We've lost two big veterans in New Orleans news. Last week, it was former WWL forecaster/announcer Don Westbrook. Today, we all learned that Andre Trevigne, formerly of WWL-TV, WGNO, WWL Radio and WRNO-FM died yesterday at a NOLA-area hospice. She was 65.

That leaves Eric Paulsen as the only surviving member left of the original "Eyewitness Morning News" when it debuted on 4WWL-TV in the 70s.

Surprised no one mentioned this but KABB is launching a midday newscast on September 14, which I believe would be the first one on any of Sinclair's current Fox stations. The half-hour broadcast will air Monday through Fridays at 11:00 a.m., and will be anchored by Ernie Zuniga, Jessica Henry with Shaun Stevens as the program's meteorologist (all three currently serve as the team for KABB's weekday morning newscast Fox News First). Interesting that they chose to add a newscast in that timeslot instead of placing one at 4:00 or 5:30 p.m.

    KABB should've added news at 5:30 p.m.
  3. My mock schedule on weekdays:

4:00-5:00 AM: NBC News - Early Today

    5:00-5:30 AM: First Look

    5:30-6:00 AM: Way Too Early

    6:00-9:00 AM: Morning Joe

    9:00 AM-12:00 PM: MSNBC LIVE

    12:00-1:00 PM: Andrea Mitchell Reports

    1:00-5:00 PM: MSNBC LIVE

    5:00-6:00 PM: Chuck Todd's un-named show

    6:00-7:00 PM: MSNBC LIVE

7:00-8:00 PM: Hardball with Chris Matthews

8:00-9:00 PM: MSNBC LIVE or The News with Brian Williams

9:00-10:00 PM: The Rachel Maddow Show

    10:00 PM-12:00 AM: MSNBC LIVE

12:00-1:00 AM: The Rachel Maddow Show (repeat)

1:00-3:00 AM: MSNBC LIVE (10 and 11pm hours repeat)

3:00-4:00 AM: Hardball with Chris Matthews (repeat)

Early Today replaces the Rachel Maddow repeat at 4am

First Look and Way Too Early remains the same.

    Morning Joe remains the same.

MSNBC LIVE from 9am-12pm replaces The Rundown (Jose Diaz-Balart should focus on Noticiero Telemundo instead) and NewsNation (Tamron Hall should just stick to doing Today).

Andrew Mitchell Reports remain as is.

MSNBC LIVE from 1-3pm remains as is with Thomas Roberts.

MSNBC LIVE from 3-5pm replaces the canceled "The Cycle" and "NOW with Alex Wagner" and would be anchored by exile anchor Brian Williams.

Chuck Todd's show takes over the 5pm slot from "The Ed Show."

MSNBC LIVE at 6pm resumes with another anchor and replaces the stupid Al Sharpton, PoliticsNation show (why is he still on MSNBC? He's un-trusted and doesn't even pay his taxes).

7pm is still the timeslot to do some "Hardball with Chris Matthews."

Get out Chris Hayes, because at 8pm... "The News with Brian Williams" makes a return.

You're lucky Rachel Maddow that your show remains at 9pm.

MSNBC LIVE from 10pm-12am replaces "The Last Word" and Rachel Maddow repeat from Mondays-Thursdays and "Lockup" on Fridays.

The repeat for Rachel Maddow remains at 12am.

The 10 and 11pm hours of MSNBC LIVE repeat from 1-3am, replacing The Last Word and All In.

Hardball repeats from 3-4am, an hour later than what MSNBC currently shows at 2am.

My point... more news, throughout the day AND night.

  4.

Why don't ABC just cancel The View and get it over with, the show is getting old and it's about time the network needs to start something new and fresh.

And once those contracts are over, ABC affiliates can then take over and put more local news or put more syndicated programming in it.
  5.

WJBK is very likely the highest rated FOX station in the country... Selling it would be plain stupid.

Really? I've always though WTVT was the highest-rated FOX station (in terms of O&O's) in the country, considering that WTVT is #1 in most, if not all, news timeslots.
  6.

Then what's the point of keeping WWJ if they aren't going to invest in a news department for it?

The radio sister... Newsradio 950 WWJ and sports station 97.1 The Ticket, which is sometimes #1 in Detroit radio ratings.

We have the official launch date coming from WEVV CBS (44.1) & FOX (44.2), 44News will be on the air Monday, August 3rd.

I guess the station never confirmed my report, but that's what happens. I reported this for a week now and its now confirmed. I'm so good at this.

A journalistic victory for my "Changing Newscasts Blog."

  8.

Just 5 news organizations (WBTV, WSOC, WCNC, WCCB and WJZY) but on 6 commercial stations, 7 if you count the WBTV news from 7-9 am and 8-9 pm on Bounce 3.2. I agree, it's a bit much. But WCCB wasn't giving up on its news just because they lost the Fox affiliation.

So its 5 organizations, 6 stations if you count TWC News North Carolina, 7 for WBTV News on Bounce TV, 8 for WSOC's Eyewitness News on WAXN.

That's as equal as the amount of local news organizations we have here in South Florida (WFOR, WTVJ, WSVN, WPLG, WGEN, WLTV/WAMI, WJAN/WFUN, WSCV)

  9.

This is not unique to Scripps, but they want to do more with less. The problem is one can only do less with less. The List, Right This Minute, etc., is nothing more than America's Funniest Home Videos packaged as news. It looks cheap. It is cheap. It carries over to some of the real news product too. People are still buying the ad space, though.

As long as they don't get rid of Right This Minute, I'm fine with that. I love that show.
  10.

KYW needs a to do a complete overhaul and they need to invest in the stations. Their product has been lacking for a few years now. I may get a big backlash from this but I think the Alycia Lane and Larry Mendte saga/incident, whatever you want to call it, messed up the channels reputation a bit and leaving the viewers with a bad taste in their mouths . They were on top at one point but now look at them. CBS in general needs to do some work on about all of their stations (WFOR, WCBS, KCBS, KTVT, etc.). I do agree that they need to hire at least 3 male anchors an another female anchor. A rebrand of their sports department and another male weathercaster for weekend mornings. Here's my take below:

Mornings: Erika von Tiehl and Male-co anchor

Noon: Pat Ciarrocchi and Male co-anchor (from the mornings)

Evenings should be broken up into 2 teams

5 p.m. and 11 p.m.: Ukee Washington and Jessica Dean

    6 p.m. and 10 p.m.: Natasha Brown and Male co-anchor

    Weekend Mornings : Nicole Brewer

Weekend Evenings: Diana Rocco (or new female anchor) and Male co-anchor

If they do this and stick with the teams for more than 3 years to show stability, then they might have a shot. Heck add a 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. newscast but make it a bit lighter and try to interact with viewers.

I like this lineup, but I think Ukee and Jessica should do 6 and 11 p.m. while Natasha and some male anchor does 5 and 10 p.m.
  11.

Y'all might want to check in on the news at nine tonight. Steve Sanders was off at midday, filling in right now at 4 and 5, so I'd assume he'll pop up on his old stomping grounds later on. I forget, has he anchored the 9 o'clock show since he left? I know he's done a few reports in-studio.

I don't think he has. Steve used to do the midday show for a long time before leaving for the news at 9, but then returned to the midday show once Mark Supplesa came to WGN TV.
  12.

Since Scripps now has ABC affiliates all around Arizona, they might as well launch AZCN (Arizona Cable News) without any trace of "The NOW" seeing as how much "The NOW" sucks because of it dragging down most of the Scripps stations that have it.

Everybody except KECY 9.2 in Yuma, AZ-El Centro, CA, in which its owned by News-Press and Gazette Company.
  13.

I wonder why there no NOW in Baltimore?

1.) WMAR 2 is one of Scripps' worst-performing stations.

2.) WMAR 2 is the only Scripps station that doesn't produce news on Saturdays.

3.) I believe WMAR 2 is the only news-produced Scripps station that doesn't air midday news.

4.) WMAR 2 is one of ABC's weakest stations.

I can go on and on and on as to how bad WMAR 2 has been.

  14.

Whenever I wake up on a Saturday morning and I want to watch local news, I can't because it ends at 7am and I am not awake for that. On Sundays, for example, Action News is on from 6-8AM and also throughout the morning so I can watch.

    But Action News is on from 5:30-8:00 and 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00-8:00 and 9:00-10:30 a.m. + 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Eyewitness News is 5:00-7:00 a.m. Saturdays and 6:00-9:00 a.m. Sundays.

    NBC 10 News is 5:00-7:00 and 9:00-10:00 a.m. Saturdays and 5:30-8:00 and 9:00-10:30 a.m. Sundays.

    FOX 29 Weekend is 8:00-10:00 a.m. Saturdays and 8:00-9:00 a.m. Sundays.

69 News Sunrise is Saturdays from 7:00-9:00 a.m.

So I don't get it as to what you mean by "can't watch local news because it ends at 7:00 a.m."? In Philly, there are plenty of options after 7:00 a.m. on both Saturdays and Sundays.

    WABC-TV LAYS OFF 36; 59 MORE CUTS EXPECTED Published: April 12, 1986

    Correction Appended

In the latest round of continuing staff cutbacks at Capital Cities/ABC, 36 employees were laid off yesterday by WABC-TV, the network-owned station in New York. At least 95 positions will be eliminated by the end of the year, station officials said.

No on-air reporters were among those released by the station, but several news writers and producers were laid off, according to a station official who asked not to be identified.

Bill Fyffe, vice president and general manager of WABC-TV, said that the staff reductions were based on a ''detailed study of the station's operations and procedures.''

WABC-TV employs about 400 people. Of the 95 positions to be eliminated, 21 are jobs currently open that will not be filled, 38 are engineers and desk assistants who will be transferred to vacation relief duty and 36 are staff members who were laid off.

The layoffs affected at least three other Capital Cities/ABC stations -all of them stations that belonged to ABC rather than to Capital Cities before the merger of the two companies was completed this year.

At KABC-TV in Los Angeles, as many as 80 positions were expected to be eliminated. John Sevarino, the station president, would not comment.

At Chicago's ABC station, WLS, 36 employees were laid off yesterday and 36 positions are expected to be eliminated by the end of the year. Cutbacks were also announced at KGO, the ABC television station in San Francisco.

  16. Does this mean the return of Eyewitness News at Noon full time?

I've said this before but Pat is severely underused. There were several times this week that Chris anchored solo at 5, 6, 10, and 11. One word: unbearable!!

Eyewitness News at Noon returns full time on Monday. Check my blog, The Changing Newscasts Blog, for details.

    Longtime lurker, first time poster...

I'm long gone from Oklahoma, but I grew up just outside OKC watching Channel 4 (WKY/KTVY/KFOR). Bob Barry Sr. or Jr. held the sports director's chair there for 49 years. As mentioned in a column in Friday's Oklahoman, the station has changed call letters more than it has changed sports directors. They were truly legendary in that market.

Relationships are tight, even among long-time competitors. Brothers Kelly (KWTV) and Kevin Ogle (KFOR) are prime-time anchors on competing stations. Their father, Jack, was an anchor on WKY (now KFOR) in the 1960's and 70's. Kevin's daughter Abigail is a morning anchor on KOCO.

KOCO is really stepping up to the plate by staffing the KFOR newsroom on Friday. This is a big loss to the market and to the community.

It's gonna be hard to deliver Sports on KFOR without a Barry delivering it anymore.
