  1. The comment, not sure it was a quote was not directed at MSNBC but all the many cable networks with low viewership that fill up our cable lineups. I'm not sure why someone applied that directly to MSNBC, which is part of NBC News and plays a key role in news gathering, reporting and more. If, and probably its a big if, since this is just floated as an idea for analysis, it was to happen, MSNBC, CNBC, and USA, because of their tie in with the network and Peacock (news, business news, sports) may not be included. Plus as you note MSNBC makes a lot of money, I expect CNBC does and USA might. What makes NBCU unique vs. WBD and Paramount, is they have not shied away from just shutting down cable networks.
  2. The first two are applicable to the fox channel as well. As trump picks for his cabinet become more and more bizarre, enthusiastic viewers will return. Net net, remember, the channels don't get the majority of tv eyes unless in times of a major disaster.
  3. It's all temporary as they move on from the election. I know many who just didn't want to watch any news, MSNBC, CNN, broadcast networks until they all moved past the election. I wouldn't make wide conclusions only 8 days past the election.
  4. There is. MSNBC has its audience, outperforms CNN and at times (not all the time) in the evening rivals Fox channel. Back to topic, MSNBC and CNBC (each with distinctly different target audiences) are integrated into NBC News (management, resources, reporters, etc) that spinning them off would probably be problematic. USA is the same now with NBC Sports. As for the rest, probably no longer as important to the network and company as they were 10 years ago. The problem becomes, if any of the owners of multiple (and ever more generic) cable stations are up for sale, would there even be a buyer today?
  5. Except when not airing any of the Real Housewives franchises, or Andy Cohen's show (which is part of that same universe), it airs the same movies you find on other NBCU outlets including E, USA and SyFy. And that is the problem with so many cable outlets by Paramount, ABC and NBCU - the same shows and movies are broadcast on all of them.
  6. I believe the comment was about the low viewership cable channels in general, not MSNBC, CNBC, or USA specifically. Think all those Paramount channels, ABC (ex Fox) and NBCU low viewership channels.
  7. Some cover multiple states too. DMA #1 is New York, covers not just the 5 boroughs of NYC but Long Island, more than half of New Jersey, SW Connecticut and a county in Pennsylvania (Pike).
  8. As I read in the Variety article, it would be very complicated. MSNBC and CNBC are part of NBC News and helps pay for news gathering (they are very profitable). USA is a vehicle for NBC Sports now that they shut down their own sports channel. Plus they play a big role with Peacock. Universo is tied in with Telemundo, and hosts sports including Spanish simulcasts of SNF and probably SNNBA. Could E!, Bravo, Oxygen and Universal Kids command enough interest in a spinoff? They are right to look at it as an option, but anyone thinking this is a done deal is way too premature.
  9. This was a clickbait article by the Murdoch owned paper. Nothing newsy about it. So yes, the co-anchor needs to have chemistry with the existing anchor. That's not new.
  10. I’m not sure why some expected a total refresh. Basically Bally’s ended their naming deal and FanDuel stepped in. When (if) Diamond/Sinclair emerges from bankruptcy, FanDuel may invest but won’t be the controlling owner based on what has been disclosed.
  11. Not like CBS has had to pay over a billion in settlements for airing lies. Can we see all of trump's outtakes from various interviews? Should be good for a laugh and eye roll.
  12. Except the condition of license, per the NJ Congressional delegation, was not removed, despite the move to UHF for digital TV. Sadly, NJ still is limited in tv news coverage with Fox in violation of that condition. That is for lawyers to argue, not us. When their license is up again, watch for some noise from NJ's Congressional delegation and other groups. Sadly, I see Ch. 9 as a waste of airspace today. Full of Family Feud reruns and judge shows, plus NBCU content that MyTV broadcasts and can be found elsewhere. Lots of other choices that are more interesting.
  13. A little history. For many years, WOR's owner, RKO General, had broadcast license renewal issues with the FCC due to many concerns with the parent company and its practices.. Meanwhile, NJ senators had a rule passed in Congress that any commercial station that would relocate to a state without a VHF TV station would get immediate renewal from the FCC. NJ's only VHF station had switched to public tv status much earlier (now WNET). The intent was to have a broadcast station much more NJ focus than the NY/PHL stations that cover a few, not exclusively NJ stories. RKO General saw this as a way out of their mess for WOR. The FCC first agreed, and put in place the requirement that WOR would need to have a news product and focus more on NJ than NY. The station moved, set up a news department and some local programming (e.g. 9 Broadcast Plaza) but in the end it did not prevent the FCC from yanking the licenses. Once sold, it became WWOR and each subsequent owner was required by the FCC to maintain the NJ focus as part of their license. Then came Fox, who bought WWOR, moved most of its operations into WNYW Fox 5, then watered down the unique newscast, then cancelled it, first replacing it with Chasing NJ at a late night hour, then dropping all news. Subsequently, all operations were moved to NYC. Only recently has any news reappeared on WWOR, a tape repeat of the 6 pm news on Fox5, not a unique fresh newscast. The news broadcasts due to sports on Fox5 that have recently showed up on WWOR are Fox5 news (branding and content). For those reasons, critics are correct in that Fox is not meeting the conditions of WWOR's license.
  14. Glad Diamond Sports doesn't fully own or operate in NYC. Ouch. By breaking the contracts, I would assume there will be some legal action too. Does the entire group have much time left?
  15. I think folks forget CBS had tried to lure Williams to head up the evening news in the past, and, was rebuffed. Not sure anything has changed (other than more chaos at CBS with budget cuts, headcount reductions, and the pending purchase). Plus, does Williams even want to go back to the daily grind now that he hasn't been doing that for 2 years? I also would assume that he would want much more than his ending salary at MSNBC, and that could be an issue for CBS today, considering the current plan is a lower cost option.
  16. Remember, he was never an option for all the attempts CNN made for a morning show. NBC first step is what do they want at 7 and 10. Stability vs. shake up. That will drive decision making. Because of the whole Matt Lauer mess, stability was key and why they expanded Hoda's role. I doubt one person will be moved to both hours. NBC also has a strong bench, and that helps.
  17. Selling a property and leasing it back is a common practice in business. It offers tax benefits. It does not mean they are selling the actual broadcast station. Think of it as they will gain money from selling the building, have a tax benefit and then pay rent to a third party. Reading the statement that is what it sounds like.
  18. Didn't I read that CBS owned stations are moving to single anchors. That probably means DuBois won't be replaced at 5 and 6, and he may anchor alone at 11.
  19. I would expect he only keeps the 11 pm. Half an hour to prepare for CBSEN is too short.
  20. Evidently he was the only one taking a fresh show for Fridays.
  21. It will be simulcast on all networks. Just like last time.
  22. Is Studio A the same as you refer to Studio 1 or is it one of the studios for GMA, Live, or WNT?
  23. Sorry, but it seems reflective of the chaos of Paramount Global.
  24. or move to WLNY? And when is the third hour of CBS Mornings going to be slotted? Or will it replace the Talk?
