I'm not entirely sure. Air Comfort Solutions, the company, is a big spender in advertising. It could be that there was another suitor willing to pay more, so a name change may be on the horizon again. For now, it's just Chopper 4 again.

I'm no longer there, so I can't say for certain.

As a side note, Air Comfort Solutions Chooper 4 was a mouthful and I was never a fan of that brand.

Given that they have former OU Quarterback Jason White and of course, Lord Gary England that makes logical sense for ACS to have the kind of money needed to spend the advertising dollars and money needed to sponsor a multitude of things including the Chopper.

When Air Comfort Solutions was sponosring KFOR's chopper it would've been a lot easier to say "ACS Chopper 4" instead of "Air Comfort Solutions Chopper 4" like what they did but that's just me.

Can you elaborate? Just out of curiosity. I'm not familiar with the market.

He's talking about the affiliation switch involving WRAL and WNCN that took place on this date 4 years ago.

That's as far as I can elaborate for you.

Why did they kill the licensing agreement?

My guess is that Air Comfort Solutions didn't want to renew the contract when it was up. Who knows what went on behind the scenes (maybe @Al-SA-TX might have an answer as to why ACS didn't renew the deal with KFOR for Chopper 4 but I could be wrong)

KWTV's is actually known as SkyNews 9HD or as Bob Mills SkyNews 9HD and KOTV's is known as Osage SkyNews 6HD. And KFOR's is known as Air Comfort Solutions Chopper 4.

Actually KFOR's chopper is no longer called Air Comfort Solutions Chopper 4 (or ACS Chopper 4 for short) it's now just Chopper 4.

He sold off 20th Century Fox, FX, and all that other stuff because he decided the streaming wars were one hurdle too many for him to clear. He's old and didn't seem to trust his kids to take the reins of 21CF as it was constituted.

And, quite frankly, I think he saw that his trashy ethos didn't really jibe with the tone set by the likes of Netflix. From what I could tell, 20th and FX were low on his priority list anyway.

I imagine the RSNs were low on the priority list. Which even if it was the case do you think the Murdoch's would've been a lot better off hanging on to the RSNs or do you think the Murdoch's made the right call by selling.

To me the way I see it, the only reason why a lot of providers and MVPDs didn't drop the RSNs when it was owned by Murdoch was because Murdoch had a lot of clout in his pocket to ensure that the RSNs wouldn't go dark, now the RSNs are owned by Sinclair it just seems as if the RSNs are missing that negotiating clout they once had under Murdoch.

Overall I think given the way the RSNs were sold for, the Murdoch's should've held on to the RSNs.

From what I remember, an earlier iteration of the Disney-Fox deal didn't include the RSNs, but Disney wanted them and they were added to the deal, adding about $22 billion to its value. I think a lot of the reason they went to Disney and were subsequently spun off was because Murdoch didn't want to lower the amount of Disney holdings he would receive, since the deal was originally all-stock and I believe he opted to take stock and not cash when the cash component was added.

The Disney-Fox deal in general seems to have broken media.

And not just broken the media as we know it but it has broken the current RSN business model as well.

I think Murdoch saw something in the media industry and he decided to exit the business, what exactly Rupert saw that made him leave the business? Who knows what he saw.

Based on what's transpired with the Fox RSNs since Sinclair took over, I'm now surprised that they were able to renew with AT&T, which also included the local stations. I also wonder whether Sinclair will lower the asking price for the RSNs at some point or possible wait until the contract for the local stations comes up for renewal. If you want to point fingers:

    • Fox for selling the RSNs in the first place
    • DOJ for making Disney sell the RSNs instead of allowing them to become part of ESPN
    • Sinclair for being completely stubborn

I actually don't fault Fox for actually selling the RSNs in the first place, I think Rupert Murdoch saw the RSNs as a declining business with all the cord-cutting and he wanted to cut their losses before his company would suffer any real consequences that would lead to Bankruptcy (more on that in this post)

The latter 2 I truly believe that are to blame I think a lot of it is on the Justice Department for going after the RSNs instead of the overlap between the Disney and Fox film assets (like what they should have done as I think there were a lot more antitrust issues related to that than the RSNs) and Sinclair gets some of the blame for their stubborness and of course, Chris Ripley's ignorance of the overall business.

  8. 4 hours ago, channel2 said:

Chris Ripley has, time and time again, demonstrated this company's delusions of grandeur and utter lack of any knowledge of its place in the media landscape, or the landscape itself, and this strikes me as no different.

To hear it from Sinclair, you'd think they were a cross between the modern Disney and '90s Time Warner.

Those delusions and blantant ignorance showed up on the day Sinclair announced they were going to buy the RSNs from Disney as seen here:

Skip to about 2:11 when CNBC's Sara Einsen asked Ripley a question about how cord cutting is affecting the RSN business and I won't say what Ripley's response was other than just blantant ignorance.

Murdoch is just sitting back enjoying this clownshow that is Sinclair.

I should add as well that Sinclair's stock price at that time  was closer to 60 dollars (was over that when it was announced) now they're down over 50 percent in the last 9 months (30 percent since Ripley's igornant comments to Sara Einsen on CNBC) and quite frankly as much as I hate to say it, Sinclair deserves it, and Chris Ripley and the folks in Hunt Valley need to know that their blantant ignorance is going to lead them straight into bankruptcy and if they think that it's going to end pretty I have bad news for them; it's not.

YouTube TV announced they are dropping the FSN's on February 29th. Comcast could also be the next TV provider to drop them in June. Still no sign of the networks rebranding the name anytime soon. This is getting interesting.

    FB_IMG_1582832944967.jpg

This cannot be a great sign at all but at the same time I'm not surprised as Chris Ripley (like he did in the Tribune deal) continues to show blantant ignorance to anybody questioning him about anything to do with things related to cord-cutting and it's impact on the RSNs

This isn’t true. They may be lower on the rollout list, but Scripps is not going to support multiple packages with their hub. The GM can complain all he wants, but there are much bigger stations with much more revenue streams that don’t like the new look and at the end of the day, they are going blue. :).  PIX would be the only station where there could be a “wait and see”

I said I know for certain several of them are due to receive the new graphics soon. I can tell you I’ve been told this *at least* includes the Montana Stations, as well as KOAA. I’ve been told to expect them to launch by the end of summer—so still a while away.

    Because...

The stations I mentioned I’m told have either already been upgraded or are in the process of upgrading to Scripps’ infrastructure. Some of this involves replacing hardware and equipment, which takes time.

As for the entire former Cordillera group, I can tell you there has been no explicit exception granted to allow them to keep their graphics, as was apparently given to the former tribune stations.

I don’t think any station gets a “mandate” to upgrade to the group’s new graphics. It’s understood that they eventually will. They’re a Scripps station now. Scripps doesn’t come go WLEX and say “you must update or else.” Scripps just simply comes to them and says “you’re next on the list. We’ll start getting the systems in place for the new graphics,” just like they do for every other station.

Unless they’ve been given an “exception” a la the former Tribune stations (which I still have my doubts about), do not hold out hopes for WLEX.

They’ll probably get the graphics later than most since they’re a new station in the group and probably have yet to upgrade to the needed systems to support Scripps’ graphics and other systems. It’s possible they are lower on the list to receive these upgrades because Scripps likes what they have and are in no rush to change it, but it will happen eventually.

At this point until we can figure out who's getting exempt from getting the Scripps package and who's not getting that exemption to me this is all hearsay that I'm seeing on this thread.

KING 5 is moving Angela Poe Russell from "Take 5" to "Evening" however the changes don't end there.

Starting next Monday "Take 5" will be replaced in the 4pm slot with a new newscast anchored by Greg Copeland and Jessica Janner Castro

Not entirely sure if "Take 5" will remain on air or if they're just moving to a different timeslot.

  13. Bloomberg is reporting that Sinclair is in talks Bruin Sports (the parent company of Deltatre)

This might be behind the paywall for some of y'all that have reached the limit of articles that you can read per month but I should note that the only RSNs not included in this deal are Marquee and YES, all the former Fox Regional Sports Networks are included in this deal.

Some of the notable clients are the NFL, MLB and (ironically) Fox Sports.

  14. As posted on Discord by @Morphtato Longtime WKY/KTVY Chief Meteorologist Jim Williams passed away last night at the Age of 91.

When I think of Broadcast Meteorology in Oklahoma I think of people like Jim Williams, Gary England, Mike Morgan and Rick Mitchell (when Mitchell was at KOCO)

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family and may he rest in peace.

The Nexstar politics graphics still don't match KFOR.

If that's still an issue then KFOR is going to have to make the time/temp bug small enough to fit in with the Nexstar Political L3rds (either that or do what WGN does and integrate it into the Tribune package)

What a downgrade of a logo for KEYC.   As if the WFAA Tegna-ified logo wasn't bad enough...

I'm not even sure what Gray is thinking here (IF they are even thinking at all)

That and now all of the sudden KEYC is influenced by Tegna. This could very well end up being an epic disaster at KEYC.

Feels like they're trying to tie in a little more with NFL Network and Thursday Night Football.

I'm on the record with the belief FOX is going to try and own the ENTIRE NFL broadcast package rights when they're up in a couple years, so with that in mind, the direction doesn't surprise me.

Given the direction the NFL might be taking when the current TV contract expires that actually does make sense for Fox to have an actual NFL package rather than just a package tailor made for the NFC

I can see the RSNs to continue to use the 2017 Fox Sports graphics until they are no longer available, or switch to the Marquee, YES, or Stadium packages.

Out of the 3 that you mentioned I'm actually partial towards the YES package being used on the other FSNs, we'll just have to wait and see what Sinclair decides to do.

Beyond that there is precedent to former Fox owned RSNs hanging on to the Fox package long past the retirement date (e.g. FSN Northwest, Pittsburgh and Rocky Mountain all kept the 2008 FSN package even after those RSNs became Root Sports) so it's possible that Sinclair may rebrand the RSNs in the Spring and wait until the Fall and then roll out the new package.

  20. 21 hours ago, Spring Rubber said:

Maybe the plan is for Fox to immediately roll out the new graphics to all of their properties and to just give the old graphics over to Sinclair to use on the RSNs for however long they need to use them before Sinclair rebrands the RSNs.

I suspect that at least through April the Sinclair RSNs would probably need the outgoing Fox package.

I suspect that the Sinclair RSNs will roll out a new graphics package on a template based on the Marquee Sports Network graphics, I'm not sure if the FSNs will indeed use that template but that is certainly a possibility here.
