  1. The way KXXV implemented this Graphics package is a step in the right direction. However, it is baby steps but it is going in the right direction.

The music package on the other hand still needs work but at least from what I could tell KXXV is using the better cuts in the package.

Overall I think that if more Scripps stations take this package and improve upon the overall graphics package (i.e. making the fonts more bolder, adding more cuts to the package that should sound newscast appropriate) this won't be as bad as what we initially thought. It's up to the stations at Scripps to decide do they want to implement what KXXV has implemented and even improve on what KXXV did and make it even better or go the WTXL/WFTS route.

WFTS and WTXL could learn a lesson or two from KXXV.  Kind of ridiculous that a station in Tampa Bay didn't implement the graphics as well as a station in Waco.  I'll give WTXL a pass because they are in a smaller market.   But it's clear that WFTS could've and should've done better with implementation.

That's not to say I like these graphics.  I think Scripps should ultimately go back to the drawing board--or give control over graphics back to each station.

Also the announcers as well, WFTS could a learn a thing or two what KXXV did by keeping Max McGill as their announcer.

Certainly WTXL as well, I wonder why they did away with having the VO?

  3. I'd be very interested to see how Hemmer does in that hour, I do wonder if he'll lead the Special Reports and Breaking News coverage for Fox or will that go to somebody else?

Scripps has clearly picked up a wide realm of stations from the merger leftovers.  Getting them on board may be a difficult and expensive task.

Miami seems like the kind of place where a Now/Newsy/EyeOpener newscast would be in play.   It would have to stand out because it's a very crowded market where the Spanish language stations push the "Big 4" into duopoly bait ratings-wise.   The new look would certainly have to be jazzed up a bit, since the blue is such a drab color for a vibrant place like South Florida.

As for WPIX?  They may not be putting a lot of effort there, especially if Nexstar finds a way and succeeds in using their option to own them.

Not to mention there are still some of the Tribune/Nexstar rejects Scripps acquired that are still on the Tribune-related layouts.

It takes longer than what people realized to get the stations assimilated into a new platform and then you have to get new graphics and everything else in order

Scripps is a the perfect example of the sea change that has happened in local broadcasting.

They used to be one of the better groups right up there with Hearst and Post-Newsweek (Graham) and even Gannett before they got broken up.

They began losing their way when they were too cheap for syndicated programming.  There were many takers that benefited from them casting off such "expensive" shows as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!

And this was shortly after Oprah ended her run, opening up many 4pm newscasts across the country (or trying to fill the void with other talkers.  WEWS alone underwent drastic schedule changes that seem to have never been fixed ratings-wise.

The next shift was the rise of the mega-groups.  Sinclair awoke and bought some stations (Four Points), then some more (Newport & Cox cast-offs), and then went on a shopping spree with Barrington, Fisher, and later Allbritton.

At the same time, Media General merged with Young,  Belo merged with Gannett, thus making these groups much larger.  Later LIN merged with Media General.

I bring up Young/Media General because one of their packages (the WATE/WTEN one specifically) looked a lot like the package Scripps introduced the year before, that's just now being phased out.  With the Media General merger, and it's rollout to some of their own legacy stations, you have a now-larger group ripping off a now-smaller one.

On the Scripps end, they ended up getting bigger with the Journal merger, the Cordillera purchase, and now the Nexstar-Tribune and Raycom-Gray castoffs.  And only now, they are updating the look group-wide.

They've fallen far behind the other groups graphics-wise, and seem to not having a good grasp on rolling this out to all of these stations they now own.  Meanwhile, the super-groups like Nexstar and Sinclair make it look easy and seamless as each station is assimilated into the "borg".

Sinclair has updated some of their newer acquisitions multiple times.

Even Gray with their multiple packages makes each market look halfway decent (even if it's not as good as what it replaced.)

Scripps?  They need a lot of work, and it's not just their current graphics package.

I think the biggest problem Scripps has ran into is that they've brought so many stations in almost a year that they've essentially placed the graphics and everything else on the backburner.

Clearly this will cost Scripps in the long haul especially with their development of the news department for WSFL as I don't think the new graphics package will go over too well in South Beach

Have we even heard any more than that one excruciatingly slow cut?

Other than the opens that we've seen (and maybe the weather cuts) that's pretty much it.

Right now if I had an opinion on it I'd say it's not neccesary boring but it's dull.

Once we hear the other cuts I might have a better opinion than what I have right now

Comparatively, Guardian is a modern success and Signature is a classic success.

There have been many other packages and I'll even throw in Inergy for good measure as one of those solid news music packages.

This one, I'm not sure if I like it or not, there needs to be other cuts to it before I can actually give an honest opinion on it.

So far Scripps is trying to (and failing) to make their music a carbon copy of the Weather Channel

  8. Looks like Scripps didn't learn their lessons for how to improve upon the graphics package.

And if they did this wouldn't be rolled out right now so that tells me that they're sticking to their graphics package in it's current forum

KICU's hourly 7pm show says hi.

I consider the Bay Area to be a seperate region from the rest of Northern California, yes KTXL won't be the only ones with 7pm news but as far as the entire Northern California region not named the Bay Area yes they will be the only ones with 7pm news

I'm not sure how they're gonna pull that off considering that Estrella TV's local news windows for affiliates are at 5:00 and 11:00 p.m., not 10:00 p.m. IIRC.

They'll just simply simulcast the newscast with WKCF, it's not like they're launching a newscast specifically for Estella TV.

    1 minute ago, TheRyan said:

Very interesting.  I wonder if they have spanish subtitles (or spanish closed-caption) on the simulcast.

    Probably a few at first.

And I would say that is highly likely.  Especially true for WGHP, imo.

WXII has put in a lot of effort into the newscasts on WCWG so they might have something to say.

Either way this is a big blow to WFMY losing the 7am hour but I'd be curious about how well the Good Morning Show was doing in the 7am hour especially against the likes of WGHP and WCWG (via WXII)

Well if they bring back ole Andy Griffin then they might have ratings jump through the roof. That used to be their lead in

I wouldn't be surprised to see more viewers flip over to WXII and WGHP going forward especially with the loss of both the 7am newscast and Andy Griffith

If it really takes an hour+ to render out something short, then changes do need to be made.

But dumping a good looking gfx pkg for something that is bland and resembles a half-baked PowerPoint presentation is not the answer.   Scripps should've either commissioned RenderOn or somebody to come up with a gfx solution that is impactful and unique--without time-consuming renders.

Other station groups (like Hearst and Nexstar) have very nice packages that work.  Why Scripps couldn't do better is completely beyond me.

    40 minutes ago, channel2 said:

Doesn't Nexstar have multiple packages they standardize around? Plus, the Hearst group isn't as big as Scripps...plus don't they have pretty strong proprietary tech?

Scripps doesn't seem to want to either let stations do their own thing again or create multiple packs to standardize around.

Part of the problem here is that Scripps doesn't want to do any of the things mentioned but yet they want to force stations to use a package that is just... ok. It's not great but it's just ok.

I think Scripps can still do better since remember this is DMA #112 that we're discussing about here, it can still improve if that's truly what Scripps wants to do.

I would suspect many would think moving the Ellen to 3pm would be a better option. But I guess they probably want to clear Daily Blast Live since it probably don't have an earlier feed.

I feel like moving the 7am newscast to 9am would've been the better option, move Daytime Jeopardy to an overnight slot air DBL at 12 (I think they do provide a feed for that slot) and just bump Ellen to 3.

Because the way I view their new schedule now, the Four 2 Five is not going to get very good ratings because their lead-in is not that good.

But since WFMY already produces the 7am hour (which ends after tomorrow), I don't see why they couldn't opt out of programing on one of those sub-channels and carry it as an extension of the morning show.

I would think these discussions have already happened (or are taking place) behind closed doors at WFMY/Tegna.  So I'm thinking this is not likely to happen, but it would make sense to me to keep the hour via a subchannel.

That too would be an option.

Eitther way I don't see an end of The Good Morning Show in the 7am hour, I think Tegna should recognize that this is a piece of history in the Piedmont Triad

I checked Wikipedia and it turns out that WFMY has actually 3 sub-channels: Justice Network, WeatherNation TV, and Quest.    Probably not likely, but I wonder if WFMY could consider running the 7am hour on one of those channels.  At least WFMY wouldn't lose that hour of morning news that has really become important TV history, certainly for that market.

They could certainly do that or once CBS starts rolling out the localized versions of CBSN beyond the O&Os, WFMY restores the 7am hour at that point when they launch their own version of CBSN.

I know CBS hasn't said they'll roll out the localized CBSN's to groups like Tegna but it would make sense for CBS to do that.

If they do, they'll always have KQCW to continue post-7am news. I think CBS may force them to air it in-pattern in the near future, if trends are any indication.

I remember when CBS mandated all affiliates to air both hours of the Early Show, KOTV compromised by starting it at 8am and moving the last hour of their morning show to KQCW. They used to air it 5-9am on KOTV.

And see that's where the bad part comes in for WFMY, they don't have a duopoly partner to be able to continue the 7am newscast and I think this is where WFMY will likely lose some of the viewers in the morning to stations like WGHP and WXII/WCWG

  18. This one here is as @TheRolyPoly described it on his blog is historic a quote from the article

    Quote

So why is this historic you might ask? Because this new program will lead to program changes that’ll see the end of an original. WFMY’s The Good Morning Show started in 1957 and is the longest-running local morning newscast in the United States. One of its hours includes the original 7:00 a.m. hour when the program debuted.

So this is significant in a sense that this will now leave Griffin's KOTV as the only CBS affiliate in the country to run CBS This Morning out of pattern.

I imagine this has to have been part of the new affiliation agreement between CBS and Tegna and apparently like what CBS did to Gray's WTOC, essentially told WFMY to run CTM in pattern, which is a shame.

KWTV in the later days of Newsline 9:

    KFOR with their Vance/EGAD look:

KOCO with the current logo but still under Gannett ownership:

I'm gonna say the template KFOR had in the old building for their set may have lasted for nearly THREE decades AND it survived 4 different ownerships (Palmer, New York Times, Local TV, Tribune) among other things. Oh and it survived through 2 tornadoes (June 1998, May 2003)

Big news out of Atlanta: Tegna's WXIA will start running 3 hours of primetime news weeknights on sister station WATL beginning Monday. New shows at 8p and 9p will join the existing 10p newscast. At 8p, they'll be the only option for news. At, 9p they'll be up against WPCH. And at 10p, they'll face off against powerhouse WAGA.

I'd have to read the article but if I had to take an educated guess it looks as if WATL is shifting MyNetworkTV programming to 11pm-1am
