'll see... Jim

Just found more fun from Phoenix in May 1992, including a theme not in the SouthernMedia-NMSA for KPHO! May 1992 - KTVK, with the "KTVK Can-Can" promo - look for the entire newscast soon. You're correct. American Spirit and Raycom are 2 totally independent entities and each has to negotiate their own carriage agreements (Same for Mission/Nexstar and Sinclair/Cunningham). The "side car" stations may be run out of the other station (for example, the Raycom station provides Master Control and Playout services to the American Spirit station for a fee, provides a newscast for a fee, etc.), but other entities (marketing) are supposed to be completely independent (they may be independent, they may be linked at the hip...). Many times (but not always) the main station (Raycom, Nexstar, Sinclair, etc.) is a Big 4 station (with an easier carriage mandate), and the side-car station (American Spirit, Mission, Cunningham) is an independent/CW/MyNet station (with less of a desire to pay [as much as the bigger station]). Hope this helps. Jim

I didn't say they were all good... Just a "nice" variety from the past... Basically the station was run almost like a radio station that ran almost all syndicated fare. At the time, the 47News rebroadcast was probably the highlight of the broadcast day... J

Much better graphics... And I see that NewsActive3 has posted the KNAZ May 2, 1994 newscast... Hmmm... Out of courtesy to the original "owners" of newscasts, I have no plans to post any newscasts that were traded for (unless they were original off-air specifically for me, and not a copy of a copy...). That being said, if I post something that was generated by someone else, please let me know and I'll take it down... Jim

With all of the focus on Central Arizona, I needed to throw in a few Northern Arizona pieces! (And for the 7 of you who already found the newscasts, they have been "fixed", if you understand what I mean...) Here's the rest of what I have from my trip to the San Francisco Bay Area from July 1992: 3 Newscasts plus a compilation of the remaining "bits". KNTV (San Jose/San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 11:00pm I love this theme - very creative use of the song... KTVU (Oakland/San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 10:00pm The opening graphics were way ahead of their time... KRON (San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 11:00pm The 10pm News (late night repeat) during the "Early Prime" experiment. Remainder Compilation - July 1992 Pardon the video from KSBW - the source video is crappy, but the music comes through and you can see enough to get an idea. Also, catch KICU as its own, separate from KTVU...

As I'm going through stuff on discs and looking for newscasts I know I have (somewhere on tape...), I wish I could go back in time to my early newscast recording self and give myself a few pieces of advice: 1) ,Record the entire newscast - I spent too much time recording the open and close, ignoring the middle... 2) Label the Video Tape right after it's recorded - with details - not just "Detroit" or "Programs"... 3) Put the full date and time and the station on the tape... 4) Keep detailed records in a simple spreadsheet (and occasionally print it out)... I have details in a database that I can no longer open - and can no longer find... Since the last thing printed was in 2006, no telling which computer it was on... (and I no longer have said computer...). Anyway, more stuff coming with the new week... Jim
