They try to "lighten things up a bit" weekend mornings, therefore some stuff may come off as downright stupid.

With that said, weekend mornings haven't been the same since Phil Lipoff left the building.

I think Rob Nelson was an amazing talent for a morning show.  But, yes, Phil Lipof is great himself, too.

  2. I know that the WABC street-side studio has multiple layers of thick glass, at least one of which is shatterproof (i.e., bulletproof) as you can see from the photos.  But it does present risks.

Certainly could have been a different situation were Sam or Lee out on that sidewalk doing a weather live shot.

If I were the technical director I might have thrown to an extended commercial break and relocated the anchors to the upstairs newsroom to continue the broadcast from there.  But I have no doubt WABC has their own contingency plans in place.  The entire ABC building has on-site security, so they could have deployed multiple security officers to stand out on the sidewalk while the broadcast continued from the studio until the police arrived.

Seems that the longer headlines tease is in favor of shorter, tighter and music-less teases before commercial breaks.

Also, the A block stretching to about 18 minutes.

Could be a savvy ratings play by postponing the first commercial break.

Nice open,  but the whole thing is 2 minutes and a half......a little too long if you ask me.

We could always make it a bit longer:

From ABC News World Headquarters at the Barbara Walters Building on Peter Jennings Way in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir!

Here is the send off they did for Tim during Friday’s 5pm broadcast. Really nice celebration of an Eyewitness News legend!

Great sendoff. Tim really represented the gravitas, authority, and trust of EWN.  He's been one of the reasons WABC remains the number one station in the nation.

Now, lest we forget the extent to which Tim really has been around the block, just two years ago Tim was punched in the face while covering a story!

But does GMA3: What You Need To Know remain after the pandemic or will it be replaced by a new program or just turn over the 2:00 p.m. hour to affiliates with General Hospital moving to the 1:00 p.m. feed?

Like what is ABC's plan once the pandemic is over?

I know it's semantics, but no one knows when the pandemic is going to be "over."  I don't think there's going to be a date on which people say "okay, we've won, back to normal."  There will come a time when a vaccine is widely distributed, deaths and hospitalizations decrease, and the story is no longer the story of the day. But that will happen gradually.

As has been mentioned, ABC has already begun positioning it to be a general news hour that doesn't rely on COVID coverage. I'm sure the program will continue as long as ABC is satisfied with its ratings or until they come up with a better idea.

When Mike Marza was brought on wasn’t he “anchor/reporter”? I’d be pretty shocked if he wasn’t given some sort of more permanent anchor role now that a spot is open

Yup, he was. And it's the role he's still been filling thus far.  Initially reporting during the week and on the anchor desk only to fill in.  Now reporting during the week and anchoring the weekend broadcast.

It's historically true that the Anchor/Reporter role is for WABC's weekend anchors. That said, easy to forget that Shirleen Allicot was also hired for an Anchor/Reporter role.  Initially she anchored the noon broadcast and reported for the 4/5/6.  Her role of course has since changed.

With GMA3:SS&K on hiatus, Sara has been guest co-hosting for almost two weeks now. With Whoopi, Joy, and now Meghan all working from home, it has just been Sunny and Sara in-studio. Didn’t realize how much I missed having Sara on this show. She is a voice of reason and not a predictable politically biased personality like the others. Kinda hoping she comes back permanently. Also haven’t seen Ana in a few Fridays.

    Ana appeared today:

  9. I think people are confusing pointing out untruthful statements with open disdain.

If an elected leader makes a statement that is contradicted by facts or by reporting, then it's a journalist's obligation to hold them accountable and say so.

There was a period of time during and after the 2016 election when news outlets went out of their way to highlight "all sides" or "all points of view," even when one of them was clearly misleading or not supported by facts.  We are starting to see more and more outlets, including CNN and others, be more proactive in speaking truth to power, which is why you see anchors being more aggressive in noting fact vs. fiction.

I think Ana lives in Florida and flies in for Friday shows.  Could be that she doesn't want to fly and they don't want to send a camera crew to her.

Completely irresponsible but that’s what happens when you put Oprah’s bff on television and ask her to portray a journalist.

First, the CBS producers who posted the clip of that line of questioning should have known better.  It was a small line of questioning, part of a much larger interview about Bryant and his life, and without context reduced an otherwise-good interview to a single moment.  Bryant was accused of sexual assault, and in this Me Too era, a neutral look-back on his life would be incomplete without at least an acknowledgement.  In the scope of the entire interview, that's all it was.  But CBS chose to go for click bate, and it blew up in their face.

Second, I expect you'd know better than to post something so dismissive.  Gayle worked as a reporter and anchor at WUSA, WJZ, WDAF, and WFSB, long before joining CBS.  She's qualified.

  12. Matt Gutman has been suspended by ABC News for erroneous reporting during the live helicopter crash special report.  He initially reported all four of the Bryant children were killed in the crash; he later issued a correction on air.

Interesting to note that Nightline is using the WNT desk.  I can only speak for tonight's broadcast, though.  I don't know if this is just tonight or if they have been doing this for a while.

Consistent with rumblings that the entire floor is undergoing major construction.
