  1. In most cases, that would be good to have a 3 hour delayed Nightly News at 10:00. If there is really big news, they could have a special live one produced at 10:00 PT (1:00 ET). If local news started at 10:30 pm (9:30 pm CT) or 10:35 pm (9:35 pm CT), they could have an hour-long late news or some other special if the 11:00 pm (10:00 pm CT) half hour stayed with affiliates. Otherwise, late night shows starting at 11:05 pm (10:05 pm CT)? (My preference would be 1 hour with affiliates, from 10:35 to 11:35, for hour-long late newscasts or news/sports shows or the like).
  2. It's in a tiny market, but Gray has fired KNOP's News Director, Melanie Standiford, for actively promoting pro-life (or anti-abortion) causes. It's become quite controversial (and understandably so, in an extremely conservative area).
  3. I can see this becoming the large-market Gray package for the bigger stations, say up to DMA 50 to 60. However, I think the honeycomb package will be the default small-market package (i.e., below 100). The mid-market stations could go either way. Stations like WBTV, WBRC, WOIO and WVUE I could see getting something like this.
  4. Local News Live seems to have changed to a "hybrid" of the Honeycomb and the old Meredith graphics. I suspect the larger market stations will get future graphics similar to the existing Meredith set.
  5. WMBB has gone full circle though, reuniting with most of its old siblings.
  6. As smaller stations, I could see all, or almost all, the ex-Quincy stations getting the "honeycomb" package, which seems to be the smaller market package.
  7. Excellent choice by KWCH. They needed to get rid of the Media General-era logo, which made them look like a Nexstar station.
  8. Fayetteville is an odd one, since there are no Gray stations in NW Arkansas, and the prospects aren't great of acquiring one - the most likely scenario I can see is that Tegna and Standard collapse, then acquires Hearst, leaving Gray with the leftovers.

When it comes to CBS affiliates beyond the 14 O&O markets, the number of markets (excluding same-market satellites) owned or controlled by company: Gray - 55 Nexstar - 43 Sinclair - 23 Tegna - 15 Scripps - 11 Allen - 5 NP&G - 5 Morgan Murphy - 4 Others - 35 (none with more than three each) Can they really blackmail them that much?
  10. It's market 204 I believe, so we can't hold them to the same standard. Any old Gray set could find its way up there to be reused.
  11. Atlanta isn't the only market Gray is greatly expanding in. WHNS Greenville (SC) is getting a 35% expansion in its local coverage and adding at least 10% to its workforce.

If any network may want to be willing to go for a prime time newscast, I think it would be CBS since they are usually a distant third in ratings in the early evenings - maybe a 10 pm (or 9 pm CT) national news there (with the 6:30/5:30 pm timeslot yielded to an hour-long local newscast) would be able to break from the shadow of NBC Nightly News and World News Tonight.

  14. In the case of Grand Junction, VHF is probably better due to the mountainous territory and numerous communities between the ridges. Twin Falls would be better on UHF, since the Snake River valley is all they serve.

  17. Someone at a smaller Gray station could be in for a promotion there? Maybe hire from, say, WCAX?
  18. I figured the ex-Quincy stations would be next. As far as the ex-Meredith stations, they are similar enough that I suspect they will be retained until another Gray package comes along later.
  19. It starts to make me wonder if CBS will put some of their stations on the sale block.
  20. I am noticing that Local News Live is also covering with local stations in non-Gray markets as well. For the most part, it seems either Hearst-owned stations or CBS O&O's that they have been working with, which may be because those are who Gray has the best relations with. (Then again, Hearst and Gray compete directly in 10 markets...)
  21. I noticed Macon was one of those markets - the one Georgia market without a Gray station, and unless a trade is coming (i.e. swap with Tegna for WMAZ), there is no realistic plan to get into that market.

  24. There had been times in the past even a 30% (high) risk wouldn't keep TWC live.
  25. Likely would be a WGCL satellite for the NW corner of the market. (If Gray acquired a station in Chattanooga such as WRCB, they could shoehorn it on there too...)
