What's your source for saying this companies aren't commanding that much? That information isn't public knowledge. Of course Sinclair is including the RSNs, that's what the dispute is about. Take those out of the ex m equation,  since they cost distributors more than local stations. Is what Sinclair is asking for the locals in line with what other companies are charging? No one knows. This is all public posturing. Again,  without any context we don't know if "nearly a billion dollars" (whatever that means)  is easy too much to ask,  including the RSNs, or not. That's my point.

I disagree with the Public Posturing. Sinclair as per usual is being greedy, they're even greedier with Dish now than they were with the streammers over the RSNs.

Let's face it, without needed to show proof. Dish is essentially telling Sinclair to go pound sand with their ridiculousness. Dish isn't the only one to have had problems with Sinclair nor is this the first time Dish and Sinclair RSNs had problems (although the RSN side occured just before Sinclair could takeover the RSN assets), many of the streamers have had problems with Sinclair, which that's been well documented in this thread already, therefore I don't need to show you or anyone else "proof" of anything.

How do you know that's "clearly way too much?" It's impossible to make that determination without any context. How long of a time period? How does it compare to similar deals Sinclair has with other distributors? All of these quotes are just public posturing to get the public to pick a side. For all we know,  "nearly a billion in fees" may be what other distributors are paying Sinclair. If they are,  then it's clearly NOT way too much.

Well let's look at their peers, Nexstar isn't commanding that much, Hearst isn't commanding that much, not one single media company that owns the local stations is commanding as much as what Sinclair wants to charge Dish.

I'm sure Sinclair is factoring in the Bally RSNs to the what the fees would cost

Well it sounds like the fight to bring the Bally channels (BACK!) to Dish is going really well at this point🤣🤣🤣

The only thing from that article I disagree with is this

    Quote

Allowing RSNs on a tier could affect future negotiations with other distributors, but some observers believe that Dish is enough of an outlier that Sinclair will be able to keep its other deals intact.

I have serious doubts that Dish is as enough of an "outlier" as some think there are competitors like DirecTV and Comcast among others that are for good reason, keeping an eye on the Dish negotiations, failure to get this deal done will I believe, impact Sinclair's ability to negotiate with other deals

Speaking of Dish, Charlie Ergen has basically come out and said that they're “not interested in taxing our customers” so that should tell us a lot right there.

Maybe CNBC'S audience just isn't used to more hard news, that's maybe why they don't care for him.

The days of just hard, straightforward news is long gone on cable. If you want to find straightforward, balanced news coverage, streamming is the way to go nowadays. Even NewsNation is having to readjust because no one is tuning in to that channel for straightforward coverage.

Name any Sinclair sister station willing to produce a newscast for them.

Truth to be told. Absolutely no one.

In the age of streaming and all of that I believe the only way how stations like KDNL and WTWC ever sees newscasts again on their stations is through regional consolidation of TV stations.

Once I get enough videos uploaded, I'll request a channel.  Also, I have to convert the MPEG4 .ts files to MPEG4 .mp4 files...  (That I can batch process...)

Once they're there, though, I guess there's no protecting them from being downloaded (not that folks didn't find a way to download or capture stuff already...)

There's always an option of not sharing the ones that you value of the most in your collections online if you don't want people to download stuff off of the sites.

Not to mention we're talking about one or two channels that have virtually no real programing outside of live sports.

Yeah JCB and I talked about it briefly in the private chats last night and I honestly don't think that only offering one network and probably not changing the non-live sports content is worth the $23 a month tbh.

This is a latest case of Sinclair getting too greedy yet again

My YouTube channel got suspended just for posting clips of Wheel of Fortune, sometimes with edits such as onscreen text or arrows to point out an editing error or the like. Even my gameplay of the WOF Xbox One video game got blocked by Sony. Granted, I did post multiple full episodes without putting the full show title in the info, but they got caught anyway.

One WOF fan has been screen recording every episode of the 2020-21 season off various Locast feeds and has been posting them on YouTube unlisted and without the show name (or "wheel" or "wof") in the info or tags. They used to be public without incident, but the episode that aired Election Day (which many fans were flocking to because of most markets pre-empting it) got blocked, so they are now all unlisted, but all 185 episodes of Season 38 to date are readily available if you know where to go.

Yeah Christian Dixie is the one who usually uploads all of that day/night's Wheel episodes. Opus used to upload that day/night's Jeopardy episodes but Sony of course got ahold of it and took the channel down.

  9. Interesting details coming out of this CNBC article:

Looks like WarnerDiscovery is the leading choice for the name of the combined company

    The main piece is this

    Quote

The key indicator that future chief executive David Zaslav is already considering a sale down the road -- assuming the merger passes regulatory approval --

    Quote

Malone agreed to turn in those shares for common equity because he wanted to give a combined WarnerDiscovery flexibility to sell itself in the future -- most likely to a deep-pocketed technology company like Amazon or Apple or another media behemoth like Disney, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Honestly I cannot foresee Disney wanting WarnerDiscovery because they already own the Fox Film Studios they bought from Rupert in addition to their existing studios. Owning 3 studios plus having a monopoly on sports rights should give the DOJ more than enough reason to not grant approval for the deal.

I think Amazon or Apple getting WarnerDiscovery would be huge especially for Amazon specifically the Sports perspective. Adding a large collection of Sports properties that Turner has (including the NBA) would be a huge complement to Amazon.

  10. Reuters came out with an article yesterday and its.. an interesting take at all how quickly it came together.

    Quote

Discovery Inc (DISCA.O) CEO David Zaslav emailed his counterpart at AT&T Inc (T.N), John Stankey, on a Sunday afternoon in February to lament how the COVID-19 pandemic had led to them missing the AT&T Pebble Beach golf tournament in California, where the two friends had planned to meet.

So essentially they were going to meet up at the PGA Golf tournament but it couldn't happen because of the COVID regulations in California at the time which led to this:

    Quote

Zaslav's email, which included emojis of a person playing golf and another one with sunglasses

Yeah that explains some of the reasons behind why this deal came together as quickly as it did.

I don't think any of us had a WarnerMedia-Discovery combo in its bingo card (I know I certainly didn't)

  11. 9 minutes ago, mrschimpf said:

Discovery has a lot of sports rights in Eurasia (including B-rights for the Olympics across Europe and Eurosport) that most of North America has never heard about, so the deal is more natural than you'd think, especially for TNT's golf rights for their GolfTV service.

But really, this sounds like more of AT&T still never figuring out why they really needed Warner and Turner outside 'streaming, I guess'; it's DirecTV and U-verse all over again (and they'll have to make new licensing deals once DirecTV is spun off anyways).

Which technically puts Turner back in the Olympics broadcasting game at least internationally.

They would definitely bolster its international sports presence with this deal

  12. Two of the key components of this deal that has not been mentioned yet in this thread are the recent NHL deal that Turner signed. Which does include HBO Max streaming rights, that deal may have to be reworked depending upon what's included in the WarnerMedia deal and what's not or it might not be reworked at all. I think a lot of that depends on which assets Malone/Discovery wants from AT&T.

The 2nd one, this goes back to that "Malone" refrence. John Malone is what I believe to be one of the drivers of these talks and he's much more of a bigger factor in all of this than what's being said. His Liberty Media company owns the Braves (who used to play its games on Turner).

There's just so many things that I could say about this deal but I'll reserve it for the Speculation boards.

I doubt this will go anywhere...

Tell that to Rosenworcel. Even Carr today called on the FCC to dismiss this complaint with prejudice "by the end of the day today"

Sadly Rosenworcel and the D's will see this and use this to RKO Sinclair out.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually feel bad for many of Sinclair stations that had absolutely nothing to do with this and yet they will ultimately be punished because of what WBFF "did" and I even feel bad for WBFF itself because they were doing its job of asking questions and holding people accountable and yet Mosby "felt rubbed the wrong way" and is asking the FCC to possibly take away its license to broadcast from WBFF.

I definitely agree this shouldn't go anywhere but unfortunately this will likely be the topic for awhile.

Not the case with Sony. Everything from the earliest seasons of Trebek's Jeopardy to Chuck Woolery's slightly forgotten Wheel of Fortune to even the polarizing Patrick Wayne Tic Tac Dough version. It seems like most people go to either Dailymotion or the Internet Archive to put Sony content.

Yep, even I have put Sony content on the Internet Archive as well.

I'm surprised with the way ContentID works that Sony hasn't picked up on it. You can't even pitch/speed up or mirror the videos without getting blocked.

It was actually David Downs himself that mentioned how Sony is inconsistent.

And you also can't cam record off of your device either (which is strange considering for certain shows that's the only way of doing it without getting the video blocked)

Those 1982 episodes are the ones on Pluto.

Didn't know that Fremantle has blocked slightly newer TPIR and LMAD.

Yeah any newer material stuff will absolutely without question be blocked. I know my channel viewers prefer more modern stuff but I can't upload modern stuff not because I don't like it or anything like that it's just that I can't take that risk like that.
