It was 20 years ago today that Baltimore mourns the loss of one of the most popular anchors in B-Town, were talking about the late great Al Sanders. Al worked at WJZ from 1972 til' his

death in 1995 of lung cancer. Al paired with his friend and colleague the late Jerry Turner from 1977 til' Jerry's death on New Year's Eve of 1987. Today we at TVNT honor Al Sanders for

all his dedication and loyalty to television news and his contributions to the city of Baltimore.

    Godspeed Al.

    Amen.
  2.

Can Media General run a cleaner slate than Scripps though?

I agree though WTVF is in a terrible position - it is regionally isolated from most of Scripps' portfolio AND a CBS affiliate for a company that has never had good relations with that network. Nashville is weird with so many "black sheep" stations with their owners due to all these acquisitions.

Scripps didn't even own any CBS stations prior to the merger with Journal, other than KENS 5, in which it was sold quickly to Belo in 1997.

As we reported not lone ago, WEVV is relaunching its news department and now the station has hired new anchors for its evening newscasts.

    • Amanda Decker, Formerly at INN in Little Rock, AK.
    • Chris Cerenelli, Formerly at WTVF/Nashville, TN.
    • Chad Evans, the new chief meteorologist - Evans comes from WLFI/Lafayette, LA.
    • And Andrew Keesee, the new sports Director - Keesee comes from KWES/Midland, TX

There will be more hires of new reporters/anchors and all the others in the coming weeks and months.

    Lafayette, IN; not LA.

It looks like WEVV 44 is taking over the former WTVW 7's building.

  4. Btw, WVTM 13 has added a 6:30 p.m. weeknight newscast to replace Alabama TONIGHT and moved its Sunday 10:00 a.m. hour to 9:00 a.m.

WIAT 42 has added a weekend morning newscast for the first time and their first new newscast under Media General ownership.

Other than that, ABC 33/40 took away the Good Morning Alabama name for the ABC 33/40 Morning News, WVUA 23 is still kinda crap with just 3 newscasts at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. and WBRC 6 is just... KING in Central Alabama. I just wish WBRC 6 had weekend early evening newscasts as well.

ABC22/FOX 45 Morning anchor Megan Mongillo was off the air for a while after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Mongillo says she's winning the battle of

cancer, She'll be back on the air on Monday.

And lastly, legendary WSB anchor Monica Kaufman-Pearson has been diagnosed with liver cancer. Pearson says doctors removed part of her liver and she's

    doing well.

    http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/monica-pearson-diagnosed-liver-cancer/nkz6c/#__federated=1

TVNT asks that you keep these two talented anchors in your prayers, ans wish them well in their recovery.

Prayers to Mongillo's family and especially to Kaufman-Pearson's family, especially since she is a legend in Atlanta and in the news business.

I betcha that, in a few weeks, it will be quietly renamed "7 Action News at 4." Maybe it happens in the next week, what with the ramp-up of May sweeps.

With the standard WXYZ graphics and everything. Then The NOW will be history, at least in Detroit. And then the start of the end of the ill-fated show.
  7.

The owners are very religious (name is "Marantha Broadcasting Company" which if you don't know is a rough translation of "Come, O Lord") so I bet that might dictate some of what they air. On the weekends they definitely air a lot of religious shows.

At 8 PM every night they show Dr. Phil, and 9 PM Steve Harvey. But the Dr. Phil episode they air at 8 PM is from the previous day, almost like it's a 2nd run?? Possibly because a Philly station also airs Dr. Phil? And this week's Steve Harvey episodes (just checked) are from 2 weeks ago. Odd.

I often thought it would be a neat idea for them to branch out into original, local programming - like LOCAL dramas or comedies, starring local people, about local things. I think it would be interesting, especially since there are so many artsy-type programs (at Muhlenburg College or Moravian College, for instance). Probably expensive though.

They have Steve Harvey from 2 weeks ago because WCAU 10 carries the first-run episodes. I think KYW 3 carries first-run of Dr. Phil, but I might be wrong.
  8.

As the morning show that have once aired in The CW Plus and Soul of the South Network, it's really surprising.

Not surprising to me. They have been falling in the ratings for years now and has never be the same show, since the original cast left with Andrea, Ron, Dao, Mitch, Kia, etc.
  9.

And, another small nugget from the Twin Cities market. KMSP is testing a news news/talk show called

Friday nights @ 9:30pm. The link is to the first episode but, the best way I can describe it is basically a news/talk radio show adapted to TV. It's "hosted" by two talk radio hosts who discuss/debate the weeks "big" news stories. The EP appears on screen acting as a moderator of sorts telling them when to move on and giving them a new discussion topic. I believe it's getting a six episode test. Not horribly surprising as KMSP has been testing all sorts of half-hour "newsy" programs over the last year from "The Reporters" to "Game Day" to "The Goods" and now "Enough Said".

Wouldn't be surprised if more viewers tune to KSTC at 9pm or if that broadcast becomes #1 because of this program.
  10.

12.2 is branded as "K-JAC NBC," a nod to the longtime callsign of the market's former NBC affiliate, S!nclair Fox affiliate KBTV/4.

If I'm not mistaken, ALL of KBMT's newscasts are simulcast on 12.1 and 12.2.

    * K-JAC: Your NBC.

And you are mistaken. KBMT 12.2 only simulcasts the morning newscast. It also airs exclusive newscasts at 12:00 Noon, 4:00 and 6:30 p.m., while the rest (5:00, 6:00, 10:00 p.m. and weekend newscasts) are only seen on KBMT 12.1.

  11.

Anchor changes coming to WTVJ NBC 6 next week.

    • Jawan Strader will join Jackie Nespral at 5, 6 & 11pm weeknights - Starting Wednesday
    • Adam Kuperstein will join Trina Robinson at 5:30pm and anchor sports at 11pm weeknights - Starting Wednesday
    • Eric Harryman will join Pan Giganti from 4:40-7am and Trina at 11am weekdays - Starting Tuesday

    http://www.adweek.com/tvspy/wtvj-plays-the-anchor-shuffle/145987

I like Jawan and the Kup. I wonder how Eric is like, coming from Sacramento; he's actually making a market jump. Good luck to Eric and I'll see how he does here in the morning when I get a chance to watch him. But it's about time Jawan moved to evenings while the Kup goes back part-time to sports.

  12.

KMBC/Kansas City is moving morning anchor Kris Ketz back to evenings, making him the lead anchor. Len Jennings will do sports (can't imagine this is his decision). Matt Flener will take over as primary morning anchor.

Kris used to do 5pm news for KMBC in the late 90s into the 2000s. Len used to do sports for WFTX 4 before moving to WZVN 7 as news anchor.
  13.

And Panama City still lacks a 9pm newscast of any kind.

WJHG could've done so because it offers The CW on 7.2 and so does WECP with MyNetwork TV on 18.2. Instead, they rather have syndicated programming instead during those timeslots.
  14.

Anyway, a few "happenings" of note here in the Twin Cities:

    • WCCO launched a 9am newscast, WCCO Mid-Morning, this past Monday. The format is mostly "fluff" and roundtable discussion of the days "talkers" coupled with the days headlines and weather. It's hosted by Jason DeRusha and Kylie Bearse. And, they will be joined by 2 members of WCCO's on-air staff rotating daily. WCCO Mid-Morning replaces The Queen Latifah Show which ceased airing new episodes earlier in March. I wouldn't be shocked if the concept expands to other CBS O&O's and WCCO is being used as the test bed.
    • KMSP will reportedly launch a 10am "talk show" hosted by the returning Jason Matheson. It will reportedly be focused on "national talkers" and "pop culture." I'm guessing it might be similar to his morning radio show. But, I'm curious if it will be live or taped given his radio show ends at 9am.
    • Finally, KSTP is shortening it's hour-long 10pm newscast to the traditional 35 minute length starting April 13th. This will allow them to air Jimmy Kimmel Live at it's scheduled 10:35pm start time. The cynic in me can't help but think that ABC gave them some more "prodding" given they just started a new affiliation agreement with KSTP at the beginning of the year.

Notice the mistakes. You said 9pm and 10pm.

And KSTP shortening its hour-long 10:00 p.m. weeknight newscast? Ah shucks. That was probably the best thing of KSTP's 10pm news, considering it was an hour-long, compared to WCCO, KMSP and KARE.

  15.

An Erie station has less than that. That station is WSEE (Lilly Broadcasting). Their weekday newscasts run from 6-7am, 12-12:30pm, 6-6:30pm, and 11-11:35pm. WICU's weekend newscast is Weekends Now which is on both WICU and WSEE because they are sister stations. WSEE used to be number one, not anymore.

Doesn't WSEE also air a 10:00 p.m. newscast for The CW on WSEE-DT2?
