  1. 6 News, a local cable news operation in Lawrence, KS, will be shutting down its operations after 45 years. Minnesota cable company Midco is expanding their Midco Sports Network into the market and ending 6 News. Lawrence is technically in the Topeka DMA but receives signals from both Topeka and Kansas City, so both markets cover them equally. A very sad day indeed.

Lawrence is in the Kansas City DMA, even though it's slightly closer to Topeka. When I was a kid, the K.C. stations were crystal clear over the air, and the Topeka stations were not (broadcast pattern favored towns west/north of Topeka).

That's too bad, though. "6 News" was a recorded newscast for many years. Their first live broadcast was the 1988 K.U. National Championship parade.

  2. And if the iPads didn't work what do you make the anchors use? Paper Scripts?

Yes. We have a portable printer too, in case someone needs to print in the field.

  3. trouble/drama at WGCL

    http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/5/9/troubled-times-at-merediths-atlanta-station

Meredith's complete lack of patience at WGCL is annoying. Just when it seems WGCL is showing some signs of life corporate decides to clean house. It doesn't help that (in my opinion) they are showing way too much news. There is no point for a station dead last in the market to air news a 4,5, and 6; especially when powerhouse WSB has news in those same timeslots. Also not helping things is the fact that WGCL's syndication lineup is garbage. 700 club at 9am; infomercial at 1pm; Inside Edition at 7pm; and Insider (soon to be cancelled) at 7:30pm, that's it. Why they don't move some programming (like Hot Bench and Crime Watch Daily) from WPCH to WGCL is beyond me.

As someone who has produced many live stadium/sports-related newscasts, it certainly seems like WGCL didn't plan much in advance. Preparation is key. I write as much as possible in advance, then throw it out the window when the anchors see things happening on location. We have meetings and test sessions with engineers to make sure IFBs, monitors and iPads work.

The anchors are right to be concerned, but they need to speak with management. Don't shame the newsroom.

By the way, we do most of our "live" shows without a field producer.

  4. Reporter Pro-tip: DO NOT call yourself the N-word or imply that you're calling a viewer/potential witness the N-word when trying to get information from said viewer for a story! http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/4/28/seriously-what-the-hell-are-you-thinking

She's gone, although it doesn't sound like she wanted to be at WXIA much longer anyway ("read my blog!").

  5. WTSP in Tampa has hired a new team for its morning newscast:

Rob Finnerty, Courtney Curtis, and Jackie Fernandez

Rob and Jackie both arrive with some baggage at their new home.

I had no idea about Finnerty. I wonder if KCTV failed to find it in the background check before they hired him, but found it after the fact.

  6. FTVLive is reporting that Sinclair and Meredith are interested in buying Tribune's stations, contingent on cap space opening up.

    http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/2/23/are-the-tribune-stations-in-trouble

What companies like Sinclair really want is access to New York (WPIX), Los Angeles (KTLA) and Chicago (WGN)-- mostly WGN.

I warned about it when Liguori started complaining about the stock price (i.e., the investors want their money). Tribune sold real estate. They sold Gracenote. They offered buyouts. Liguori is leaving. Station sales are next. If no company can be formed to buy the whole lot, then Tribune will have to smash itself with a hammer.

  7. Judging by the 10:55 in the corner, I'm going to guess this show ran way under time and nobody noticed because Tribune decided putting computers in the control room instead of actual people was a good idea.

KTXL's templates are weird because the producers don't set a hard "out" time. I think the Tribune animation is supposed to hit at 56:45 on weeknights and 57:45 on Saturday night.

  8. If I was Larry's agent I would send his resume to weedtv.com

"Larry Blunt has the news at 4:20"

I bet he could own the joint

They just have to hash out the details.

I know a great co-anchor, if she could stay out of prison.

  9. Hot spots won't help much. Extra hot spots did almost no good for us or any other TV station during World Series coverage a couple of years ago.

They need to use the satellite space and feed using dedicated lines.
