I'll summarize my thoughts from the Discord:

I don't think this is an attempt at a new OTA weather channel or anything close to WeatherPlus. I think this is a vehicle to enable the hubbing of weather. The press release says "Fox Weather will feature local, regional and national updates... [Drawing] on more than 75 meteorologists across 17 stations and Fox News Channel’s news gathering teams." and makes no mention of affiliate stations. This is a project that involves only the O&O group.

Rebrand all the local weather departments under the "Fox Weather" banner (Which would be similar to WeatherPlus) and now you have a unified brand that anyone can appear in front of. Do you really need weekend meteorologists at both WITI and WFLD? Or can you just "regionalize" these markets and do both out of one station from time to time? Oh no! A Tornado warning has been issued on a Sunday morning, and nobody's at the station! Not to worry, the Mothership in NYC has somebody on duty, and they were going to cover the Tornado warning anyways, so they might as well just simulcast Fox Weather on the local FOX O&O.

I would not be the least bit surprised if midway through next year, they announce they're "streamlining" the O&O's and are taking advantage of "operational efficiencies" presented with a network of meteorologists and suddenly some stations lose their weekend/fill in mets. I've said for some time now that Weather and Sports were ripe for hubbing, and I think this might be the start of that.

I do think you're onto something here. I think this could be one of those trends of the 2020s especially in this so called media consolidation frenzy. I think we'll see many more groups fall in line with Fox and streamline the weather and sports departments. I don't think Fox is going to be the only ones doing it, I think we'll start seeing other groups whether it'd be networks or local affiliate groups jump into the fray and do the same thing.

I'd say go for it too. Not only would moving to Times Square give CTM a breath of fresh air in several ways like studio-wise and design-wise (including a bigger window for passersby to look into), it would also give the Broadcast Center space for another TV show (or at least CBS [News]) to do production. A straight-up win-win for everyone.

Question, how big is the space at Studio 57?

That could determine what the eventual next steps could look like for CBS assuming that CTM moves to Times Square.

I have to wonder though how ABC's GMA feels about having a competitor in the same area?

More bad news for Hulu subcribers, your Sinclair-owned CBS affiliates could be going away.

At least with the OTT deals, they tend to be divided by affiliation....which was likely the linchpin of getting these stations on these services to begin with.

What is up with Sinclair's tactics? Whatever leverage they're trying to use to get back on streammers certainly ain't working. First they lost the Tennis Channel on YTTV and now they're about to lose certain locals on Hulu Live as well.

And I should point this out too, the fact that even Sinclair's local stations are starting to be affected now tells me that not everybody wants to integrate RSNs (or even cable channels in general) with local stations.

In the scheme of things, DTC sports is long overdue.  So much of the price of cable/satellite TV has been driven up by the cost of live sports, as well as the added "RSN Fees" that have been tacked on to virutally every cable/satellite bundle in existence.  Let the fans pay for it, and if they can't, then it's time for the sports leagues to come back down to reality.

While I do agree with those points however, here's the problem.

Ripley said something to the effect of "still wanting DTC tied to cable/satellite". What Ripley doesn't realize is that it actually defeats the purpose of truly going DTC, a real DTC service in general wouldn't be tied in with the cable/satelitte bundle (e.g. Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock) heck even ESPN+ isn't tied into that pay TV bubble.

I think that to me as it's been the case all along since Sinclair bought the RSNs it's been.. missteps after missteps after missteps and it's costing them dearly. It's not Sinclair's past rhetorics on the news side that's costing them, it's the RSNs and their constant missteps is what's hurting them right now.

The Brewers current FSN deal apparently just ran out, but they're in a rock and a hard place (Sinclair also owns the WVTV CW/MyNet feeds, and Weigel's WMLW is on a low-power stick). Their literal only other move would be to the local Spectrum News 1, so I would expect the deal to be renewed by default. But since the team's major sponsor is an area Native American casino and there's no sports betting in the state, they will push back hard against branding with some out-of-state entity Wisconsinites still associate more with pinball and fitness centers in the past than gambling.

Did the deal with the Bucks also ran out to or no?

Honestly Sinclair not able to get the Brewers on board (while isn't necessarily the end of the world for Sinclair) is not a good start for them if they want to get all of the teams they have rights to on board.

Although to be fair I'm sure Sinclair losing out on all of the streaming services (and others) with no sign of those services bringing them back anytime soon probably left the Brew Crew a bit of a sour taste in their mouth.

This just a bad idea all around. I can only imagine what the sport teams who had no say in this decision are thinking (especially the Cubs since they jumped in late).

At what point do you have to start wondering when the leagues and the teams who's games air on Sinclair-owned RSNs walk away from Sinclair?

It feels as if Sinclair has botched this deal from the word go. It took them over a year to put together a plan to rebrand the FSNs, pretty much pissed off all of the streammers (somewhat unreleated, they lost the Tennis Channel on YTTV so there goes what little leverage Sinclair had left to get the RSNs back on YTTV)

Honestly this feels like the Astros/Rockets situation on a much bigger level.

  7. The presentation on this partnership was released today. Saw this on the 506 forums and honestly it is to be expected with regards to the emphasis on betting, etc. Graphics and ticker looks interesting too. It'll be interesting to see what the final product looks like.

    https://sbgi.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Ballys-Sinclair-Inv-Deck_FINAL.pdf

Meanwhile Sinclair also announced that the DTC plans will complement the existing pay-tv services and go more of a hybrid approach https://thestreamable.com/news/sinclair-ceo-says-upcoming-direct-to-consumer-offering-will-complement-to-pay-tv-business

Another "blow" to Sinclair.  YouTubeTV is dropping the Tennis Channel.  This one hurts really bad, and I"m sure a lot of viewers will be sad over this one. 🤣

Now with the sarcasm aside, I do wonder what the future holds for Sinclair's affiliates on YouTubeTV.  They are one of the few groups that allows a majority of their CW & MyNetworkTV stations to be carried, with very few exceptions.  It's only a matter of time before they get into a spat like Nexstar has with their ABC affiliates and Hulu Live.

That's not going to bode well for Sinclair at the negotiating table when they try to get the soon-to-be former Fox branded RSNs on YTTV.

That was when they were desperate to run away from Soo Kim in what was seen as a hostile takeover.

And that he's quietly moved on with the purchase of KBSI/WDKA from Sinclair (and with more deals with them possibly down the line as part of Sinclair's efforts to pay down its debt from the RSN acquisition) so I'm not sure that Kim is even going to make another push to take over Tegna and just focuses on being one of the major shareholders in the company

What's this I hear about TBN wanting to buy Tegna and replace the existing newscasts on those stations with hard-right religious shows? Did you hear about that?

    https://www.nexttv.com/blog/beware-of-religious-bias-in-media-consolidation

This was back in April when there were rumors about that.

I'm not sure what's happened to them since then but I haven't heard anything new in terms of who's offering Tegna and who isn't unless I've missed something since then.

This is a bad move by them and possibly a safety risk. Will they do this during severe weather events?

This is especially true in Severe Weather markets now those who archive severe weather coverage to YouTube would have no way of being able to freely access stations such as WIAT, KFOR, the KSN stations, or WDAF if they were to go behind the paywall.

I have no idea what the heck Nexstar is thinking but.. this is just not a very smart move.

P.S. all of the stations I just mentioned are in markets that are very Severe Weather savy.

  12. Bloomberg has more details on that

    Quote

The Bally brand would appear on local-news sports updates, as well as national broadcasts of sporting events -- from golf to pro football -- on the local stations

The deal isn’t exclusive with Bally’s -- Sinclair can still sell ads and create partnerships with other betting operators. The branding relationship will be in place for 10 years and can be extended for five more.

All told Bally's (which is ironically enough Soo Kim has control of the company) is paying $85 million for the naming rights

Let’s focus on another station now because that’s ridiculous. So many delays they should just wait til 2021

You would think so but as Kent indicated to us on Discord last night, they're going to continue moving forward and rolling out this pkg in time for the election. I firmly believe that they've gone so far in on this project that there's no way they're going to delay it until next year.

They want to get it right and not rushed like what we saw with WFLA's implementation of this pkg.

It seems they are planning on launching their own OTT platform, either through Stirr or some other means.

And they want to restructure the 8 BILLION in debt they have tied to this deal.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/creditors-brace-for-possible-debt-restructuring-at-sinclair-sports-unit-11603235294

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what Sinclair is doing here. They haven't even indicated anything yet what they're going to do with the RSNs and the fact they have to restructure the debt ($8 billion of them to be exact)

I'm going to be honest and frank I keep saying that both Sinclair and Meredith are in really bad shape and what's going on with both companies is further proving my point that I keep making time after time after time.

Granted I don't know what Sinclair's plans are they won't tell us anything but so far people like Rich Greenfield of LightShed have been proven correct and even Rupert Murdoch (the seller of the FSNs) has been proven correct as well.

If there are two companies you do not want to buy assets from that are Disney and Fox if you do what Sinclair has done by buying the RSNs from BOTH Disney and Fox you'll lose money and lose money just as fast as the debt on that said asset is rising.

It looks like CBS is quickly rolling out their new look across their Network Promos, Show Promos, and Social Media. The core sports package package is unchanged, but I noticed that their fullscreen promos for upcoming games, tonight's shows, etc were the "new look."

I also caught a liner in the second CBS game (I can't for the life of me remember which game we carried) that mentioned big changes coming in November, but I was only half listening so I'm not exactly sure of the full context. Perhaps an updated look for The Masters? I can't imagine they'd change their election night look this late in the game.

I would assume you got NYG-DAL earlier today.
